 | This Week... It was Ali's birthday this week, so we baked him a cake and sent him to Thorpe Park. Well, it's not every day that a young man turns 13! (Wait, what? He's 24? I don't believe it!). "How does that relate to film?" we hear you cry. Well, Senna's a bit of a rollercoaster ride (out this week) and there are teenagers in Prom, sooooo… OK, so we can't back that up. In other news, we're looking forward to a couple of the Bridesmaids gang coming in on Tuesday June 7 for a webchat, and you might want to check out our teen movies quiz with the cast of the aforementioned Prom. Turns out that some of them don't know their 10 Things I Hate About You from their Mean Girls. They'll never graduate high school with that sort of lax attitude. | | | | | The Smallville Finale: The End's Not Near, It's Here So here we are, like Frodo and Sam, at the end of all things. Well, maybe not the end of all things per se, but at the climax of a journey every bit as arduous and testing - albeit in very different ways given that Smallville jumped the shark (in more than a single bound) many moons ago. Despite the steady, logic-abandoning decline though (which I've already discussed here), I was surprisingly optimistic about the farewell episodes. As Remy Zero blasted out "somebody saaaaaaave meeeee" for the last time after ten years and just as many seasons, I felt safe that the creative bods behind the show would deliver a satisfying and fitting full-stop to the modern re-telling of Clark Kent's pre-cape days. | | | |

 | | | | | Asif Kapadia Talks Senna "True fiction" is how Asif Kapadia describes Senna, a look back at the life and times of Brazilian motor racing genius Ayrton Senna. Whatever you call it - and somehow 'documentary' doesn't cut it - it's a terrific piece of work that will be cherished not just by Formula 1 fans, but even by those who'd normally rather bake their eyeballs than watch cars whizzing round a track. The British director explained how Antonio Banderas, Oliver Stone and Michael Mann all tried and failed to bring Senna to the big screen, and talked through some of the scenes that didn't make the final cut. Ladies and gentlemen, start your e-ngines... | | |
| | | Prom: We Quiz The Cast On Teen Movies Prom is the latest none-more-teen-movie effort from Disney, looking at a wide range of teens as their prom approaches and they try to deal with the various issues in their lives. It's bouncy and bubbly - just like the young and largely untried cast, who we met up with recently in LA. But we didn't want to just interview them, oh no! Instead, we decided to test them on their teen movie knowledge - and here are the results... |
| | | X-Men: First Class Interviews X-Men: First Class has everyone very excited at the moment, as the Kick-Ass (in every sense) team of Matthew Vaughn and Jane Goldman bring their touch to the legendary mutants, with a 1960s-set romp through their history. We talked to Goldman and stars Nicholas Hoult and Kevin Bacon earlier this week to get the lowdown on what's in store... |
| | | Six Sports Biopics We'd Love To See It's been a year of epic sports stories. Barcelona have officially become The Greatest Football Team Ever, Shane Warne and Elizabeth Hurley have recreated Austin Powers: International Man Of Mystery before our very (alarmed) eyes, while on screen Christian Bale has picked up an Oscar for his portrayal of ex-boxer Dicky Eklund and Mickey Rourke is setting to work learning the fine art of the rolling maul to play Welsh rugby international Gareth Thomas. With great sports docs like TT3D, Fire In Babylon and Senna also appearing on our screens, we can now do all our exercise vicariously. But there are other lesser-known sports stars out there with stories every bit as amazing. We've uncovered a few that we'd love to see on the big screen. |
| | | Vote For Your Favourite Harry Potter Characters With the finale instalment of the Harry Potter series out this summer, we thought that this would be the perfect time to look back over the seven books and eight films and establish which Potter character is your favourite. Is it The Boy Who Lived himself? Do sidekicks Ron and Hermione have what it takes? Is it all about one of the Professors, or the Marauders, or the smaller characters like Dobby or Buckbeak? Vote for your favourite three characters below to have your say and establish who's top wizard... |
| | | Seven X-Men Yet To Appear On Screen The X-Men changes line-ups like most teams change their away kits. In the decades since the mutants first appeared, scores of characters have joined them – among them former enemies including Magneto, Mystique, Rogue and Juggernaut. But with the fifth X-movie hitting cinemas this week and a whole host more mutants lining up, we thought we'd take a moment to focus on the mutants who have not yet appeared in the movies at all, and assess whether some of these fan-favourites (and not-so-favourites) would work onscreen... |
| | | The Ultimate Younger Versions Picture Quiz Thanks to flashbacks to childhood days, many actors require younger versions of themselves to play their characters back when they were nippers. Some of them are mere two second cut-tos, others, genuine scene stealers. Any road, as X-Men: First Class sees a whole host of older actors recast in their younger forms for a whole movie fillum, we thought we'd celebrate the process with this handy picture quiz. And remember: it's the name of the movie we want, not the character or the actor, people. Just thought we'd make that clear - this one would be extra bastard hard, otherwise... |
| | | Empire Meets Michael Holding Until the Nazgûl give us that elusive roundtable, Michael 'Whispering Death' Holding is easily the scariest sounding man Empire has ever interviewed. Of course, as anyone who's listened to his cricket commentary will know, that moniker belies a man who's as easygoing off the pitch as he was venomous on it. At his peak of his 12-year West Indies Test career he was simply awesome. The stats speak for themselves. 249 wickets. An average of 23.68. Top speed 97 mph. Actually, forget the Nazgûl, Whispering Death was more frightening. The languidly hostile bowler was a fierce cog in arguably the greatest cricket team to ever play the game: the West Indies side of the 1970s and '80s. They're the subject of Fire In Babylon, an enthralling documentary that's part origin story for Holding, Viv Richards, Clive Lloyd, Joel Garner and co, part exploration of the cultural roots of Caribbean independence. |

 | | | | | X-Men: First Class All you'd expect from an X-Men film (or spin-off, or prequel), but not all you'd hope for.
