 | This Week... This week got off to a pretty glamorous start when we headed to the British Academy Film Awards, or BAFTAs as they're more commonly known. Our Chris and Sam were on the red carpet kicking interview and taking names, and I was up in the press room blogging events as they happened. And by "events", I of course mean "awards given to The King's Speech". Come the end of the week, and preparations got seriously underway for another rather fabulous event on the movie calendar, as we announced the 20 finalists for the Jameson Empire Done In Sixty Seconds competition. The winner gets to hang with the stars - and more importantly, the Empire staff - at the Empire Awards in March, so get along and vote for your favourite right now. | | | | Under more normal circumstances, I would be very excited about this, but in the seat in front of me was one of the Beatles, and in the seat in front of him was Julianne Moore and in front of her was Annette Bening so I'm maxed out. | | | | | What's The Most Used Song In Movies? AC/DC's Back In Black has been following me around of late. One day a couple of months ago I went to see Megamind, in which it features, and then chucked on an episode of Supernatural when I got home, where it also featured*. Yesterday I had to watch some extras on the Lilo & Stitch DVD, in particular the clever "Inter-Stitch-ial" teaser trailers wherein Stitch invades other classic Disney films. And what tune plays over the clips that follow? You guessed it: Back In Black. And of course it's closely associated with Tony Stark and Iron Man. Basically, if you're trying to establish that some dude is a bit of a maverick, it appears to be the go-to song. | | | |

| | | Video: The Paul Stars Take On The Ultimate Sci-Fi Quiz Grudgematch Besides the amazingly popular webchat we had with Pegg and Frost last Friday, we also had these ever-so-humourous video interviews with the cast, including the nerdy comedy duo themselves, as well as Jason Bateman, Greg Mottola, and Sigourney motherflippin' Weaver. But besides asking them all the regular hard-hitting journalistic questions ("What's the biggest dog you've ever seen?" etc.) we thought we'd do a quiz. A sci-fi quiz, to be precise, and the answers we received were... intriguing. To say the least. So to find out what Sigourney Weaver thinks the aliens in District 9 are called, click on... |
| | | The Ultimate Cross-Dressing Picture Quiz Try not to get too excited you guys, but Big Momma's: Like Father, Like Son is finally coming out. That's right, Big Momma's House 3, except this time there are two Big Mommas. One Big Momma is, of course, Martin Lawrence, the other is his movie stepson, Trent Pierce (Brandon T. Jackson), who - for some reason - is obliged to dress up as a woman too. Oh dear, this suddenly sounds very humourous and such. So to, um, 'celebrate' the film's release, here's a quick picture quiz on men and women in the movies who dress up like the opposite gender. Bet you didn't see that coming... |
| | | X-Men: First Class Trailer Breakdown The first trailer for Matthew Vaughn's X-prequel was unveiled, and it's got the interwebs buzzing. But what's going on here? Who are these people? And what can you expect from the film itself? We take the trailer apart shot-by-shot to find out… |
| | | The New Documentary Stars As Mark 'Smartypants' Twain once pointed out, "Truth is stranger than fiction," and this year's Oscar Best Documentary picks and new documentary releases definitely bear out his words. Even among the arm-sawing climbers and stammering monarchs, it's hard to overlook a set of mesmerising true-life tales that speak of eye-watering corruption, hair-trigger tension and postmodern pop artists. Legendary documentarian Errol Morris is an elder statemen for this tribe of newbie (and not so new) filmmakers, but we've packed our Arriflex and tracked down six of the directors currently electrifying the documentary form. If you know your cinéma vérité from your direct cinema, here are a few names you should be familiar with. |
| | | Video: Aaron Sorkin On The Social Network Around these parts he earned his place in the Pantheon with The West Wing, one of the greatest TV shows ever made. Now playwright, showrunner and screenwriter Aaron Sorkin is Oscar nominated for The Social Network (out on DVD on February 14), so we leapt at the chance to talk to him on a flying visit to London recently about working with Fincher, finding a way in to recent history and what's next... |
| | | Simon Pegg and Nick Frost Webchat Transcript Aliens. Nerds. Secret agents. Explosions. Swearing. Sigourney bloody Weaver. Paul is a geek's very geeky wet dream, so as there are few geeks here in Empire towers, we were ever-so-slightly excited to have Paul's leading men (and scriptwriters) Simon Pegg and Nick Frost into our office for a little chat. In the process, they broke the record for the number of people attending an Empire webchat, with approximately a kersquillion of you guys logging on. So for those of you who didn't make it, here's the transcript in full, you lucky, lucky people... | | | |
