 | Scott Pilgrim vs The Web There are webchats and then there are WEBCHATS and next Wednesday we'll be playing host to one of the latter. Director Edgar Wright and half the cast of the excellent Scott Pilgrim vs The World (Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Brandon Routh, Kieran Culkin, Ellen Wong and Satya Bhabha, to be precise) will be joining the team at chez Empire and sitting down to answer questions from you, the Empire readers. If you haven't read the comic, then do so as it's great; if you haven't booked your tickets for the film then do that too (also great, I've seen it twice). But most of all put 1pm on Wednesday 18th August in your diary and log on to chat with the gang directly. That said, if you're one of the lucky people to have tickets to Empire's Movie Con III, which starts tonight, you'll get to see Pilgrim on Sunday - along with many more besides, a host of big names and a plethora of exclusive footage from upcoming films. It's going to be epic! James Dyer Online Editor, Empire | | |

 | | | | | Two Countries Separated By A Common Language This is a blog about a really small but really irritating issue, so bring on the accusations of frivolity and mislaid priorities. I'd like to talk to you about Americanisms creeping into English usage in films, in particular in period pieces where such words make no sense. I first noticed it in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, and spotted a particularly egregious case recently in Tinkerbell and the Great Fairy Rescue* (out this week in, er, some good cinemas). Read more. | | | |

| | | 12 People Who Could Play Lisbeth Salander (But Probably Won't) With the identity of The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo's boot-tough and brilliant tech hacker Lisbeth Salander still under wraps, we've assembled a list of the possible contenders whose names may be jotted down on that David Fincher notepad - and one or two that probably aren't. With the movie's release set for December 21, 2011 and Sony yet to announce a name for the role that launched Noomi Rapace, here's a blow-by-blow on the runners and riders. |
| | | A Bluffer's Guide To Blaxploitation This week Black Dynamite dons his flared strides and some seriously outlandish suits to take it to the The Man - well, several men, all with guns. With Michael Jai White's urban hero lovably spoofing '70s blaxploitation classics, we've put together a handy guide to turn you cats into masters of the genre in ten superfly steps. |
| | | Drugs and the CIA: Hollywood's Bad Guy Dilemma Want to know what the worst thing ever to happen to Hollywood was? The advent of TV? The breakdown of the old studio system? The Scary Movie series? Nope: the fall of the Berlin Wall. The collapse of the "evil Empire" and the Communist threat left screenwriters, producers and directors having to really think about their bad guys for the first time ever. And as the threads of political correctness bind Hollywood ever-tighter, this summer suggests that there are only two acceptable groups of bad guys left, at least in straight-up action movies: drug lords and the CIA. |
| | | Dial-A-Foreigner: Stars Of Flexible Nationality Hollywood's attitude to non-English speakers is pretty even-handed - in the sense that Tinseltown seems to think that any one of a small number of actors can play any nationality on Earth. Whether they're playing arms traffickers, drug dealers, arms dealers with nasty coke habits, or the merely evil (Hollywood doesn't generally cast non-English speakers as the good guys), one of these fellas is bound to be in consideration. For your convenience, we've looked at the actors who make a career from playing away, a virtual casting couch of go-to guys to fill those hard-to-fill foreign roles… |
| | | Video: M. Night Shyamalan Interview His movie can bend air, water, fire and earth, but could M. Night Shyamalan deal with mindbending questions about his cartoon adaptation. Well, yes, as it happens. The pin-sharp and affable Philadelphian talked us through the Last Airbender's surprising influences and the finer points of that casting controversy. |
| | | Video: Nicolas Cage And The Sorcerer's Apprentice Cast And Crew Speaks The last time we saw The Sorcerer's Apprentice, he was Mickey Mouse and he was chasing a flurry of magical mops and buckets. These days, he's in the rather more human guise of Jay Baruchel, the young science student who's taken under the wing of Nicolas Cage's ancient magician. We travelled to Barcelona recently to talk to Cage, Baruchel, bad guy Alfred Molina, director Jon Turteltaub and producer Jerry Bruckheimer to get the scoop on the newest take on a very old story... |
| | | Anil Kapoor On Aisha, Bollywood and 24 Anil Kapoor was in town recently to promote his daughter Sonam's latest piece, Aisha, a rom-com based on none other than our very own Jane Austen's Emma, modernised and moved a few thousand miles east to India. So we took the opportunity to bend his ear over the internationalisation of Bollywood (as you do), the effect Slumdog's had on his life, and what movies a Bollywood newbie should really get around to watching one of these days. |
