This Week...
This week, I got to meet Martin Scorsese, so that's one ambition taken care of. Turns out that the veteran director and man behind this week's Hugo is as fiercely intelligent, fast-talking and generally fantastic as you've always been told - and he's clearly wildly enthused about his latest film. We also spoke to stars Sir Ben Kingsley, Asa Butterfield and Chloe Moretz, as well as producer Graham King, to bring you all the latest on the sort-of kids film and definite cinephile's option. Also this week, we've opened our Advent Calendars for the first time, which is always exciting, especially given that Phil nabbed a Lego Star Wars effort complete with Nute Gunray figure. Of course, Chris and James emptied their calendars by November 30, but that just means that Santa won't be bringing them anything this year. More for the rest of us!

    New John Carter Trailer Online
After some new pics and that fresh poster, the all-out publicity barrage for John Carter continued apace on Wednesday with the arrival of the second official trailer. The first promo was more about mood than plot, and while there's still not a lot of story on show here, there's at least a little more in terms of what Carter himself faces. And because we're getting closer to the movie's release date, there's more CG eye candy on display.

    More New Videos:

  • Wrong Quentin Dupieux Trailer Online The question is 'Why?'

  • A pair of Modern Warfare 3 Xbox controllers, far slicker than the standard black ones and with a transforming D-pad. We estimate that these little beauties will increase our kill/death ration by at least 50%. Sadly that will still leave us getting pwn'd by twelve-year-olds half the time.

    The Perfect Cinema Moment
You may be wondering who the heck this is and why I have hijacked the Empire blog. Well, my name is Sanam Jehanfard, and for my birthday (it was on Wednesday if anyone would like to send their belated wishes) my lovely friends here at Empire, the best movie magazine site in the world, have given me the opportunity to write a post for their prestigious blog [Ed: it was a moment of weakness!]. How amazing is that!? About anything I want.

The A To Z Of Martin Scorsese
Not just a great filmmaker but a great film lover, Martin Scorsese is back in cinemas this month with family 3D adventure Hugo - as well as his rereleased concert flick, The Last Waltz. There's also a print of The Life And Death Of Colonel Blimp coming soon, freshly spruced by the Film Foundation. To celebrate this triple treat, we've compiled a Martypedia - an A-Z of the great man's career from Who's That Knocking at My Door to Hugo...

Jameson Empire Awards 2012: Vote Now!
It's the most irreverent awards night on the celluloid calendar — and we need you to help decide the winners. The choice is yours - and we don't envy you the task, for it's been a hell of a year. The competition is open to any film that was released between January 22, 2011 and January 20, 2012, which means that the late-blooming likes of Michel Hazanavicius' The Artist, Steve McQueen's Shame and Steven Spielberg's War Horse are all in contention.

Hugo Interviews: Martin Scorsese And Co. Talk 3D
Martin Scorsese's Hugo may be his first film in 3D but it's an effort that celebrates the whole of cinema history as it tells the story of young orphan Hugo Cabret (Asa Butterfield), who lives in the walls of a Paris police station and tries to keep the clocks wound up. His story begins when he comes into contact with an old toymaker in the station (Sir Ben Kingsley) and his god-daughter (Chloe Moretz). We spoke to Scorsese, Butterfield, Kingsley, Moretz and producer Graham King to learn more...

Aardman Set Visit: Pirates! In An Adventure With Scientists
With Aardman's new slice of stop-motion magic, Pirates! In An Adventure With Scientists, swashing its buckle in our cinemas next year, Empire took the opportunity to head down to Bristol for a look at the production and a chat with director Peter Lord. The Bristol-born filmmaker is one of the studio's founding fathers - creator of Morph (not to mention devious nemesis Chas) and the man behind Chicken Run. This time he's partnered with Sony Pictures to deliver an adventuresome adaptation of Gideon Defoe's seafaring tales. Move over Captain Jack, here comes Pirate Captain...

David Weissman Talks We Were Here
It's 30 years since AIDS was first diagnosed. At that point, almost half the gay men in San Francisco were infected. Director David Weissman lived through and survived the epidemic, and has now chronicled the experiences of San Francisco's gay community in his Oscar-longlisted documentary We Were Here. He tells Empire how he first heard about AIDS, the impact it had on himself and his friends, what the epidemic did for gay rights in America, and what made him make the film...

    We Are Macmillan

Sir Ben Kingsley is very good at fixing things.

Stephen Merchant's GCSE drama play dealt with ISSUES.

Alan Moore does not have internet access.

The Maltese Falcon is based on a real thing. The Knights of St John really did give falcons to visiting dignitaries. They just weren't usually gold.

There used to be a criminal offence of "mopery" in the US, defined as "walking down the street with no clear destination or purpose". Police used to use it to target mobsters.

Tom Hiddleston does Owen Wilson. Ugly Renaissance babies. Interior design inspired by... Ryan Gosling outfits? Er, OK. Awesome paper sculptures.

Handily, the perfect counterpart to the CoD controllers - The FPS Freek CQC from Kontrol Freek. Ideal for improving your Call of Duty accuracy without giving you gamer's thumb. Bring it!

    Hugo

It may be too rarefied for kids raised on rapping penguins and Chipmunks sequels, but offers excitement and enchantment in equal measure and is likely to become a lasting favourite. Scorsese is film historian enough to recreate early cinema in perfect detail, but Hugo's plot is set in motion by a heart-shaped key. This is a great director's greatest love story.

Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows: Part 2
