 | This Week... This week sees the start of the Cannes Film Festival, and - far more importantly - the start of the Cannes Videblogisodes from our intrepid team of Chris, Sam and Damo. They'll be bringing us all the news from the Festival in their own special ways. Damon Wise will be writing considered, intelligent blogs about the fabulous array of world cinema that's being presented at the Festival, while Chris and Sam will be getting beaten up by the great and good, talking to disembodied heads, dressing up as superheroes and occasionally fitting in the odd interview, if past years are anything to go by. Here in the office, we've played host to Attack The Block director Joe Cornish for a webchat, sat down to natter with President Bartlet and had a quick chat with David Attenborough. Yup, it's all go here. Helen O'Hara Deputy Online Editor, Empire | | |

 | | | | | The A To Z Of Cannes Every May the cream of world filmmaking decamps to the Mediterranean for 11 days of style, sunshine and cinema. But what really goes on down on the Croisette and who exactly are all those strange, Dictaphone-bearing men in cords? Cannes is one of the more exclusive festivals on the circuit and unless you've got press accreditation or a page on IMDb the chances of getting in are slim to none, although there's plenty on the periphery for the casual spectator. To speed Cannes goers on their way, we've compiled Empire's guide to the festival, the town and the superstars you might find there. | | |
| | | Video Interviews: The Cast And Crew Of Attack The Block Joe Cornish (of Adam And Joe fame) has gone and made himself a movie. Bringing together a cast that includes old pal Nick Frost, new pals Jodie Whittaker and Luke Treadaway, and five ever-so-talented newcomers in the form of John Boyega (Moses), Franz Drameh (Dennis), Alex Esmail (Pest), Leeon Jones (Jerome) and Simon Howard (Biggz), it's been billed as 'inner city vs. outer space' as a gang of South London hoodies are the last line of defence for a tower block that's been attacked by hairy, vicious, bloodthirsty aliens. Sitting down with them all, we got to chatting about a sequel, dance troupes, and what exactly we're supposed to call those "big alien gorilla wolf motherfuckers" in polite company... |
| | | Joe Cornish And The 13 Films That Inspired Attack The Block Speaking to Joe Cornish recently, we couldn't help but ask him about the films that influenced Attack The Block. Because though he's said that the original flash of inspiration came from getting mugged in south London one dark evening, we were interested in the movies that helped him frame his shots, balance the dialogue, and actually bring Moses and Biggz and co. to life. Like the gentleman he is, he responded with 13 examples of movies that inspired him, and here they all are, kicking off on the next slide with Rumble Fish and ending with, well, you'll have to wait and see. |
| | | Martin Sheen And Emilio Estevez On The Way It's not every day that you get the living legend that is Josiah Bartlet and the only-slightly-less-legendary Billy the Kid to sit down together. Well, actually it probably is around Casa Sheen, since Martin Sheen and Emilio Estevez are father-and-son and recently filmmaking collaborators too. The pair came into town recently to discuss their new film The Way, in which a bereaved father (Sheen) walks the Camino de Santiago through the Pyrenees in a sort of tribute to his recently deceased son (Estevez, who also directs). We went along to find out what prompted them to make a film about a pilgrimage and how they managed to shoot inside a cathedral... |
| | | 14 Of Cinema's Most Adorable Animals Nowadays, studios lure kids into the cinema with giant robots (Transformers 3), buccaneers (Pirates) comic book heroes (Thor, Captain America) and, of course, CGI animals with Hollywood voices (Hop, Rio, Rango). But back in the day, movie-makers didn't have access to CGI trickery. So what did they do? They wowed audiences with cartoons and live-action animal capers. So in honour of the seemingly passé work of animal actors, here are 14 of our favourite cute critters, from dogs to penguins, sea lions to orang-utans, all of them stupidly sweet and aggressively adorable. Any we've missed that you still love? Let us know in the usual place… |
