 | This Week... Our recent spate of awesome webchats continued this week with the arrival of Nicolas Winding Refn, director of the awesome Drive and certified so-hot-right-now European director. You can read his webchat transcript to learn more about his favourite sandwich (one day we'll have a webchat where that question isn't asked, and the world will end), and read our Ryan Gosling feature to learn more about the man of the moment, since he's got two hot films coming out this week. Elsewhere, we're all heading off tomorrow to celebrate the wedding of our very own Chris Hewitt to Fola Salako, also formerly of this parish. We hope you'll join us both in wishing them well, and in hoping I don't drop the cake I'm contributing on the way to the venue. Helen O'Hara Deputy Editor, Empire | | |

 | | | | | Wedding Fever: What's The Perfect Movie Reading? It's wedding season here in the Empire office, since two members of staff are planning their nuptials and others of us are attending various friends' conjugal celebrations. And while discussing these, we got to talking about the readings taking place at these events. Passages from The Alchemist and Captain Correlli's Mandolin seem to be popular these days at civil ceremonies, but they're both a bit, well, heavy. We much prefer the wedding where one Empire-ite read the lyrics to a Britney Spears song (Toxic, I like to think). And we were thinking that it'd be much more fun if one could do readings - possibly two-person dialogues - from great movies instead. | | | |

 | | | | | Ryan Gosling: A Viewer's Guide Ryan Gosling is, to borrow from Zoolander, so hot right now. How hot? Well, even in the company of fellow movie meteors like Michael Fassbender and Tom Hardy, the one-two of Drive and Crazy, Stupid, Love, and the release of political thriller The Ides Of March, will make him the brightest star in the firmament for the next few months – and probably a whole lot longer. The two films couldn't be more different, flaunting a dazzling range to go with those chiselled features and musical talent. Sure the accent may have floated about down the years, but the charisma and talent have been evident from those long-forgotten Disney days. To mark his return to our screens, we've assembled some of the Canadian's finest moments. | | |
| | | Warrior: Joel Edgerton & Tom Hardy Interview Warrior is a film for men. Manly men, with abs the size of buildings and pectoral muscles that could sink a fleet of ships. It stars Joel Edgerton and Tom Hardy, giving two of the best performances of the year, as conflicted brothers who come face-to-face during an MMA tournament. They are men. Manly men, with abs so large they show up on maps and pectoral muscles that could beat up your pectoral muscles. So, naturally, we sent along 85lb weakling, Chris Hewitt, to interview them. Watch to see if he managed to survive! (Spoiler: he did.) |
| | | An Idiot Abroad Returns In their hit series An Idiot Abroad, Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant sent reluctant foil Karl Pilkington around the globe on a series of exotic adventures. With Series 2 about to start on Sky1, we sat down with the three comedy titans for an hour in their London office. Most of that was devoted to our biggest and possibly funniest Pint Of Milk ever — see our next issue, on sale next week — but in the meantime here are their thoughts on the bigger-budget return of An Idiot Abroad, which will see Karl come face to face with Eskimos, Russians and a TV-loving hippopotamus... |
| | | Alan Tudyk On Alan Tudyk Everybody loves Alan Tudyk, even if they don't quite know who he is. The star of this week's Tucker & Dale Vs. Evil has appeared in everything from Serenity to 28 Days, from I, Robot (he was the robot) to Transformers 3 (he was the "humorous" supporting character who actually was). He's hard at work on the other side of the Atlantic right now, but we got hold of him on the phone to ask about his new redneck horror comedy and catch up on some career highlights to date... |
| | | Exclusive: Guillermo del Toro Interview With the delays that ended his involvement in The Hobbit and the consignment of At The Mountain Of Madness into the purgatory of turn-around, you'd forgive Guillermo del Toro for feeling a little exasperated with life. In fact, you'd probably turn a blind eye if he choose to launch a frustrated boot in the direction of the nearest hell-beast. Not a bit of it. When Empire caught up with the Mexican maestro he was every bit his usual, ebullient self, sharing the latest on his current project, monster mash Pacific Rim, and chatting passionately about his work on Don't Be Afraid Of The Dark, Julia's Eyes and a freshly spruced director's cut of Mimic. Oh, and he's also written another novel. Question is, when does he sleep? Turns out he doesn't... |
| | | R.E.M. In The Movies So, farewell then, R.E.M.. Athens' finest – the other Athens, the one in Georgia – called it quits yesterday after 30 years and 15 albums. Their forays into the world of film weren't as pronounced as some other artistes; Peter Buck and Mike Mills were so camera-shy towards the end of the band's career that you were more likely to glimpse Osama bin Laden riding on the back of the Loch Ness Monster in an R.E.M. video. But they did delve into it. Michael Stipe, of course, is a producer, with the likes of Saved and Velvet Goldmine on his CV, while Mike Mills has dabbled in the world of soundtracks. But besides that level of involvement, and all the films that share names with R.E.M. songs – King Of Comedy, Drive, Let Me In and Hollow Man to name but four – the band have been influenced by movies, primarily lyrically. Take the following, for example... |

| | | The Ultimate Glasses Picture Quiz In Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, Gary Oldman plays spymaster George Smiley. And as anyone knows, George Smiley is a man with a very distinctive pair of glasses. But before you begin, know this: Woody Allen ain't in here. Why? Because we're doing one just on Woody Allen very, very soon... |
