This Week...
The BFI London Film Festival kicked off in style this week, as Fernando Meirelles' 360 provided the opening gala and the stars turned out for the occasion. Jude Law, Terry Gilliam, Gillian Anderson, Tom Hiddleston and many more were in attendance, and while we instantly developed a serious crush on Jude Law's hat, the highlight of our evening was the revelation that there's a neon organ under the floor of the Odeon Leicester Square that makes an appearance on special occasions like this. We're not sure what the organist does when he's stuck down there the rest of the time, but he certainly added an extra touch to the evening. The Festival runs until October 26 - get down and catch some of this year's line-up if you can. If it's good enough for George Clooney (who has two films showing next week) it's good enough for you!

What's The Best Show On TV Right Now?
Last year, we bid farewell to the mysterious hatch-filled island of Lost. Year before that, we waved goodbye to the good ship Battlestar Galactica (so say we all) for the last time. And, in the three years prior to that, The Wire, The Sopranos and The West Wing all exited stage left on an annual basis. So, with all the heavy-hitters having packed up their bags and marched off to immortal glory like an outnumbered Spartan, what is now the best show on television?

The 100 Best British Films Ever
It's time to start singing Land Of Hope And Glory, down pints of warm beer and possibly have a nice cup of tea and a crumpet, because we have assembled the finest 100 British films ever made. It's been difficult to narrow down the selection and still represent the many facets of British cinema - from kitchen sink dramas to Cockney gangsters to boy wizards and costume dramas - but we think we've managed a pretty comprehensive selection. Step this way, and revel in some of the cinema world's best ever films.

How Do The Avengers Fit Into The Whedonverse?
One of the (many) reasons we're a bit excited about The Avengers is that Joss Whedon, who's writing and directing, has a history of writing great characters who interact brilliantly with one another. Buffy The Vampire Slayer, Angel, Firefly, Dollhouse, Dr Horrible's Sing-along Blog - all are chocka with memorable characters and fascinating dynamics. And while the characters of these heroes are already more-or-less established, the way that they interact in the particular circumstances of The Avengers film is only just beginning to be hinted at. Here's how The Avengers seem to be shaping up, comparative to the inhabitants of the Whedonverse - and yes, we know it's too early for anything but wild speculation, but that's the fun of the internet!

    Hugh Jackman Talks Real Steel
Hugh Jackman is a thoroughly brilliant bloke. We know this because we've met him, and he was an absolute charmer, offering us tea, a pillow and eventually... a hug. Yep, a hug. So for proof of all that, take a look at this video interview, where we end up talking Wolverine 2, heading to Japan, taking your top off on film and whether he's the most huggable man in Hollywood.

Orlando Bloom On The Three Musketeers
Paul W. S. Anderson's The Three Musketeers isn't like any other of those fusty, boring Three Musketeers films you've watched over the years. After all, this one's got airships, cannonball gatling guns and Milla flippin' Jovovich on board. Then there's Orlando Bloom as the beautifully quaffed Duke of Buckingham and Matthew Macfadyen as Athos, Ray Stevenson as Porthos, and finally Luke Evans as Aramis. We got the chance to sit down with all of them (on camera) last week, and here are the wonderful, hat-filled, swearing-laden videos to prove it. Seriously though, Orlando swears like a sailor. Don't say we didn't warn you...

The Three Musketeers - Compare And Contrast
Alexander Dumas' The Three Musketeers has made it to the screen many times through the years, with varying levels of success and degrees of fidelity to the source. Here, we gather together the biggest, non-silent English language versions - from 1948, 1973, 1993 and 2011 - and compare and contrast the casts that brought them to life.

    The Ultimate Robots Picture Quiz
Do you think we'd let Real Steel hit cinemas and not make an Ultimate Robots Picture Quiz? Well, exactly. So as Real Steel is all about the metal side of things, we've tried to avoid androids where we can - sorry Ash - and stick to the likes of Johnny 5 and co. As for who'd win in a fight, well, that's for you to decide. As ever, write the name of the film in the box beneath the image and wait for the tick (or the cross). Oh, and with any luck the forum should offer up hints and tips soon enough...

    Morgan Spurlock's Nine Entry-Level Documentaries
If you've watched our interview with Morgan Spurlock (see below), you'll already be aware of what we mean by a "gateway documentary". If you haven't, here's the scoop: it's a documentary that's perfect for everyone, something totally accessible, very rewatchable and essentially a bloody good laugh. In other words, head-scratchers like An Inconvenient Truth need not apply, but dissections on the world of competitive Donkey Kong-playing can. We've gathered together his recommended list and profiled them here, so you can find one that's perfect for you. So sit back, relax, and prepare to discover more about nine of the coolest documentaries ever made...

