 | This Week... Tonsorial challenges in the Empire office this week: we've all been teasing our hair (even James) to try to emulate our new style guru, Helena Bonham Carter, who massively impressed us at the Harry Potter junket with her Marie Antoinette-alike bouffant 'do. Also, she told us what we can expect from Bellatrix Lestrange in both this film and the last, but that's obviously less important than the hair. Elsewhere, we've solved your Christmas gift concerns with our fabulous (and only slightly geeky) gift guide, and brought you all the Potter features that are fit to print. Want to turn your next holiday in a Pott-tour? Wondering whether each film really is darker than the last? Look no further! And if Potter ain't your bag and you prefer large blue people, we've got Jon Landau talking about the future of Avatar. We're spoiling you, we really are – and it's not even Christmas yet. | | | | | The Day I Joined The Na'vi I'm crouched in the middle of Weta Digital's performance-capture stage (or 'volume') in Wellington, sporting a full motion-capture suit and trying my darnedest to channel my inner Andy Serkis. Acting is definitely not my forte and yet I'm about to perform a scene from Avatar in front of the man who produced it. Yikes. The scene is from Avatar's newly extended Collector's Edition and sees Na'vi Jake (that's me) exploring a long-abandoned Na'vi classroom, the scene of a brutal SecFor massacre in Pandora's recent past. There are stingbats dangling menacingly from the ceiling, violently overturned benches and bullet holes peppering the wall. I know this only because I've just watched the scene in Weta's 200-seat cinema, an opulent, Arabian Nights-style screening room just down the road at the effects house's post-production centre. | | | |

 | | | | | Empire's Christmas Gift Guide 2010 Did you know that there are less than 6 weeks worth of shopping days till Christmas? Did you know that horrendously well-organised people are already scooping up the best stuff out there? And of course you're probably still recovering from last year and wishing it was still June. But fear not! Empire is here to help, bringing you the coolest kit this Christmas for the discerning present buyer. After all, if you get good stuff for the people around you, they might get you good stuff in return. It's a double-whammy! | | |
| | | Video: Helena Bonham Carter Talks Harry Potter She's once again playing the "utterly anarchic" Bellatrix Lestrange in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part One, so we grabbed the opportunity to talk to the fabulous Helena Bonham Carter in London this week to get the lowdown on being so very good at being very bad. Here she is talking about the dangers posed to your neck when spellcasting, the dangers of duelling backwards on a table and that big duel in Part Two. WARNING: Spoilers for Deathly Hallows: Part Two follow. |
| | | Harry Potter: This One Is Darker "This one's definitely darker than the last" must be the most overused phrase when taking about Harry Potter movies - so we thought we'd take a scientific look at the series and assess how dark these films really are. Spoilers, obviously, follow, so if you haven't read the books, tread carefully… |
| | | Harry Potter And The Locations Of Filming If you're lucky enough to call Britain home, there's a world of Harry Potter locations out there right on your doorstep. Okay, not literally - you'd probably have noticed a group of house elves and a camera crew outside your front door - but you know what we mean. There are familiar landmarks, Muggle and magical, dotted across these fair islands, if ye know where to go. Platform 9 3/4, Hogwarts, Diagon Alley and Hogsmeade Station are just a few of the iconic locales used during the eight Potter films. Take our - wait for it - Harry Pott-tour and discover where to find them... |
| | | The Lost Plots Of Harry Potter The Harry Potter films have been remarkably faithful to their source books – to the extent that they're some of the longest family films around because they cram so much in. But a few things still had to fall by the wayside, so here are some of the most iconic scenes that were lost between the page and the films' theatrical release… |
| | | The Alternative Harry Potter Character Quiz Critics or die-hard fans can all agree on one thing -- J.K. Rowling can name a good supporting character. Though their appearance may only be a book (or in this case, a film) long, Harry, Hermione and Ron's support team are fantastically named: Dexter Fortescue, Astoria Greengrass, "Dangerous" Dai Llewellyn... the novels are chock-full of amazing also-rans. Your job today? Identify the the Potter person and type their name in the box -- easy! |
| | | Jon Landau Talks Avatar 2 The approachable ying to James Cameron's intense yang, Avatar producer Jon Landau has been a long-standing foil for his Lightstorm partner. Their sci-fi collaboration has taken an amp-suited fist to the record books. With two sequels already underway, we chatted to the producer about plans for the return to Pandora and the freshly added scenes on Avatar's Collector's Edition. | | | |

 | | | | | Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1 The first and third acts are over-busy; the middle one moves like an arthritic house-elf. Still, a decent smattering of magic moments and tension's pumped up sky-high. Bring on Part 2. | | | | Also Out | | | Watch Video This Week's Video Trailers And Clips Every week, our video player will update to show trailers and clips from the week's movie releases listed above. | | |
