 | This Week... Our mind was on all things sweet this week. For one, we're still finishing off the last of the Easter chocolate and celebrating some office birthdays with copious amounts of cake. But more importantly, we turned our attentions to the thorny question of the best cinema sweets. Our Phil trawled the cinemas of London to capture and identify all the lines available and assess them for taste, appearance and awesomeness, while Amar and Marco made them all look their best. As if that weren't enough, we talked to the also-sweet Olga Kurylenko about the end of the world and Tom Cruise for her new film Oblivion, and director Joseph Kosinski about the movies that inspire him. And then we had Ali dress up as Ryan Gosling, because what could be cuter than a man in a fright wig? Well, as it turns out quite a lot, but at least we tried. | | | | | The Gourmet Guide To Pick 'N' Mix In 1933 André Michelin and his brother Édouard created the Michelin star system to sort the deliciously gastrofied wheat of the world's kitchens from the icky, overcooked chaff. Empire, no stranger itself to dishing out a star or two, has decided that the time is ripe to cast an aesthetic eye over the sweetest things in cinema this side of Jack-Jack Incredible. With your help, we will find the single greatest piece of pick 'n' mix in multiplex history and bestow upon it the prestigious 'Gummy' award. Get busy reading, then get busy voting. | |
| | | The Empire Podcast #56 Aaron Eckhart talks The Dark Knight, pitching songs to superstars and Olympus Has Fallen. Sylvester McCoy talks acting with stuffed hedgehogs, The Doctor and having conversations with flowers, all in honour of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey's DVD/Blu-Ray release. In the non-interview portion of the podcast, we discuss rocket deaths - don't ask - as well as Oblivion, The Place Beyond The Pines and much, much more. |
| | | Olga Kurylenko Talks Oblivion When we left her in Quantum Of Solace, Olga Kurylenko was wandering around the Atacama Desert in her stockinged feet. Well, the good news is that not only has she found shoes but she's also picked up a range of fascinating role in To The Wonder, Seven Psychopaths and now sci-fi spectacular Oblivion opposite Tom Cruise. She told us about flying co-pilot to Maverick, the key to a good on-screen chunder and snoozing in a Delta-sleep space coffin. |
| | | Joseph Kosinski: My Movie Life Joseph 'Tron Legacy' Kosinski is a coming force in Hollywood. Oblivion is his latest, a science-fiction opus that puts the future of humanity into the hands of Maverick from Top Gun with typically deranged consequences. In person, he has the smart bearing of a successful tech entrepreneur - more Silicon Valley as Sunset Boulevard - and a easygoing demeanour. Empire took advantage of the latter to put him through the movie-based interrogation we call 'My Movie Life'. |
| | | Elysium Trailer Secrets Revealed The trailer for Neill Blomkamp's follow-up to 2009's District 9, Elysium, arrived this week, accompanied by a poster and a flurry of stills . In the teaser, the world got its first chance to see how he's taken Matt Damon, Jodie Foster and Wikus van der Merwe himself, Sharlto Copley, to the end of the world as we know it. Here below, with exclusive quotes from Blomkamp himself, we guide you through the secrets of 2154 AD. |
| | | The Hobbit's Baddie Talks! Kiwi actor Manu Bennett has appeared in movies including 30 Days Of Night, Lantana and The Marine, but his most high-profile work to date has been in Starz' Spartacus series, as ludicrously chiselled slave Crixus. The performance caught Peter Jackson's eye, leading him to cast Bennett as the dwarf-bothering Pale Orc in the Hobbit trilogy. Now, with The Hobbit out on Blu-ray and DVD this week, he talks Azog's defiling past and reveals the name of his pet warg... |
| | | Five Steps To Creating The Ultimate Movie Monster His name may not be as instantly recognisable as SFX peers like Rob Bottin and Rick Baker but, rest assured, Neville Page will soon be a household name - especially if, like us, you live in a house filled with monster memorabilia. He's been J.J. Abrams' designer since Star Trek. He was creature creator on Super 8, worked on Falling Skies and Star Trek Into Darkness, and is a possible pick to follow in the footsteps of Stuart Freeborn, Ralph McQuarrie, Bottin and Baker and help put flesh on the bones of Star Wars' creature-filled galaxy. "I've no idea if that will be my next job," he laughed, "I'm hopeful!" Empire's Owen 'The Wereman' Williams cornered the man in his underground lair (okay, studio) to get his key steps to creating the ultimate movie monster. |

 | | | | | The Place Beyond The Pines In trying to tell an enormous amount of story it can spread itself too thin and leave some strands feeling unfinished, but when it's at its best, this is beautiful and bold filmmaking. | | | | Also Out | | | This week's video trailers and clips. | | | | | The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey It may deal in part with a (literal) phantom menace, but this is thankfully not The Phantom Menace. The Hobbit plays younger and lighter than Fellowship and its follow-ups, but does right by the faithful and has a strength in Martin Freeman's Bilbo that may yet see this trilogy measure up to the last one. There is treasure here. | | | | Also Out | | |
