There we were, all set to dress up as Slightly Scruffy Geeks for Halloween (as is traditional) and then Bryan Singer brought out a whole new X-Men trailer and we wondered if we should rethink our plans. Perhaps, we thought, we could get away with head-to-toe black leather after all? Maybe fitted body armour or merely blue body paint is the way to go? Thankfully, by the time we finished interviewing Singer about the film and writing our exhaustive trailer breakdown , the urge had passed and cooler heads had prevailed. Then we got the new issue of Empire, with its four fabulous Hobbit covers, and decided that we should dress up as hobbits and elves instead, but sadly I wasn't able to grow a long-enough beard in time and Chris flatly refused to get blond extensions and a bow-and-arrow. So instead we're just going to recommend that you pick up a copy to read all about The Desolation Of Smaug, X-Men: Days Of Future Past and much, much more.

The Hobbit: The Desolation Of Smaug -
Four Stunning Collector's Covers To Collect!

To mark an exclusive look at Peter Jackson's new film that would have Radagast the Brown rabbit-sledging straight down to his local newsagent, we have created four limited-edition Hobbit covers to choose from. Your choices are Thorin Oakenshield (Richard Armitage) in Mirkwood, Gandalf the Grey in the dark domain of Dol Guldur and Bilbo, of course, clutching Sting as he treads through Smaug's lair in Erebor. Last but not least is Luke Evans' Bard the Bowman, a debutant in the second part of Peter Jackson's trilogy, defending Lake-Town from fiery menace.

X-Men: Days Of Future Past Trailer Breakdown
X-Men: Days Of Future Past unites two generations of mutants for the first time onscreen, with Hugh Jackman's Wolverine travelling back in time to warn the young Professor X (James McAvoy) and Magneto (Michael Fassbender) of the dark future that awaits all mutants unless they can change the course of history. The first trailer - essentially the footage that director Bryan Singer, returning as director for the first time since 2003's X-Men 2, debuted at Comic-Con in July - just went live. "It really is what we wanted from the first look at the movie," says Singer, talking exclusively to Empire just hours after the trailer's debut. "It's an emotional piece that has the characters and the pathos and the mission." Singer then went on to talk us through some of the key moments and images from the movie that could well be 2014's biggest blockbuster. For more from Singer, James McAvoy and Jennifer Lawrence on the movie, pick up the new issue of Empire for our world exclusive set visit report.

Who Are The New Mutants In X-Men: Days Of Future Past?
In the X-Men: Days Of Future Past trailer, which we've broken down here , you will spot lots of familiar mutant faces from both Bryan Singer's original X-Men series and Matthew Vaughn's X-Men: First Class. But in addition to all these already-beloved mutants there are four new additions to the franchise. So who are these guys, and what can they do? Here's a quick primer.

Stephen Gaghan On Writing Call Of Duty: Ghosts
Following on from Black Ops II's work with David S. Goyer, another established Hollywood screenwriter - Stephen Gaghan - was on scripting duties, so Empire got in touch with him to talk about his work with Activision and Infinity Ward (and how the experience compares to making movies).

50 Movie Stars You Didn't Know Had Changed Their Name (And A Few You Did)
Following Empire's all-singing, all dancing, ridiculously indispensible guide to Hollywood actor name pronunciation, here's an equally essential digest of those actors and actresses who have dared to establish careers under names that do not necessarily belong to them. Betty Perske? Johnny O'Keeffe? Phil Clapp? Bryan Trout? All await you among the 50 that follow...

Classic Kids' TV Shows That Still Rock Our World
The news that Weta is rebooting Gerry Anderson's Thunderbirds for the small screen, with Rosamund Pike joining International Rescue as Lady Penelope and the original Parker busy MOTing that pink limo, sent a thrill through the big kid in us. It also got us thinking about other kids' old TV animations that still stand up in the era of Earth's Mightiest Heroes, Max Steel and Rocket Monkeys. Here are 30 childhood favourites we still cherish.

Vote For The Greatest Video Games Of All Time
With not one but two new consoles being released in November, the current games generation is gradually drawing to a close. What better time, then, to cast a rose-tinted eye back over the years of games gone by and pluck out those special few that have shaped us all as gamers. Recall those memories of burning the midnight oil as you took down Ragnaros in World of Warcraft, acquired those final stars in Super Mario World or mastered that ten-hit combo in Tekken. Relive the glory of confronting Sephiroth, saving Princess Zelda or pulling off your very first Tetris. Think very hard and nominate your top five choices for Empire's list of the greatest video games of all time.

