 | To the many thousands of people who got their A-level results yesterday, congratulations, commiserations or both. Even if you did less well than hoped, take heart. We've never seen a single film where a radioactive animal asked about someone's exam results before biting them and giving them super-powers - and besides, a look at our Movie Flops That Weren't feature shows that even when the outlook seems bleak, you can still pull it out of the bag in the end. As for the rest of us who aren't so disgustingly young and fresh-faced, there's the comfort of knowing that Ron Burgundy is publishing his autobiography in November, which we're sure will be full of important life lessons and (hopefully) some tips on getting salon-quality hair. And as if that weren't good news enough, John Cleese is on this week's podcast talking about lemurs. If there is a human being anywhere out there who's cheered neither by members of Monty Python or lemurs, we've never met them and are not sure we want to. This does contain a spoiler for one character, so please beware if you haven't seen the film at all, but if you know what you're in for then enjoy this rather amusing clip. Ten Successful Movies You Thought Were Flops After flicking gloomily through The Lone Ranger's US box office receipts, a task that would have taken as long as several seconds, Johnny Depp and Jerry Bruckheimer had some choice things to say about the negative press their film has received. Rather than blaming the film's toxic reviews, we think the trio should be looking elsewhere to explain their turkey. As the following releases show, a surprising number of plucky blockbusters and savvy sleepers have waded through toxic press, caustic reviews and the general odour of failure to emerge into the golden kingdom of Ka-ching... | |
| | | The Empire Podcast 74: John Cleese And Jeff Wadlow Interviews On top of a chat with the comedy hero that is John Cleese, this week's bumper-sized podcast is packed with film goodness. The team discuss comedy sketches that deserve a chance on the big screen, further casting announcements from the Expendables 3 camp, Twitter users you should follow, Elysium, Kick-Ass 2, 2 Guns, Planes and the greatest character introductions in cinema history. We also interview Kick-Ass 2 director Jeff Wadlow and bring you some of the finest useless facts ever to grace a podcast. |
| | | Rogues Gallery: Walton Goggins Walton Goggins is a character actor adept at juggling danger and humour in equal measure. It's a useful skill for playing white-trash career criminal Boyd Crowder in Justified, a role he's inhabited since the first episode and will be seeing through to the end. With a couple of years to go before that conclusion, however, Season 4 is just out on DVD in the UK, and to celebrate, we chatted to Walton about Boyd and some of his other roguish roles. |
| | | Words Over Faces: The Continuing Movie Poster Trend Two years ago, there was a spate of posters featuring Words Over Faces on our country's street furniture, no better highlighted than by The Adjustment Bureau's triple whammy of BIG LETTERS over BIG FACES. Now, with the arrival of Neill Blomkamp's Elysium and the final season of Breaking Bad (and more), it appears that the poster design trope is back with a vengeance, and here below is our celebration - of a sort - of how good people look when they're hiding behind sans-serif fonts. |

| | | Win Tickets To A Preview Screening Of Critically-Acclaimed Horror You're Next A lively reunion is abruptly brought to an end when a gang of mysterious killers, disguised in animal masks, wage an all-out assault on the Davison's secluded home. Using a series of sophisticated traps, axes, crossbows and machetes, the family are slaughtered one by one until nowhere is safe. But neither the attackers, nor their victims, have counted on Erin (Sharni Vinson); an innocent girlfriend who has the killer instinct to fight back... | The nice people from Pot Noodle brought us a Pot Noodle pudding. Kick-Ass 2 A more modest success than the first Kick-Ass, but still of-a-piece with its scurrilous predecessor. Nobody flies a jet-pack up a skyscraper this time, but Kick-Ass 2 still has its share of over-the-top action, and the sweary laughs are just about intact. Also Out The Place Beyond The Pines In trying to tell an enormous amount of story it can spread itself too thin and leave some strands feeling unfinished, but when it's at its best, this is beautiful and bold filmmaking.
