 | This Week... This has been a very exciting week in the Empire office. On Tuesday, this year's BAFTA nominations were announced, leading to our traditional flurry of discussion and debate (Carey Mulligan for Drive rather than Shame? No Olivia Colman?) as awards season really kicks off. From now until the end of February, anyone who's anyone will be walking solely on red carpet in fancy duds, eating only canapés (and very few of those, given the tightness of the aforementioned fancy duds) and drinking enough champagne to float the Titanic - or, more impressively, to float every DVD copy of Titanic ever sold. And even the BAFTAs news paled at the end of the week when we learned that Nicolas Cage will be visiting the Empire offices next Thursday at 2.30pm to take part in one of our famed webchats. Nicolas Freakin' Cage, ladies and gentlemen! It's so momentous that Chris is even tidying his desk. Helen O'Hara Deputy Editor, Empire | | |

 | | | | | Sherlock: The Reichenbach Fall It returned to our screens a mere three weeks ago, but that's it for season two of the Beeb's utterly-brilliant Sherlock. Mirroring the superlative first season, the second began with a dizzying, Moffat-written opener, dipped slightly in the middle with a self-contained mystery and finished with a tantalising, event-packed finale which will have us formulating theories in our mental palaces until next year. Although for all the high-functioning sociopaths reading the following should be obvious, it goes without saying that this article will contain spoilers... | | | |

| | | The Life And Death Of Last Action Hero Die Hard's director. Lethal Weapon's writer. And The Terminator himself. Last Action Hero should have been bulletproof. Instead, it brought a studio to its knees, sent its cast and crew insane and proved, really quite conclusively, that some movies are not... too big to fail. |
| | | Babysitting: The Most Dangerous Profession In The World? The Sitter is out this week, reinforcing a lesson that Hollywood has long been trying to teach us: looking after kids is slightly more dangerous than juggling primed grenades. It's a wonder any movie-goer babysits at all, with the following examples proving that children will, when they feel like it, disappear into the ether, electrocute you and/or erupt into balls of fire. So this one's for all you nannies out there - you are brave, brave people, and we salute you. |
| | | Leonardo DiCaprio: A Viewer's Guide Leonardo DiCaprio burst onto our screens back in the mid '90s with the charm of a thousand Tony Bennetts, hair as golden as the first rays of the sun and a face so handsome it must have had God working weekends. Yes, we hated him. The jealousy soon wore off, though, and our appreciation grew for an actor who keeps his stardom subordinate to whatever material he was working on. He's shown an unerring eye both for challenging scripts and great directors - most recently, J. Edgar and a first collaboration with Clint Eastwood - and has even found time to raise awareness about global warming and be a friend to small animals. Unlike many actors, it's hard to find a single turkey on his resume. If there was one, he'd probably take it home and hand-rear it with the help of one of his ridiculously hot girlfriends. Huh. Maybe we hate him after all... |
| | | Help! My Star Is A Complete Unknown Haywire hits cinemas this week, starring the kickass and extraordinarily cool Gina Carano as a CIA-trained, independent contractor who goes on the run and starts opening up huge barrels of whoop-ass after someone, somewhere marks her for death. It's directed by Steven Soderbergh and co-stars a host of famous faces – but the fact remains that Carano herself isn't well known outside mixed martial arts (MMA) and stunt circles. So how do filmmakers entice audiences in to see newcomers like this given a chance? We examine a few previous successful strategies... |
| | | Mark Neveldine Talks Ghost Rider: Spirit Of Vengeance Mark Neveldine is one half of the directorial partnership that is Neveldine/Taylor, rollerskating alongside fellow action addict Brian Taylor. The pair of them are behind the second coming of Nic Cage as Johnny Blaze, Ghost Rider: Spirit Of Vengeance, out on February 17. Speaking to him about the upcoming sort-of-sequel, Empire also talked about the chances of Crank 3 coming to pass. Intrigued? We're not surprised... |
| | | Back-And-Forth: The BAFTA Nominations Well, here are the BAFTA nominations for another year. It's like another Christmas for film fans, albeit one with slightly underwhelming presents and that sick and guilty sensation that you get after eating too many chocolate coins. The Artist is out in front - which I'm OK with - followed by Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy (benefitting from British double-dipping; it's eligible for more categories) | | | |

 | | | | | The Guard Among the most purely entertaining films of the year, which cuts its laughter with a dose of Celtic melancholy. It still delivers cop/action requirements - shoot-outs, revenges, daring deeds - and chances are, we'll be quoting lines from this forever. | | | | Also Out | | |