The 666 Greatest Horror Characters Of All Time
Last year, you may recall, we asked you for your votes as we embarked upon the most terrifying - on any number of levels - feature in our history. The votes came in, we started work on a bogstandard 50 Greatest Characters list and then we asked ourselves: what would Damien Thorn do? Surely he would do something grander, more diabolical. And so, after a year of compiling, here it is, the 666 greatest horror movie characters, as voted for by Team Empire and you. It's filled with masked maniacs, Final Girls, ghouls, goblins, witches, zombies, vampires, werewolves, nerdy heroes, stalkers, slashers, monsters, monster hunters, demons, devils, deadly dolls and Warwick Davis. Enjoy... if you dare! (maniacal laughter, flash of lightning, repeat to fade).

A Guide To Shooting A London Thriller
From The Lodger to Luther, camera crews have been ubiquitous on London's streets for a century. There's barely an alley or alcove that hasn't hosted a foot chase, even Dominic Toretto has raced its mysteriously traffic-free streets, and we're one more helicopter shot of The Shard away from hitting ourselves over the head with a truncheon. The question is, then, how do you show audiences a fresh side of the Old Smoke? We thought we'd ask John Crowley, the man behind legal thriller Closed Circuit, for some tips. As he tells Empire: "I'm totally in love with this city."

Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom Charity Gala
Vue Entertainment is bringing iconic movie legend Indiana Jones back to UK cinemas in November - with one-off screenings of the classic 80s film trilogy over three successive weeks, plus a charity gala event in London's West End. And now they are returning to the big screen at Vue's fully-digital cinemas, featuring state-of-the-art audio-visual technology, over three successive Tuesdays - Raiders of the Lost Ark Tuesday Nov 12, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom Tuesday Nov 19, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade Tuesday Nov 26 - with adult tickets costing just £5. Brie Larson Talks Short Term 12
If you've read our review of Short Term 12 - or if you've just watched Short Term 12 - you'll know that its star, Brie Larson, is excellent in it. A tale of a foster home carer, her boyfriend and the children they look after together, SS12 one of the best films you'll see this year - should you go to see it this weekend, November 1, that is. We caught up with Larson over the phone for a piece in this month's issue of Empire, and here below is the extended edition, which manages to not mention her turn as Envy Adams in Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World, but does touch on her role as Rachel in Community...

9 Creepy Horror Kids - Then And Now
Once they made us feel for their terror-filled eyes, or chilled our bones with their (mainly) evil ways. Now? They've all grown up and moved on to other things. In the spirit of impending Halloween, we thought it time to catch up with Hollywood's most haunted kids and take a look at them now.

    Empire's X-Files Celebration
Nine years, 202 episodes, a host of indelible characters, about six thousand packets of Morleys and some deeply sinister goings-on, The X-Files is a show worth celebrating - and celebrate it is what we've done. And then some. We put tape on the windows of Empire HQ and waited for its leading lights to emerge from the shadows. Chris Carter... Walter Skinner... Smoking Man... Mulder and Scully... Krycek... they all joined us for our X-travanganza. The truth is out there? Pah. It's right here.

The Jameson Empire Done In 60 Seconds Ironman Challenge!
Given that 2014 will be Empire's 25th anniversary year, we felt it was appropriate to pick a movie from the year of our inception: 1989 - so not Inception, then. We thought about Batman, we pondered Indiana Jones And The Last Crusade, we almost went for Bill And Ted's Excellent Adventure before realising it was made on the budget of a DISS movie anyway. Then it hit us, the perfect choice. Something we have all experienced, albeit in slightly less posh surroundings: school. So start channelling your best Peter Weir, brush up on your Walt Whitman, dust down your sixth form blazer, put a call through to your old alma mater for your location shoot, and track down your perfect Knox Overstreet, for it is time to seize the day! Oh captain, my captain, this year's Done In Sixty Seconds 'IRONMAN' Challenge movie is DEAD POETS SOCIETY.

    The 100 Sexiest Movie Stars
You voted in your tens of thousands and here, at last, are the results, the Sexiest Movie Stars of 2013. And frankly we think it's a darn good list, a list that shows you guys are discerning in your tastes and able to look beyond mere spectacular good looks to spot the stars who have that extra attractiveness within. Check out the list and see if your favourites made the cut.
