In Alan Partridge: Alpha Papa, the eponymous DJ asks "Which is the worst monger? Fish, iron, rumour or war?". You're faced with a similarly tricky conundrum this week: should you go see the movie with the radio disc jockey in a hostage crisis, the one with the horse in a tree or the one with the Cyclops in a fairground? To help you choose we have interviews with the cast and crew of all three, as well as a guide to geeky movie T-shirts, a breakdown of the Thor sequel's new trailer and a look at this summer's blockbuster plots, distilled to their essence. If you're planning to see Grown-Ups 2, however, we can't help you. It's possible that no-one can.

Full-Length Thor: The Dark World Trailer Online
A new trailer for Thor: The Dark World has appeared online, despite the fact that this is Odin's Day and not - as has become traditional for this film - Thor's Day. But don't worry: the Thunder God is very much present and correct, standing up to defend the world against a tide of darkness that threatens "the very fabric of reality".

100 Movie T-Shirts You Should Own
Let's face it: there is a geek uniform. You recognise your fellow film enthusiast by their T-shirt, which references a film in a way that is obscure, clever, beautifully designed or - for preference - all three. Once you spot the T-shirt you can proceed to the secret geek handshake, find out where you both stand on Wars vs. Trek and either declare a blood-feud or become best buddies. And since we all wear a lot of these around the office, we thought we'd seek out the very best geeky film T-shirts and assemble them for your perusal...

Podcast 73: Armando Iannucci And Anthony Stewart Head
Though he's busier than central Norwich on market day, Armando Iannucci (of On The Hour, The Day Today, The Thick Of It, In The Loop, Time Trumpet, Veep and now Alan Partridge: Alpha Papa fame) found time in his hectic schedule to drop by the Empire Podcast booth for a natter about Hitler, sneaking into US government buildings and perfecting the ultimate Alan whine. Elsewhere, the silver-tongued Anthony Stewart Head is grilled by our own Buffy buffs about his latest, Percy Jackson: Sea Of Monsters, touching on everything from 'squirrel pants' to putting ice cubes in your mouth before you kiss someone. On top of all that, there's a whole load of very important movie news this week - Inbetweeners 2! Expendables 3! Films that aren't sequels! - for you to catch up on, as well as a look forward to Toronto and Venice, plus our review of the critically-contentious blockbuster The Lone Ranger.

Mitch Hurwitz Arrested Development Empire Podcast Special
Mitch Hurwitz is the worryingly funny writer-cum-director-cum-showrunner behind Arrested Development, the cult classic sitcom that enjoyed just two and a half seasons between 2003-2006, only to come back from the dead this year thanks to its legions of fans and a little streaming service called Netflix. In this very special Empire Podcast, the comedy genius behind Pop Pop, Franklin The Puppet, Wee Britain and much more talks all about Season 4, as well as what we can expect from the Arrested Development movie. In other words, if you know your Annyong from your 'Annyong!' and/or regularly shout 'STEVE HOLT!' in the street for no particular reason, get downloading this podcast, and get downloading it quick.

    20 Of Cinema's Best Train-Based Fight Scenes
As fast and exciting and sexy and shiny as cars are , it's difficult to have a lengthy fight scene on top of them, and that's no good. Thank goodness trains are here to plug the gap, offering the speed and (relative) space required for a good punch-up, be it on the roof or inside one of its carriages. Two films released in 2013 have played around with the cinematic trope of train-based pain, and in honour of both The Wolverine and The Lone Ranger, here is a collection of some of the best train fights ever committed to celluloid.

Infographic: This Summer's Blockbusters, By Theme
Empire has now seen pretty much all of this summer's big films, and what struck us about them were certain common themes that returned time and time again. When we boiled it down, it looks like all the blockbusters of the season have certain themes in common - but beware some spoilers as we lay it all out. And yes, we're prepared to defend these interpretations in the comments, so bring it on.

    Steve Coogan Talks Alan Partridge
As Alan Partridge struts into multiplexes with his big-screen debut, we met up in London with the Alpha Papa himself, Steve Coogan, to talk about his 20-plus years playing the character. Read on to learn why Partridge is like The Rolling Stones, which item of Alan-wear Coogan has in his closet, and which Hollywood stars are devotees of the Toblerone Lord...

    Bill Oddie Talks Alan Partridge
"Had a long chat with Bill Oddie. An experienced birder, he's lent me his binoculars and given me some great advice on how to remain still for long periods of time..." This quote, a passage from Partridge autobiography We Need To Talk About Alan, is just one of many, many references the character makes to the former Goodie. We rang Oddie up to ask how he feels about being part of the Partridgeverse.

