 | This Week... The BFI London Film Festival is in full swing this week, and our Chris and Sam have been running around like headless chickens trying to cover all that's been going on. But don't feel too sorry for them! Their efforts have landed them in the extremely gorgeous company of Colin Firth, Helena Bonham Carter, Michelle Williams and Hilary Swank this week alone, and there's still days and days of the Festival left. In addition, we've been getting our Aliens on as the Alien Anthology release approaches (on Monday), and revisiting the series to date. Ever wonder what happened to all the Colonial Marines? Fear not: they're here. And we've got the full story of what happened to Alien3. But if you're still not scared by all of that, gird your loins, screw your courage to the sticking place and brave our Scary Babies feature - if you dare! | | | | | The London Film Festival Videblogisodes The BFI London Film Festival stepped up a gear this week, boasting a huge mix of Hollywood and homegrown talent. And as always, our Chris was there to harass welcome them all, getting the full story on films from Mike Leigh's Another Year to Conviction and Blue Valentine and chatting to stars from Hilary Swank to Michelle Williams and Jim Broadbent. It's a hard life for some people, eh? With The King's Speech and Black Swan on their way over the weekend, you'll need to keep checking back to get all the gossip, glitz and glamour from London's biggest and best film celebration. | | | |
 |
 | | | | | John Landis Webchat He's a legend in the field of horror - and comedy - and John Landis is back back back with Burke and Hare, out this Friday. And to celebrate we're having the big man himself in to the office on Monday 25 at 1pm to face the piercing questions of Empire readers. Ask about An American Werewolf in London, Trading Places, The Blues Brothers, Thriller, Three Amigos and of course his new story of the Edinburgh murderers (starring Andy Serkis and Simon Pegg), or just come along and enjoy his virtual company over your lunch hour. You know you want to... | | |
| | | Scary Babies: Cinema's Creepiest Infants Babies, eh? Cute little buggers, laughing and crying and pooing and all that. You may not like 'em now, but chances are you'll suddenly have a change of heart and want loads when the time is right. Unless, of course, you're a film fan (and we're guessing you are) and you've met any of these little monsters, the two foot tearaways that the horror genre has given birth to, designed mainly to make you wet yourself. So out of respect for the scary baby Hall Of Fame's latest addition, that scamp from Paranormal Activity 2, here's some of our favourite scary little toddlers… |
| | | Video: Edgar Ramirez Talks Carlos Born in Venezuela, multilingual and passionately engaged in international politics, Edgar Ramirez was the perfect choice to play Illich Ramirez Sanchez - aka 'Carlos the Jackal' - who was born in Venezuela, multilingual and passionately engaged in blowing stuff up. They even share a name. Having popped up in The Bourne Ultimatum and Che, Ramirez knows his way around the shadier corners of international diplomacy and black ops - and it shows. He's terrific in a movie that he was at pains to explain, is definitely NOT a biopic. The up-and-coming actor explained his feelings about the terrorist/revolutionary, and what it was like to put on enough pounds for the role to have Jake LaMotta rushing for the celery sticks. |
| | | Video: Legend of the Guardians Interviews It's a cross between The Lord of the Rings and Watership Down - but with wings. Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga'Hoole is an epic adaptation of the novels by Kathryn Lasky. We talked to director Zack Snyder, and voice leads Jim Sturgess - who voices hero owl Soren - and Ryan Kwanten - who plays Kludd - to get the rundown on this huge adventure, and the very first word on Superman... |
| | | Whatever Happened To The Colonial Marines? The Colonial Marines of James Cameron's Aliens seem unstoppable when we're first introduced to them: muscly, heavily armoured and totally gung-ho. But then they meet an enemy completely outside of their experience and, frankly, completely outside their capabilities. We talked to all the Marines about their characters, their fates and the experience of working on Aliens. WARNING: This includes Aliens spoilers, since we list when certain Marines buy the farm. |
| | | Alien3: Set Visit To A Troubled Sequel While its reputation is somewhat mixed, Alien3 had a fascinating journey from concept to screen. After an entirely nixed start (the so-called "wooden planet" concept), a young up-and-comer called David Fincher was brought aboard to tell a prison planet-set story. The shoot was famously turbulent, and post-production even more so. Here we have a first-hand report from the set, back in 1991, which gives an insight into just what went on… |
| | | Alien 3: The Lost Tale Of The Wooden Planet Everyone knows that Alien3 had a troubled production - but what people don't know is just how far down the line director Vincent Ward's "wooden planet" version of the story got before it was jettisoned in favour of the prison planet which eventually appeared onscreen. What follows is Empire's investigation into the history of this lost movie, with input from Ward himself and his creative team on what went on and what went wrong... |
| | | Great Movies That Are Also TV Shows A leather-clad outlaw to give since Jacques Mesrine a run for his unmarked francs, Carlos was developed as a three part miniseries for French TV and in shorter, feature-film format concurrently. It's not the first time different versions of a story have appeared on big and small screens. Some started out as movies before reaching the diode (Das Boot), some as TV pilots that went horribly wrong (Mulholland Drive), and some as herculean endurance tests that you can watch in one sitting but only if you're got 16 hours spare (Berlin Alexanderplatz). They've all made it to our cinemas in one form or another. Here's how. |
| | | Clio Barnard Talks The Arbor Clio Barnard's new documentary, The Arbor, was originally supposed to be the story of playwright Andrea Dunbar. But as she investigated the story, she discovered another story in Dunbar's daughters, and her finished film focuses as much on the two daughters as it does on their mother. With actors acting our their words rather than sticking to the traditional documentary format, it's an inventive approach - and we sent Phil down to chat to those involved and get the full story. |
| | | The Ultimate Birds Picture Quiz Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga'Hoole could well be the most bird-centric film of all time. And as it's out this week, it made us think about other beloved bird brains that we've enjoyed getting to know on film, and before you know it, suddenly we had a picture quiz on our hands. You know how it works: identify the film from the tiny snaphot we provide, then plonk the movie's name in the box beneath it. Green tick=win; red cross=try again. Good luck, and just be grateful we didn't make any fowl puns in the intro. Oh. Sorry about that. |
| | | Video: Bruce Willis And Mary Louise Parker On Red Bruce Willis - the man, the myth, the legend - was in town earlier this week to talk about Red, his none-more-starry new thriller which also boasts the talents of Morgan Freeman, John Malkovich, Helen Mirren and more. His co-star Mary Louise Parker, much beloved by West Wing and Weeds fans, also dropped in to say hello. We asked them both for their take on the retired assassins at the heart of the story, how they assembled such an amazing cast and who was funniest on set... |
| | | Africa United Video Interviews It's already been compared to Slumdog Millionaire, but Africa United, from new director Debs Gardner-Paterson, is very much its own beast. It's the tale of a group of three Rwandan street kids who decide to make their own way to South Africa for the World Cup, and we talked to those involved to get the full story on making an epic road movie... |
| | | Jameson Empire Awards Done In 60 Seconds Competition Ladies and gentlemen, it's back - and this time it's personal. It's time once again for the Empire and Jameson Done In Sixty Seconds competition, where we ask you to recreate classic movies in no more than a minute. You must take a piece of cinematic genius (or not-so-genius if you prefer), boil it down to its essence and cram it all into a timeframe shorter than the life expectancy of the comedy sidekick in a slasher movie. To take part in this year's competition and be in with a chance of winning an Empire Award and attending the star-studded and glittering Jameson Empire Awards in March 2011, grab some mates and blag a camera from somewhere and get shooting. To sixty seconds, and not beyond! |
