This Week...
Welcome to 2012! Now, we know what you're thinking. You wish you were still home on the sofa, eating your mum's famous roast potatoes / mince pies / boiled sprouts. Or maybe you're wondering why it's 2012 and we still haven't had one space odyssey, never mind two, and there's no sign of self-lacing trainers or production news on Jaws 19. But remember the good things in life! Skynet remains blissfully un-self-aware; the Olympics are coming, which means that there'll be a two-week period when everyone is home watching TV and you can get the good seats in the cinema, and we're all getting an extra Bank Holiday because of something to do with our archaic system of government. Oh, and there're all sorts of new goodies on Empire for you to enjoy, from a webchat with Goon star Seann William Scott to a fierce debate about the new Sherlock in the blog section. Roll on the best year ever!

    Benedict Cumberbatch reveals tidbit?

    Jackie Chan's 1911: Revolution Trailer
Few would dispute Jackie Chan's status as a living legend. When it comes to commitment to his craft, none can match the man who's broken nearly every bone in his body in pursuit of great action cinema, and who has delivered some of the most entertaining films of the last few decades. And now he's made his 100th film, 1911: Revolution, and we have an exclusive look at it here.

    My Problems With Sherlock
What I'm offering up here is a bubble-bursting exercise. I'm not saying A Scandal In Belgravia isn't great, but there are cracks in its apparently perfect veneer. Some will accuse me of over-analysing things, but I feel Messrs Moffat and Gatiss know that's par for the course with something so inherently analytical in of itself.

    The Big 2012 Movie Preview
Here it is: a comprehensive, exhaustive and exhausting look at all the big and small movies headed our way in 2012. From the biggest blockbuster and most Oscar-baiting dramas to the small films that just might blow us away, we've gathered them all here - and, for your convenience, assembled them in an easy-to-scan format broken down into categories that will give you some idea of next year's trends and stars. Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to 2012...

Vote For The Sexiest Movie Characters
To brighten up the dark, dank January days post-Christmas, we thought we'd move your mind to happier topics. Instead of dwelling on your wet feet, windblown hair or frozen fingertips, take a moment to consider the hottest film characters of all time. Not film stars - we did that already - but characters. So Angelina Jolie and George Clooney are not eligible, but Lara Croft or Danny Ocean would be. So get your thinking caps on and get voting; we'll tot up the results once you've all had the chance to have your say. Is it all about Wolverine for you, or are you more of a Jessica Rabbit fan? Are you all about John McClane, or Casablanca's Rick Blaine, or Dr No's Honey Ryder, or is it Gilda who gets you hot under the collar?

    Seann William Scott Webchat Transcript
Though he'll forever be known for his role as the semen-swilling Stifler in the American Pie franchise, Seann William Scott was in the office recently to talk about his latest film, Goon. Playing an extremely aggressive ice hockey player, plenty of questions asked involved punching people, but there were also queries on romancing the ladies, moonshine and the state of the Empire toilet. Of course.

    Benedict Cumberbatch On Sherlock's Return
Benedict Cumberbatch is a star on the rise - why, only this week he bagged a role in JJ Abrams' Star Trek 2, and he also has a short but memorable part in movie-of-the-moment War Horse. But his signature performance remains one on the small screen, as Sherlock Holmes in the BBC's wildly successful TV serial. Empire met him on set in August 2010 to talk snazzy coats, mind-boggling monologues and his upcoming stint in Middle-earth.

    Martin Freeman Talks Sherlock
2011 saw Martin Freeman zipping back and forth between hemispheres as he worked alternate shifts on The Hobbit and the second series of Sherlock. Empire caught him on Sherlock's Cardiff set in early August - fortunately neither Smaug the dragon nor Moriarty were around - and sat him down in the BBC canteen to find out what's changed on Baker Street.

Phyllida Lloyd Talks The Iron Lady
The Iron Lady stars serial Oscar-nabber Meryl Streep as Maggie Thatcher, thinking back on her life as she tries to deal with the passing of her husband, Denis (Jim Broadbent). Spanning the extremely controversial life and times of Britain's only female Prime Minister, it's a film with plenty of talking points, to say the least - though according to director Phyllida Lloyd, the overtly political members of the audience won't necessarily enjoy it...

