This Week...

This week, The Hobbit trailer has been rocking our world, with everyone clustered around computer screens trying to figure out which bits fit where and who's doing what. And, of course, whose brilliantly demented idea it was to offer alternative endings for trailers nowadays. We can only hope that that's swiftly followed by commentaries, 'making of's and deleted scenes. We bet that, if they really looked, they could come up with a full two hours of trailer material and release that on the big screen to really get everyone excited...wait. Never mind. Here on Empire, we've also been looking at ludicrously OTT film box-sets, examining cinematic visions of the future and asking you to vote for your favourite horror movie characters ever. Are you more a fan of the heroes or the villains? Drop by the site and let us know.

Hold onto your wizard's hats, it's Tolkien time. The first trailer for The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey has halloowed its way onto the internet and it looks rather wizard. The first part of Peter Jackson's trilogy sets the scene for the darkening mood and ever-greater perils that will beset the dwarves' journey to the Lonely Mountain over the final two instalments.

The Most Ludicrous DVD/Blu-ray Box Sets Ever
If you like a film, chances are you might get the DVD. If you love a film, you may end up getting the Blu-ray, the special collector's edition, the director's cut, the collectible bust and even the ultimate-limited-exclusive-super-duper-briefcase packaging that requires batteries for all the lights and sound effects. The following 21 box sets are the silliest - and sometimes, most impressive - versions of the latter, boasting everything from jewellery boxes to apes' upper torsos. But be warned: some of these babies are expensive, so read on at your peril.

    The Empire Podcast #29
Olivia Williams and Ken Loach drop by for a chat on the latest Empire Podcast, this week helmed not by that Chris Hewitt fellow, but by Helen O'Hara, who is covering our regular host while he's off in Hollywoodland. As well as those two interviews, there are lots of news stories to discuss and your questions to answer, with the ongoing Avengers Blu-ray conundrum, "sick day movies", shouting out in the cinema and more getting a good going over.

Travolta, Hayek, Stone, Lively And More Talk Savages
When a film has a cast that includes the likes of Taylor Kitsch, Blake Lively, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, John Travolta, Benicio del Toro, Salma Hayek and Demián Bichir, you'd be a mad not to politely accept their request to meet up with them for a chat in front of some TV cameras. Fortunately - despite appearances - we're not mad, and so here are several very enlightening video interviews with the director (Oliver Stone) and cast of the marijuana-scented crime drama, Savages.

    How Cinema Sees The Future
From Blade Runner to The Fifth Element, from Total Recall to Dredd, cinema has often been called upon to give us a sneak peek into the future. What is in store for us? How will the planet look a few centuries or millennia from now? If the production designers of Hollywood are to be believed, it will look pretty darn cool and probably have floating things. Here are a few examples of future Earths - so no spaceships, no alien planets and nowhere that just looks a bit grotty...

Vote For The Best Horror Movie Characters
It's time to face your worst fears and vote for the best horror movie characters. We want to know the heroes and villains who crawled under your skin, sent shivers up your spine and then burst out of your chest. Was it Norman Bates taking a shower in Psycho? Laurie fighting off Michael Myers? Or Randy talking scary movies in Scream? Let us know you five favourite below, and then go hide under your bed until the monsters go away...

    The Ultimate Bicycle Picture Quiz
Consider yourself a cycling nut? What about cycling in cinema? Test your knowledge of everyone's favourite two-wheeled transportation device on the big screen with this handy picture quiz. Just work out the name of the film to which the still belongs, pop it in the box and wait for the smile-enducing green tick to appear. Good luck, and don't forget to look both ways.

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey - Trailer Breakdown
The good thing about the onset of autumn this year is that it brings us ever closer to December - and with it, Peter Jackson's latest Middle-Earth story in The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey. We saw the first trailer back last December but here at last is a follow-up and something of a companion piece. Let's pore over it and see what we can spot, shall we? Spoilers, as ever in trailer breakdowns, may occur...

Exclusive Benicio Del Toro Webchat Transcript
Benicio Del Toro has acted in the likes of The Usual Suspects, Snatch, Che, Sin City, The Way Of The Gun, 21 Grams and many more - but it wasn't until Savages that he got to work with Oliver Stone. Here in his very own Empire webchat, he tells us about working with the award-winning director as well as how many times people say "Hand me the fucking keys, you cocksucker" when he's walking down the street...

A World Of Warcraft Mists Of Pandaria strategy guide. That makes no sense to us, but James screamed with joy and ran around in circles and then called in sick, so we guess it's good.

Flying saucers are known as Satellite Wafers in America.

There is such a thing as fire tornadoes. The weather just got much scarier.

When Blake Lively questioned one of her lines in Savages, Oliver Stone claims he responded, "I wrote Scarface. Say the line." We kinda hope he's kidding, and also don't.

Swedish Fish have a life expectancy of under 5 minutes in the Empire office.

    Killing Them Softly

A good, efficient crime thriller, let down by clunky social commentary but lifted by excellent performances, including perhaps Brad Pitt's recent best.

    Avengers Assemble

The Avengers have been assembled and, for the most part, they fit together superbly. A joyous blend of heroism and humour that raises the stakes even as it maintains a firm grip on what makes the individual heroes tick.