Morgan Spurlock On The Greatest Movie Ever Sold
Morgan Spurlock isn't your average documentarian. For one, he's got a kick-ass 'tache, and for two, he's willing to live out his oddball theories on camera, be it consuming McDonald's burgers every day for a month in Super Size Me or here in The Greatest Movie Ever Sold, where he tests the idea of whether you could make a movie about product placement in movies... and pay for it totally by product placement. In the very same movie. He's also an absolute gent, and as we got the chance to sit down and chat with him on camera recently, we thought we'd ask him about - whaddayaknow? - documentaries. Specifically, "gateway documentaries", i.e. documentaries that are perfect for people getting hooked on other, less accessible ones. So to find out what you'll be watching on DVD for the next few weeks, click play below...

Will Ferrell On Everything Must Go
Everything Must Go is a genuinely affecting, rather touching movie, boasting a rare dramatic turn from much-loved funny man Will Ferrell. He plays Nick Hasley, a man who's having a very bad day: his wife's left him, he's just fallen off the wagon, and what's more, he's just been fired. Bugger. So needless to say, when we got the chance to catch up with Mr. Ferrell, we asked him some truly ludicrous questions about dogs, muppets, musical interludes and why the film was nearly called Tango And Cash Part II. Here is the slightly awkward, wonderful result. Take that, Zach Galifianakis!

    Lee Child: Webchat Transcript
His huge, hulking hero Jack Reacher is beloved around the world, one of the most popular characters in modern fiction, and he's about to hit the screen in the slightly-smaller form of Tom Cruise. So now seemed like a good time to talk to Lee Child about his creation, its cinematic future and his favourite sandwiches. Don't worry; he talks more than Reacher, and he's funnier...

Pam Grier On Jackie Brown, In Her Own Words
It's strange now to remember the muted response that greeted Quentin Tarantino's third film: an adaptation of Elmore Leonard's hard-boiled novel Rum Punch, that transformed Jackie Burke into Jackie Brown. Still perhaps the overlooked middle child between QT's early films and his more recent work, it holds up on revisiting as more intricate than Reservoir Dogs and tighter in its focus than Pulp Fiction. While the likes of the Kill Bills and Inglourious Basterds have been high-concept comic books, Jackie Brown remains a love letter from Tarantino, both to seventies cinema, and to his star Pam Grier. To mark the release of the fifteenth-anniversary blu-ray, Grier took us through her photo album...

Harry Connick Jr Talks Dolphin Tale
Dolphin Tale is a sweet film about the friendship between a young boy and Winter, a dolphin who has her tail removed after getting caught in a crab trap. Dolphins can't survive without their tails, but don't fear, Harry Connick Jn and Morgan Freeman come along to save the day, fitting Winter with a prosthetic. Think it sounds far fetched? Then you'd be wrong - it's actually a true story. We hung out with the incredibly charming Harry Connick Jn to get the low down on working with kids, animals and Morgan Freeman...

The word "ampersand" comes from the conflation of "and per se and".

Don't just walk into the gym studio and assume you're in pilates class; you might be in body pump, and then you might spend a week in extreme pain. Y'know, theoretically.

Bonnie Wright likes cool flavour Doritos.

Footloose dancing is not as easy as the movie stars make it look.

Hugh Jackman, however, can dance the robot rather well.

The realities of time travel. Thinking woman's crumpet... A Gears of War gun, made from Lego. Movie line rhymes.

If you have any timewasters to share, then e-mail them in to me.

Following last week's Lee Child webchat, James gets a new T-shirt to get him through the day

    Real Steel

Rocky with robots? It's not quite in Balboa's weight class, but Real Steel at least has some heft. There's barely a story beat among the beat-downs that you won't expect, and sometimes the saccharine gets in the way of the spectacle, but on the whole this is enjoyable family entertainment.

    Also Out
Footloose A newer version of the same old number.
Sleeping Beauty The feel-up film of the season.
    Dolphin Tale Flipper needn't worry.
The Greatest Movie Ever Sold Selling it like it is.
Albatross Of course you don't get bloody wafers with it!
    Retreat Deceptively ingenious...

The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn

Action-packed, gorgeous, and faithfully whimsical: Hergé thought Spielberg the only director capable of filming Tintin. He was onto something.