    Arrietty Director Hiromasa Yonebayashi Speaks!
Arrietty, the latest film from Japan's legendary Studio Ghibli, adapts the story of The Borrowers in the studio's unique style. Ahead of its DVD release on January 9, we talked to director Hiromasa Yonebayashi to ask about taking the reins of the Hayao Miyazaki-scripted film, the challenges of building the Borrowers' world and how he made a normal house seem so enormous...

Porn And Politics: Empire Meets Abi Morgan
Few writers can have managed such a peculiar combo: an explicit sex addiction drama and prestige political biopic opening within a week. Viewers who gravitate to Shame probably won't naturally fall for The Iron Lady - though both films deal to a degree with loneliness and loss. In Shame, thirtysomething New Yorker Brandon (Michael Fassbender) is crippled by sexual addiction, with pornography and prostitutes his only connections to the world. His life is upended when his sister, Sissy (Carey Mulligan) re-enters it, with all her emotional mess. In The Iron Lady, former prime minister Margaret Thatcher (Meryl Streep) is struggling with old age, remembering her time in power with both pride and regret. Her sadness is that she is alone, with only the memory of her late husband (Jim Broadbent) for company. Empire spoke with screenwriter Abi Morgan about scripting sex, depicting power and the perils and pleasure of the internet...

Vote For Your Favourite Films And Stars Of 2011
It's the most irreverent awards night on the celluloid calendar - and we need you to help decide the winners. The choice is yours - and we don't envy you the task, for it's been a hell of a year. The competition is open to any film that was released between January 22, 2011 and January 20, 2012, which means that the late-blooming likes of Michel Hazanavicius' The Artist, Steve McQueen's Shame and Steven Spielberg's War Horse are all in contention.

    Done In 60 Seconds Competition
The 2012 Jameson Empire Awards Done in 60 Seconds has arrived! To take part in this year's competition and be in with a chance of winning a Jameson Empire Award and attending the star-studded and glittering Jameson Empire Awards ceremony in March 2012, grab some mates and blag a camera from somewhere and get shooting. To 60 seconds and not beyond!

Review Of 2011: Films Of The Year
About a month ago, Empire's writers and contributors were given their most difficult task of the year: to choose their top films of 2011. How to measure up the likes of Fast Five against, say, The King's Speech? How to remember whether True Grit qualified as this year or last year? But we finally pulled it together, forced ourselves to focus and came up with this, a testament to the very best films of 2011. Read on, see what you think, and give us your thoughts on this year's best films in the comments below...

Review Of 2011: Music Playlist Of The Year
It's been a heck of year for music and the movies. There's been terrific soundtracks (Drive, Hanna, Arrietty), earlobe-tickling TV scores (Game Of Thrones, Breaking Bad), and then, just when it couldn't get a whole lot better, David Lynch weighed in with a debut studio album that turned the Empire office hi-fi into a deer. Happy times. To celebrate we shook our iPods until this playlist for 2011 fell out.

    Review Of 2011: Best Trailers
The polls have been completed, the votes are in and the tallies are, um, tallied as Empire takes a look back at the year in trailers and picks the truly terrific from the bafflingly awful. Here's a pantheon of promos that pushed our buttons in 2011.

    Review Of 2011: Best Posters
There are cases where the poster is better than the film it promotes - and others where it at least equals the result. So we thought we'd salute those posters that appeared this year as part of our round-up of, and farewell to, 2011. You can read about the best films of the year and the best trailers, but right now it's all about the design geniuses who brought us the slices of eye-candy below...

Review Of 2011: Hollywood's Review Of The Year
Empire recently revealed our top 20 films of the year - insert furious forum comment here - but we couldn't let 2011 end without polling some of the biz's biggest names for their top pick. Get clicking to find out what blew Robin Williams away, which teen heartthrob chose a gynecological horror, and who believes Anonymous is the year's greatest masterpiece.

Getting only two Maltesers in your "fun" sized bag is no fun at all.

    English pronunciation is hard!

Teachers / This Life / The Walking Dead's Andrew Lincoln was actually born Andrew James Clutterbuck.

Seann William Scott gets spooked by life-size cut-outs of Edward Cullen.

Clint Eastwood has befriended a squirrel that lives near his production offices. But hey, he already hung out with a tree-dwelling furry forest creature in Every Which Way But Loose years back, so we're not sure why everyone's surprised.
