 | This Week... Well, awards season is finally over. The Jameson Empire Awards took place in London on Sunday, and it was a fantastic evening. We laughed, we cried, we drank quite a lot of whiskey and then all piled into the photobooth to record our shenanigans for posterity - oh, and some film stars turned up too. Host Dara O Briain admired the size of Colin Firth's testicles, Keira Knightley asked all and sundry for a snog, and Tom Hiddleston spilled the beans on Thor. Head on over and have a look at all our photos, videos and reports from the night, why don't you, and remember to start planning your Done In Sixty Seconds Entry so you can join us next year. | | | | | Superhero Movies, The Boom And Bust Cycle So Spider-Man and Superman are already being rebooted, and we've just learned that Batman's being rebooted again. That's the second go around for Spidey, the third for Supes and the fourth or fifth for the Caped Crusader (if you count his 60s incarnation, the Burton films, the Schumacher films (admittedly, that one's arguable), the Nolan films and now this proposed do-over). The X-Men are being prequel-ified, and there's even talk of a Fantastic Four reboot (because you know how the fans are baying for that one). So what's with all the do-overs? Why can't we just set the rules of the game and stick to them? And is this peculiar to superheroes or a general Hollywood thing? | | | |

| | | Video: Sucker Punch Interviews Sucker Punch's synapse-exploding rolecall of characters includes giant smashing robots, steam-fuelled zombie soldiers and fire-breathing dragons. Unfortunately not one of them was doing press so we decided to track down the movie's human cast instead. The movie tells the story of Baby Doll (Emily Browning) and her cohort of four ass-kicking companions Amber (Jamie Chung), Blondie (Vanessa Hudgens), Rocket (Jena Malone) and Sweet Pea (Abbie Cornish) who disappear down a rabbit hole filled into a violent wonderland. We chatted to the five actresses about battling all those dragons and robots. While we were about it, we caught up with their co-stars Carla Gugino and Oscar Isaac and the man himself, director Zach Snyder, about their deranged fairytale. |
| | | Video: Source Code Interviews The Source Code credit reel is a perfect storm of talent. There's Duncan Jones, the man behind the lunar brilliance of Moon; the ever-engaging Jake Gyllenhaal; the gifted, charming Vera Farmiga; and Michelle Monaghan who ticks all of those boxes (apart from the one about directing Moon). We sent our most resolute reporter to chat with the three cast members of Jones's sci-fi thriller about the movie's allure and working with the Moon man. |
| | | 15 Amazing Adverts from 15 Amazing Directors Many big name Hollywood directors made their name not on movie sets, but on commercial ones, earning a living selling bread (Ridley Scott), cars (Neill Blomkamp) and, well, everything else in the world (David Fincher). So after we saw Natalie Portman looking absurdly pretty in Sofia Coppola's Christian Dior advert recently, we thought it was high time to gather together our favourite adverts from our favourite directors, and here is the result... |
| | | Hellraiser Comics Revisited Last week marked Clive Barker's return to his signature creation, with a new co-authored Hellraiser comics series published by Boom Studios. While Hellraiser's mostly ignominious sequels have thrashed and moaned in straight-to-DVD purgatory (six of the - so far - nine films never saw a cinema screen), the franchise has a more credible history in comics. Marvel offshoot Epic Comics' 1990s run boasts early work by some surprising contributors, taking Barker's bonkers S&M theology in some intriguing directions. Here are a few examples. What is your pleasure? |
| | | Exclusive: Russell Brand Talks Hop We're sure that Russell Brand and James Marsden are best buds in real life but the gloves were definitely off during their interviews for Universal's new live-action animation Hop. We're not sure who decided to put them within earshot of each other during the movie's junket, but it backfired entertainingly as the pair sounded off about each other's previous roles (27 Dresses fans avert your eyes) from neighbouring rooms. Oh, and in between the abuse they chatted with us about their floppy-eared bunny wabbit E.B., star of Hop. This is not to be missed. |
| | | 65 Movie Twitterers You Should Follow A few months ago, we put together a 50 strong list of Hollywood's finest tweeters, from Simon Pegg to David Lynch, Tom Hanks to Arnie. But since then many more movie types have been making their presence felt in the Twittersphere and we thought it was high time to update our collection with 12 more of cinema's finest social media addicts. So without further ado, let's kick off with one of our favourites... That's right, it's Steve Martin, people. LOL! |
| | | The Ultimate Legs Picture Quiz We're not sure if you've noticed, but some of the ladies involved with this Sucker Punch movie fillum don't wear all that much in the leg department. In fact, you could say that they were provocatively dressed... on purpose! The idea of it! Then, looking back at cinema's rich and varied history, it seems that showing off your legs is pretty much encouraged. So in celebration of the finest pins in Hollywood, we've compiled a little picture quiz for you, and here it is. So, um, enjoy! |
| | | Exclusive: Killing Bono Interview Killing Bono - or as the actual Bono calls it, 'Killing Me' - is a comedy-drama about schoolboy rivalry spilling out of control as two brothers aspire to rock superstardom only to see schoolfriends U2 make it for real. Those two brothers are played by Ben Barnes and Robert Sheehan who chatted with us about the film. The twist? They were only allowed to use U2 song titles. While they tried to find a way to get Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me, Kill Me into their answers without causing an incident, they also told us about making the break in acting or, as Barnes calls it, "getting into the sexy harem". |
| | | Exclusive: Jim Loach Interview If that surname sounds familiar it's because Jim Loach is heir to one of Britain's great filmmaking legacies. He was born in the year his dad Ken was making Kes and his quietly powerful feature debut, Oranges And Sunshine, is proof that directing is very much in the family DNA. He's also a thoroughly nice guy as we discovered when we tracked him down to ask about his new drama. We also thought we'd find out if, in earlier days, he really did try to introduce Mike Leigh-style improv to the set of Corrie... |
