You could have knocked us over with a Quick-Quotes Quill on Thursday when J.K. Rowling announced that she is writing the script to a new story set in the wizarding world of Harry Potter (not the theme park; the other one). It's based around her compendium of Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them, and set in New York about 70 years before Harry Potter's time. Frankly we're rather excited at the whole prospect if only for the sight of wizards in flapper dresses, but let us know what you think in our poll on the matter here. Elsewhere, we braved the wrath of the angriest police chiefs around, profiled the most OTT TV DVD box sets, assembled an eye-wateringly gorgeous selection of Marvel concept art and quizzed the stars of Rush on Formula 1.

The Homefront Trailer Is Here
Given how he likes to turn his hand to anything - writing, directing, acting, studying, poetry, art and so on - it was only a matter of time before James Franco turned Heisenberg. Well, he's no Bryan Cranston, but he is playing a Southern-fried meth kingpin in the new Jason Statham film Homefront, which has just posted a trailer online.

Nick hadn't realised the trick to leaving the water filter running in the Empire office. Oh, the crazy lives we lead.

    Toronto 2013
Our Damon Wise is at the Toronto International Film Festival this year, and just like a Mountie always gets his man, Damo always gets his films. So check out his Toronto updates for the first reactions to 12 Years A Slave, The Fifth Estate, Dallas Buyers Club and many more...

50 Stunning Pieces Of Marvel Concept Art (And How They Compare To The Movie)
From Spider-Man to The Avengers, films based on Marvel comics have often dazzled us with their crazy visuals and interesting character design - whether it's been faithful to the comics or something entirely different. As Thor: The Dark World approaches release, we thought we'd look at the very best concept art for the Marvel universe...

Chris Hemsworth And Daniel Brühl Take Our Rush Quiz
On-screen rivalry is all well and good - and with co-stars Chris Hemsworth and Daniel Brühl on top form, Rush is both of those things - but how well would they get on when we sprung one of our surprise quizzes on them, miles from the nearest racetrack? Could Hemsworth tackle tough questions about his on-screen rival, and would Brühl buckle in the face of a random James-Hunt-based interrogation? Ladies and gentleman, start your quizzing...

The Most Ludicrous DVD/Blu-ray Box Sets Ever: The TV Edition
In the beginning, there was Film's Most Ludicrous DVD/Blu-ray Box Sets Ever, but now it's the small screen's turn, all in honour of the joyfully preposterous Breaking Bad barrel (see below). Compiling 25 of our favourite overelaborate disc-housers in one handy place, the following list is a treasure trove of nigh-on unbelievable fan service, and one that may see you reaching for your credit card on more than a few occasions. Top tip: log out of Paypal before you get started...

30 Movie Police Chiefs More Furious Than You Can Possibly Imagine
Everyone knows that police chiefs are the shoutiest, angriest men of the movie world. Relentlessly sweaty, perpetually on the verge of a major cardiac incident and never more than a minute from their next cup of joe (black, three sugars, goddamnit), they deserve sympathy and support. What they get instead is an array of rulebook-burning, shoot-first-find-out-who-they're-shooting-at-later maverick detectives and cowboy cops hell-bent on driving them into an early retirement and / or the grave. Here are a few of our favourite scarlet-faced precinct warriors...

Remake Or Original: The Ultimate Movie Poster Face-Off
In our previous one-sheet one-upmanship championship, Remake Or Original: A Horror Poster Face-Off, it was just scary movies allowed into the arena. This time around, it's all-comers - as long as they're British or American remakes, that is. So that's "no" to Yojimbo and A Fistful Of Dollars and "sayonara" to the Insomnias, but "yes please" to Messrs. Deeds (and the 49 other pairings that made the list below). Your job: to take a good long look at each poster and let us know which is the best of the duo...

The Big Movie Quote Quiz Strikes Back!
It is a dark time for movie lovers. Although you may have conquered the previous quizzes, Empire's Big Movie Quote Quiz is back. You're going to need to establish a new base of movie knowledge to conquer all 90 of these quotes. The evil quizmasters of Empire, obsessed with finding new challenges for you, have dispatched thousands of remote probes into the far reaches of space and brought back some tough lines to identify.

50 Movie Supercars You Could Own (But Probably Can't Afford)
Fantasy movie cars are all very well - your Chitty Chitty Bang Bangs and your Benny the Cabs - but if you're a real movie enthusiast you probably want a film car you can actually own. Well, here's your lucky day! We've assembled 50 of the most ludicrously cool, ridiculously fast movie motors out there in one easy spot so you can plan your shopping list (once you win the lottery) and even highlighted the dangerous pitfalls to avoid in your ownership of each one...

We travelled down to Richard Curtis's Republic of Cornwall and came back with a parrot, some rum, some old bloke called 'Long John' and some fine ale from the St. Austell Brewery. We forgot the pasties.

Sigourney Weaver narrated Planet Earth for the Discovery Channel. When oh when will America learn that the right answer is always "Stick with David Attenborough"?

It is still possible to find your jaw dropping at really good cinema effects even in these jaded times.

There's a cuddly toy Dalek out this Christmas that says "Exterminate!" if you press a button. What if a child takes it to bed and rolls over in the middle of the night?!

Octopuses are colour-blind, but still capable of creating amazing camouflage.

This seems both awesome and extremely risky.

A supercut of final moments. Rejected film posters. OMG ARE YOU CRAZY GET DOWN. There's a man wandering around California with 3 mules.

If you have any timewasters to share, then e-mail them in to us.

A survival ration pack courtesy of A Hijacking, which is out now on DVD and Blu-ray. This is just the thing to keep us alive in the harsh conditions of the Empire office.

    Rush

It rarely deviates from formula, but Rush wins big, delivering the most exciting F1 footage created for film. Like Hunt, it is sexy, funny, full of thrills. Like Lauda, it is intelligent, a bit blunt, but ultimately touching.

    Also Out

White House Down The Wild West Wing.
    In A World... Vocal opponents.
The Artist And The Model Most a-musing.
    42 A genuine game changer.
    Borrowed Time Breaking and entering.
Insidious Chapter 2 The further and the furious.

    Iron Man 3

Black proves the perfect blacksmith, forging smart new tech and scenarios for the swaggering super-genius. If this does turn out to be Downey Jr.'s final solo outing, it's a very strong exit.

    Also Out

Plein Soleil A portrait of the con artist as a young man.
