 | This Week... This may have been the best week ever in the Empire office. Not only did we play host to our aul' muckers Simon Pegg and Nick Frost for a webchat (in addition to some very fun Paul interviews), but none other than Ethan Coen also dropped back to talk about True Grit, explain the opening scene of A Serious Man (sort of) and reveal his favourite sandwich. And then, of course, we announced the mammoth event that is Empire Presents... BIG SCREEN, a huge movie extravaganza taking place this summer. Keep a close eye out for more on our plans for that as August approaches, but believe me, it's going to be mega. Oh, and as if things couldn't get any better, someone delivered a sphere of solid chocolate for us all to snack on. Now if we can just find some unicorns on which to ride home this evening, that'll be the perfect week. Helen O'Hara Deputy Online Editor, Empire | | |

 | | | | | 11 Ways To Get The Spidey Reboot Right A few nights ago, some friends and I were discussing where the much-maligned, series-killing Spider-Man 3 went wrong (which is a subject for a whole other blog) and it got me thinking about the upcoming reboot. At first, I was pretty sceptical about starting all over again so soon. My spider-senses are also still tingling over a few of the casting decisions (Rhys Ifans, I hope you prove me wrong). But ever since Sony released the perfectly-moody shot of Andrew Garfield in the new suit, I'm suddenly excited at the prospect, and definitely more so than I was for the story to carry on with a fourth. | | | |

 | | | | | A Brief History Of Boxing Biopics There is no sport that has had more movies made about it than boxing – and that's not including made-for-TV movies such as Tyson and Rocky Marciano. Maybe it's the passion that surrounds it, the sheet brutality of the sport, the money, the mobsters, the mystery… Whatever it is, it's brought amazing performances out of the acting profession since cinema first took over our lives way back when. But what makes the sport even more astounding – cinematically, at least – is that so many of the stories the films tell are true. Or, shall we say, are based on the truth. So now that The Fighter has hit the multiplexes, we thought we'd take a look back at boxing biopics gone by to see just how good they were, and how close they stayed to reality… | | |
| | | A Dozen Unconventional Romantic Gestures To Dazzle Your Valentine Flowers, heart-shaped chocolates, overpriced cards: what if you've been there and done that? You're going to need to try something new this Valentine's Day – and with the help of cinema, we've come up with a few ideas to wow your loved ones with. Sure, a few of them are slightly impractical and/or life-threatening, but we're sure you can find a way to make it work... |

| | | Emily Blunt on Gnomeo And Juliet We're proud to declare that Gnomeo And Juliet is easily the best Shakespearean-film-adaption-that-replaces-all-the-characters-with-gnomes-and-other-garden-ornaments we've ever seen, and that's a compliment we don't bestow lightly, believe you me. Stuffed to the rafters with an absurd amount of vocal talent (Ozzy Osbourne as a ceramic reindeer, Hulk Hogan as a lawnmower advert announcer, Michael Caine as a big ol' gnome) it's essentially the Shakespearean equivalent of Sly Stallone's star-studded actioner The Expendables. Except Sly's Sir Elton John (he produced it you see, and provided the music) and, you know, it's about gnomes and love and stuff. Not guns and death and stuff. Anyway, when we got the chance to speak to Emily Blunt (gorgeous, hilarious, wonderful), Matt Lucas and Ashley Jensen (gorgeous, hilarious, wonderful), and director Kelly Asbury (gorgeous, hilarious, wonderful), we jumped at the chance. The results? Well, put it this way: prepare to fall in love with Emily Blunt. Again. |
| | | Never Let Me Go: Andrew Garfield And Mark Romanek Never Let Me Go is a difficult film to categorise: both retro and futuristic, science-fiction flavoured and nostalgic. But one thing's for sure: this story of three friends who grow up together in an unusual boarding school is one that lingers long after you've seen it, so we sat down with star Andrew Garfield and director Mark Romanek to get the full story on adapting the much-acclaimed novel and making it work onscreen... |
| | | True Grit: Jeff Bridges and Hailee Steinfeld The release of a new Coen Brothers movie is always an occasion for rejoicing, but that's particularly true when it's True Grit, their adaptation of Charles Portis' brilliant, offbeat Western. The film stars Hailee Steinfeld as the 14 year-old girl determined to get revenge on her father's killer, and Jeff Bridges as the one-eyed US Marshal she enlists to help her. We talked to both in London recently about working with the Coens and travelling back to the Old West... |
| | | Ethan Coen Webchat Transcript Showing no signs of saddlesoreness from all that travel talking about True Grit, Ethan Coen stopped by to answer questions from webchatters curious about he and his brother Joel's twist on Charles Portis' Western - and much more besides. If you've ever wondered how the Coen brothers discovered Hailee Steinfeld, which of their characters they're most proud of or just whether they can be found worshipping at the Church of the Latter-day Dude, it's all here. If you're Tara Reid you may want to avert your eyes around the halfway point. |
| | | Simon Pegg and Nick Frost on Paul This Monday is Valentine's Day, and it's all very exciting. Not just because you'll be snuggling up with your darling shnookums on the sofa, but also because Pegg and Frost's extra-terrestrial adventure Paul is hitting cinemas, and to celebrate that fact we thought we'd go have a chat with the movie's stars, including the likes of Simon and Nick themselves, Jason Bateman and Sigourney motherflippin' Weaver -- as well as director Greg "Superbad" Mottola. So from today onwards we'll be publishing a video a day, starting with Simon and Nick and ending with a very special piece on Monday. What is it, you wonder? Well, you'll have to wait till Valentine's Day... | | | |
