 | This Week... There's a little bit of everything on Empire this week. On the podcast, we interviewed Oscar-winning director and general action goddess Kathryn Bigelow as well as sword-wielder extraordinaire James Purefoy. On video, we spoke to the stars of The Sessions about their Oscar-nominated film and the nudity in it (it's tasteful, don't worry). And we also profiled all this year's visual effects Oscar nominees , so that we can all take a close look at their work and form opinions even on the technical categories. But more important even than this is the fact that it's snowing! Which makes us think about snowy films, and means this is a perfect weekend to imagine Edward Scissorhands on a rooftop somewhere, furiously carving ice or - if you're more morbidly inclined - to wonder who's being fed through a woodchipper in a remote woodland cabin as we speak... | | | | | Monsters, Inc. cake pops, to celebrate the film's 3D re-issue this week. Good news: Sulley and Mike, as well as being scary, are also delicious. | | | |

 | | | | Finally learned to tune out! Yes! I have no idea what Chris just said, only that it was wrong. | | | | | | Ally finally adjusts to office life. | | |

 | | | | | HMV And The Dying Art Of Browsing Every Friday, I do a slot on a BBC radio show which is broadcast from just off Oxford Street. Every Friday after it's done, I walk back to the Empire offices in Covent Garden. And every Friday - and don't tell my boss - I pop into the HMV on Oxford Street (the big HMV, not the one in the basement of Selfridges), partially because it's on my route back to the office, and partially because it gives me an experience that's pretty much unique for a film fan in the UK: honest-to-goodness browsing. | | | |

 | | | | | Making Magic: Behind The Scenes Of This Year's Oscar-Nominated Visual Effects The Academy Award for Best Visual Effects kicked off with a Lucas-versus-Spielberg battle of the buddies in 1977, Star Wars pipping Close Encounters to the inaugural gong. Since then, it's recognised barrier-busting movies like Who Framed Roger Rabbit, Terminator 2, Jurassic Park and The Matrix. This year is no exception in the innovation stakes, especially if you're a fan of jungle-real tigers, extra-terrestrial nastiness, Hulk smashing and trolls, lots of trolls. | |
| | | The Empire Podcast #44 This week, the Empire Podcast team mourn the (potential) loss of HMV on the high street, interview Zero Dark Thirty director Kathryn Bigelow and The Following star James Purefoy, review Django Unchained, The Sessions and Monsters, Inc. 3D and answer listeners' ever-so-slightly bonkers questions. Listen out for a passionate discussion of movie pet hates, and be sure to let us know your own over the next few weeks... |
| | | John Hawkes And Helen Hunt On The Sessions Last time we chatted with John Hawkes, he was talking Martha Marcy May Marlene. In it he played a cult leader who provides an unnervingly predatorial presence in the lives of his devotees. By contrast, his character in The Sessions, a quadriplegic poet called Mark O'Brien, is waaay down the other end of the spectrum. O'Brien is still a virgin and determined to change that, with the help of Helen Hunt's sex surrogate, Cheryl Cohen-Greene. Perhaps surprisingly, Hunt was the one who picked up the Oscar love, with a nomination for Best Supporting Actress, although both excel. We asked them both to tell us about making the movie. |
| | | Oscars 2013: Who Missed Out There was much rejoicing when the Academy Award nominations were announced last Thursday - but spare a thought for those who weren't included. Every year some hotly-tipped stars, directors and crew members must see their efforts go unrewarded - and here's a look at this year's surprise omissions, and why they might have missed out... |
| | | Infographic: 2013 Oscar Nominations By Numbers An intriguing Oscars awaits us with Amour up for Best Picture, Quvenzhané Wallis setting a record as the youngest ever Oscar nominee, and Lincoln up for several kilos worth of statuettes. But do you know which other foreign language films have been nominated for the big prize or who the most nominated actor is at this year's awards? Here's where to find out. |
| | | Deadline Extended! Done In 60 Seconds Due to popular demand we have now extended the deadline for this year's Done In 60 Seconds competition to January 30 for UK entries! That's right, you now have an extra few days to put the final touches to your masterpiece before you send it over to us to judge! And again, please note that this extension only applies to the UK, all other countries must submit their entries by January 20 - we wouldn't want you to miss out! | | | |

 | | | | | In less cuddly cake news, a Warm Bodies brain cake made us think at least one-and-a-half times before we decided to just go ahead and eat it. That's out February 8. | | | |

 | | | | | Django Unchained Another strong, sparky and bloody entry in the QT canon. Although, creaking under its running time, it's not quite as uproariously entertaining as his last pseudo-historical adventure, Inglourious Basterds. | | | | Also Out | | | This week's video trailers and clips. Every week, our video player will update to show trailers and clips from the week's movie releases listed above. | | |

 | | | | | Shadow Dancer As beige as an old PC, but beneath the surface the blood pumps bright scarlet. An intelligent and emotionally charged spy drama. | | | | Also Out | | |
