This Week...
It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas out there - and not just because of the snow. In the Empire office we've got our Advent calendars up and opened and the Christmas tree... well, absent since the budget won't stretch, but apparently we're allowed to look at Mojo's tree between the hours of 4pm and 4.30pm. Far more important than all that, however, is the fact that we're asking you to vote for your favourite cinema Christmas moments: from entire films (Elf, It's A Wonderful Life, Die Hard) to single scenes (Meet Me In St Louis, Batman Returns). Give us your favourites so we can compile a definitive "nice" list. And to keep you busy if you're snowed in, we have a guide to Sofia Coppola's career to date and a quiz on boats in movies to keep your brain warmed up.

Real Steel Teaser Trailer Online
Based on Richard Matheson's short story (which itself has previously been adapted for a Twilight Zone episode), Real Steel finds Jackman as Charlie Kenton, a former boxer whose life has gone from winning fights to training robots to fight instead. We're in a near-future world where humanity's lust for violent pugilism has evolved beyond what regular fighters can endure, and now hulking machines clash in the ring. Charlie's down on his luck, hustling matches in underground fighting leagues and looking for his mechanical meal ticket.

    Name Your Favourite Superhero Game
What's your favourite video game based on an iconic superhero? Arkham Asylum? Spider-Man 2? Maybe you can't resist kicking the adamantium out of each other, courtesy of X-Men: Mutant Academy or Marvel vs. Capcom. Heck, maybe you even braved the creaking monstrosities that were the two recent Iron Man games. Whatever your excuse for getting into your virtual underwear-over-tights combo, let us know.

    Sofia Coppola: Film By Film
Growing up passing the cornflakes to Eleanor and Francis Ford Coppola and sharing family gatherings with the likes of film composer great Carmine Coppola and cousins Jason Schwartzman and Nicolas Cage, it's hardly surprising that some of those cinematic chromosomes have rubbed off on Sofia Coppola. Now 39, she's perhaps the ultimate Hollywood insider-turned-observer, eshewing the LA limelight to make films with an emotional distance and quiet power that mark her out as a unique voice in filmmaking. Her latest, Somewhere, is another hymn to dislocation and change, set in the grand surrounds of Sunset Bouvelard's Chateau Marmont. To mark its release we've looked back at her impressive and consistent filmography to find out what makes her tick.

    Video: Introducing Gareth Edwards
Made using software you can pick up at your local Dixons, Monsters is a sci-fi spectacular that, in its own way, could prove as game-changing as Avatar. It's a love story wrapped in a road movie with a helping of extra-terrestrial paranoia, and it's quite brilliant. In the first of Empire Online's 'Introduction to' series, we chatted to director Gareth Edwards about his cinema influences and first loves - the ingredients that went into making Monsters. His desert island movie may surprise you. Just saying.

Vote For Your Favourite Christmas Movie!
Mistletoe and wine all around! It's that time of year again, and we want you to tell us your favourite Christmas movies. Yes, that includes films - like Die Hard, Batman Returns or Meet Me In St Louis - where the film includes Christmas but doesn't focus on it. Yes, you're allowed to mention uncool films like Mickey's Christmas Carol if that's the way you feel. No, a vote that goes against the majority opinion WON'T land you on the naughty list. So get voting, and - as the Americans say - enjoy this holiday season...

    Peter Weir Webchat Transcript
Peter Weir is a director who relishes a challenge. He's sailed the Seven Seas in Master And Commander, braved the sweltering jungles of The Mosquito Coast, delved into the arcane world of the Amish for Witness and prophecied the arrival of reality TV on The Truman Show. His latest opus, The Way Back, spans most of Asia, with Jim Sturgess, Ed Harris, and a small band of hardy Gulag escapees hot footing it across Siberian in the general direction of freedom. As a final mission before retiring to a beach in Sydney for a well-earned glass of wine, he ran the gauntlet of Empire's wintry HQ to answer your questions on everything from Truman Burbank to Australia's chances in the Ashes. Will there be a sequel to Master And Commander, and is there a long-unmade passion project lurking in the Weir sock drawer? Read on to find out.

    The Ultimate Boats Picture Quiz
We heard a rumour that The Chronicles Of Narnia: Voyage Of The Dawn Treader might have something to do with a boat. A boat called 'The Dawn Treader', as it happens. This lead us down the conversational alleyway of "What's your favourite movie boat?" (it was a slow news day, admittedly) and suddenly we had a picture quiz on our hands. We've gone for boat boats, rather than seaplanes or submarines, so as soon as you recognise the vessel in question, put the name of the film it's from in the box beneath and... find out of you're right or not. Bon voyage!

    Five Watery Debacles
The sea is a seriously forboding place, full of toothy fish, tentacled creatures and wizened old men with beards. It's no coincidence that Davey Jones didn't put leave his locker in, say, a village pond. It can be stormier than Gordon Ramsay's family Christmas and more unpredictable than a hyena's breakfast. It's certainly no place to take your cast and crew to shoot a movie, where schedules rule and variables are the sworn enemy. Still, (fool)hardy folk that they are, filmmakers have done exactly that. Michael Apted, director of Voyage Of The Dawn Treader, decided against joining sea veterans like Steven Spielberg and Peter Weir on the open water roll of horror. "I went to speak to every director who's ever shot on water," Apted told Empire. "They all said the same thing: 'Don't!'" Apted instead opted for the smoke-and-mirrors approach of a hydraulically-powered vessel moored to terra firma, but his words got us thinking about those other weathered, seafaring directors. What went wrong or, in the case of Waterworld, right, on the shoots. Hold tight for some seafaring tales that will literally bend your bones...

    Inception

Like The Matrix mated with Synecdoche, New York — or a Charlie Kaufman 007. To paraphrase Casino Royale's Vesper Lynd, it's a meaningful pursuit in a summer of disposable entertainments. With physics-defying, thunderous action, heart-wringing emotion and an astonishing performance from DiCaprio, Nolan delivers another true original: welcome to an undiscovered country.