Thor: The Dark World Second Trailer Breakdown
We already broke down the teaser trailer for Thor: The Dark World, but with today's full trailer for the film it was clear that there's lots left to talk about. This time, however, we enlisted the cast and crew of the film to shed some light on it, and here are a few tidbits that they were willing to share about what's in store for the Norse sequel...

Empire Presents the New York Film Academy

The Lone Ranger Interviews: Johnny Depp, Gore Verbinski, Armie Hammer & More
Given that it's a reunion of the producer, star and director of the Pirates Of The Caribbean movies, you'd expect big characters, massive stunts and a healthy dose of weird from this new big-screen adventure for the legendary ranger - and you'd be right. We travelled (by stagecoach, naturally) to Santa Fe to speak to Johnny Depp, Armie Hammer, Ruth Wilson, William Fichtner, Gore Verbinski and Jerry Bruckheimer about the film, horse-riding and the wild, wild West...

Percy Jackson: Sea Of Monsters Interviews: Logan Lerman, Alexandra Daddario & Thor Freudenthal
The new Percy Jackson film is lighter on the Greek gods than last time - no Zeus, Poseidon or Hades - but there's still plenty of adventure for demi-gods Percy (Logan Lerman) and Annabeth (Alexandra Daddario), as they're rejoined by Brandon T. Jackson's Grover and meet newcomer cyclops Tyson (Douglas Smith). We talked to the leading pair, and newcomer director Thor Freudenthal, recently to learn more about this return to the franchise...

    Empire Meets Richard Sherman
Richard Sherman is one half of the legendary Sherman brothers, the sibling songwriters who penned the music to Disney films of the calibre of Mary Poppins, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and The Aristocats. Sadly his brother Robert died last year, but Richard was in fine fettle when we caught up with him in LA recently to mark The Jungle Book's release in full 1080p glory. He even sang us a couple of his ditties...

Last Chance To Vote: Who Are The Sexiest Movie Stars of All Time?
Hot or not: that's the question we want you to answer as we determine who are the sexiest stars in Hollywood right now. Is Megan Fox still a mega-fox? Does Bradley Cooper really surpass Ryan Gosling? Who goes to sleep at night humming Sexy And I Know It? We want you to choose five actors and actresses. You can vote for all men, all women or some combination thereof; it's entirely up to you.

Updated: 41 Astonishing Movie Star Music Video Cameos
It's fair to say that the pop world has had better luck in Tinseltown than Hollywood's finest have had bashing out chart-topping ditties. Need proof? Just hit play on Steven Seagal's ear-burning Songs From The Crystal Cave, try to lay your hands on Bruce Willis' The Return Of Bruno or listen to just anything by Russell Crowe's 30 Odd Foot Of Grunt. Of course, there are minor exceptions - Scarlett and Zooey, take a bow - but as a rule, actors' musical ambitions are served best with sparkling cameos in music videos. There they can wow us without being allowed anywhere near an instrument. Of course, there are too many examples to list them all, but here are a few we love - and a few almost too terrible to mention.

Cinema's Greatest Effects Shots Picked By Hollywood's Top VFX Specialists
From Eadweard Muybridge and George Méliès to James Cameron and Phil Tippett, the history of movie effects is basically the greatest bedtime story never told. Except it's a yarn so full of dragons, dinosaurs and mimetic polyalloy killing machines sent back from the future that you'd never get any sleep after hearing it. As Life Of Pi and Avatar amply demonstrate, there are many chapters still to be written and innovations still to be forged, but whether in-camera, matte, prosthetic, CG, or just lovingly modelled by a man with a passion for Plasticine, effects have brought magic to the movies since the silent era. In a unique celebration of the art, Empire asked the people who make them happen to pick their favourites.

Everything we need to become meth dealers in the style of Breaking Bad's Walter White (or should we say Heisenberg?), as the final stretch of episodes start to air on Netflix.

Mark Wahlberg is still on Detroit time.

    Bryan Cranston can roller-dance.

Idris Elba really wants to be in The Inbetweeners sequel.

Anthony Head referred to his costume for Percy Jackson: Sea Of Monsters as "squirrel bottoms".

It's possible to review Fringe shows with cats. We're all out of a job.

An entire site devoted to Peter Capaldi's hair. Baby elephant in a paddling pool. Doctor Who, as a Tube map. You might remember me from...Troy McClure movie posters.

If you have any timewasters to share, then e-mail them in to us.

Apparently our Phil has gone missing, according to this Dark Skies poster. Hopefully by the time we've eaten the accompanying chocolate ear and watched the DVD (out now), he'll turn up again.
