 | This Week... It's been a busy week in the world of film. Brett Ratner and Eddie Murphy both left the Oscars, the former amid a mist of controversy and the latter out of loyalty to his Tower Heist director, it seems. But fear not! They've already been replaced by Brian Grazer and Billy Crystal, which means the show prep is still on track and we can hope for some sort of Princess Bride / When Harry Met Sally sketch in the mix of jokes somewhere. Closer to home, Johnny Depp came to London to talk The Rum Diaries, along with co-star Amber Heard and director Bruce Robinson. We also chatted to the lovely Rebecca Hall about The Awakening, director Sarah Smith about Aardman's none-more-Christmassy Arthur Christmas, and Tarsem Singh about his bananas (in a good way) Greek epic, Immortals. Frankly if it's not here it's not worth knowing: enjoy! Helen O'Hara Deputy Editor, Empire | | |

 | | | | | The Art Of Movie Title Punning Arthur Christmas is a pun, right? Because when you say it out loud, "Arthur Christmas" sounds like "Father Christmas", doesn't it? Kind of? Sorta? Maybe? It's got to be a pun. After all, they could have picked any other boy's name, but instead they go for the most assonant one to "Father" they could find. It must be a pun. A very subtle, very weird pun. | | | |

 | | | | | Johnny Depp Talks The Rum Diary Johnny Depp is not only one of the nicest men in Hollywood, he's also one of the most famous. In fact, you might have already heard of him - you know, he was the one in Freddy's Dead: The Final Nightmare? Still nothing? Oh well, right you are. Still, trust us, he's a top guy - as this video interview proves, discussing everything from his favourite muppet to the Withnail & I quotes he can't help but say every single day. | | |
| | | Amber Heard Talks The Rum Diary With '50s matinee idol looks and a big screen presence, The Rum Diary's Amber Heard is an up-and-coming starlet to keep an eye on. Rumours have it that she saw off more established actresses like Scarlett Johansson and Keira Knightley to the win the part of Chenault in the movie, a role she describes as "the filling in a Johnny Depp and Aaron Eckhart sandwich". It even took her out to the Caribbean to work with the director of Withnail And I. Question is, what exactly attracted her to the project? |
| | | Empire Meets Bruce Robinson If you plotted the contours of Bruce Robinson's career it'd look a little like the line on a hospital monitors. There have been heady highs (the enduring status of Withnail And I, an Oscar nod for his Killing Fields screenplay) and lows that'd have a man bending the ear of the nearest timberwolf. Happily for anyone who feared it'd flat-lined for good since his catastrophic experience on Jennifer 8, Robinson is back with The Rum Diary, a wild and whimsical origin story for the late Hunter Thompson. It's well known that Robinson was brought on at the behest of fanatical Withnail fan Johnny Depp, and as we discovered, there's more than a homage to that film in his adaptation of Thompson's book... |
| | | Empire's Essential Christmas Guide 2011 Christmas is, as the saying goes, the most wonderful time of the year. For some it's a time for family, friends and good food; for others a celebration of mangers, wise men and hotels with insufficient accommodation to meet basic demand. For most of us, however, it's all about the presents. With that in mind, we've scoured the four corners of the Internet for a comprehensive list of material things to covet, from best-in-class electronics to a selection of quirky stocking-fillers. If it's not on this list then you don't need it. |
| | | We're All Living In A Sci-Fi Movie Does anyone else have the impression that science fiction is becoming science fact faster than it used to? It certainly seems that way when every other day brings news of impossible discoveries and exciting new developments. Phones we take for granted pack in more computing power than the entire Apollo mission that landed men on the moon and, frankly, knock Star Trek's tricorders in a cocked hat. But read on and discover a few more sci-fi concepts that are approaching reality... |
| | | Rebecca Hall Talks The Awakening In The Awakening, Rebecca Hall plays Florence Cathcart, a hoax debunker just after WWI. Asked by schoolmaster Robert Mallory (Dominic West) to come to his boarding school in the north of England, she must prove that the rumours of a ghostly child murdering the pupils aren't, in fact, true. Here's our interview with the lovely lady, which reveals just what a die-hard Wire fan she is, as well as how she got Dominic West drunk. Of course. |
| | | Immortals: Empire On Set Our Nev Pierce went on set of Immortals way back when, to talk to director Tarsem Singh and his gods and monsters. Here's a close look behind the scenes of his Greek epic, with the director explaining his crazy visual style and what attracted him to the mythical story, as well as a few words from Henry "Superman" Cavill about his role as Theseus, hero-type and warrior par excellence, and Freida Pinto about playing a sort of Greek Virgin Mary... |
| | | James Cameron Talks Titanic 3D Titanic is coming back to our screens this April in a shiny, new 3D conversion. And like an approaching iceberg, there's nothing you can do to stop it. But James Cameron, the man who wrangled the giant ship on to screens to huge success back in 1998, wants you to be happy with the idea of revisiting Rose, Jack and the rest. So he showed 18 minutes of 3D-retooled footage, and then took the stage at 20th Century Fox's Zanuck screening room. for a round of his usual candid showmanship to explain why. |
| | | Sarah Smith On Arthur Christmas Aardman director Sarah Smith has been with the Bristol-based animation house for about five and a half years now, and this, her first feature, is the resulting CGI movie, starring the likes of James McAvoy, Hugh Laurie, Jim Broadbent, Bill Nighy, Imelda Staunton and Ashley Jensen. It is one of the Christmassiest things ever, and as such, we sent our Christmas correspondent, Lucy Quick, to investigate... |
| | | Empire Meets Errol Morris Errol Morris is a revolutionary; an interrogator, an investigator, an inventor, and a documentarian who creates reality as he reconstructs it. When the chance came to throw some questions at the master questioner on a pewter grey day in Covent Garden, Empire leapt at it. Here's what he had to tell us about the highs and lows of his 35 year career. |
