 | This Week... The Empire office briefly became 1,000,000% tougher than normal when Dolph Lundgren dropped by for a webchat to promote The Expendables' DVD release. Luckily for us, he didn't punch anyone into the middle of next week or blow up the art desk with a tank grenade, and in fact remained charming (and really well-dressed) throughout. After that, we had the huge excitement of the first screenings and premiere of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part One. It's the beginning of the end for our boy wizard, so read the review here and check back next week for lots more coverage of the film. Helen O'Hara Deputy Online Editor, Empire | | |

 | | | | | Is Microsoft's Kinect really the future? "You are the controller!" scream the ads. "It'll change the way you interact with technology forever," claim the techies. But is Microsoft's Kinect really the future? Scratch that: four years after the Wii introduced motion-based gaming to the world (and not just the usual gaming world – this includes your nan), is it really going to make that much of a dent in an already saturated marketplace? | | | |

 | | | | | 12 Reasons Why LA Is The Most Terrifying City In The World John Carpenter had it right. LA is definitely a city to escape from – at least as far as the movies are concerned. And you don't have to be Snake Plissken to need a reason to head for the hills: this is basically the most dangerous place on Earth. If there were any rules – and there aren't – they'd probably read: if it moves, it'll run your over; if it walks, it'll rob you; and if it's an ex-policeman with a grudge, it'll try to blow up your bus. Like the bit at the back of The Lonely Planet that no-one really reads – only way more important – we've drawn up a list of 12 dangers, hidden, and in the case of new sci-fi Skyline, not-so-hidden, that lurk in the City of Angels. Here, in no particular order, are just some of the things that will kill you in Tinseltown. | | |
| | | In Praise Of... Cary Grant In the first of an occasional series of sycophantic respectful tributes to stars now no longer with us, we're looking at just what it was that made the superstars of yesteryear as great as they were… and continue to be to this day. And who better to start with than Cary Grant, the man Howard Hawks called "the best that there is" and Hitchcock once described as "the only actor I ever loved in my whole life." So here it is, our eulogy to the great man – and apologies if it gets too lovey. He's just that great, you know? |
| | | Jamie Lee Curtis Vs Sigourney Weaver Touchstone's latest, You Again, sees Jamie Lee Curtis and Sigourney Weaver as old high-school rivals who resume hostilities when their families are thrown together by a plot device marriage. It's a grrrrrom-com with a difference: more cat fights than you could squeeze into a suburban dustbin. The pair are two of our favourite actresses – c'mon, it's Ellen Ripley and the Scream Queen – and both have career paths with uncanny similarities. But who'd come out on top in a real-life face-off? We've taken a forensic eyeball to their filmographies to put together a thespian face-off that is almost, but not quite, as contrived as the movie. Still, it's not as one-sided as you might imagine… |
| | | Eight Classic Hammer Posters As British as a Jammy Dodger and boasting equal quantites of viscous red gloop, Hammer Films is enjoying a vampire-shaped renaissance with the acclaimed Let Me In. Okay, it's set in wintry New Mexico rather than Old Blighty but Matt Reeves' reimaging of John Ajvide Lindqvist's novel and the release of a new book of Hammer artwork gives us a wonderful opportunity to cast an admiring eye over some of the classic posters and rarities in the studio's archive. Gathered from private collections and dank crypts the world over, The Art Of Hammer offers nearly 300 fabulous and freaky posters to pick from. Some you'll know, many you won't. We've picked eight favourites to share. |
| | | Guess The Movie From The Clock Time, time, time... sometimes there's not enough of it (your honeymoon), and sometimes there's too much of it (that finance for non-finance managers meeting last Wednesday) but in reality it's always the same speed - just look at a clock. Or in this case, loads of clocks, all from different movies, all surprisingly different. Your job is to identify the film from the timepiece and whack the title in the box beneath the picture. Got it? Now quick, time is very much of the essence... |
| | | The Transcript: Dolph Lundgren Webchat Sporting an exceptionally sharp suit, Dolph Lundgren strolled into our offices this week to talk about his career, from A View To A Kill to The Expendables and everything in between. And, once he'd sat down and knocked back a coffee, he did just that. Expect questions (and answers) on Brandon Lee, The Running Man, Van Damme, scaring burglars, and working with Sly again... |
| | | The 50 Best Animated Characters The second golden age of animation is well under way, with Aardman, Miyazaki, Disney Pixar and DreamWorks rolling out rather good stories on a fairly regular basis. But which characters of the stop-motion, CG or hand-drawn world really make the grade? Which existing characters made the leap from short form to full-length feature with their dignity intact? How do the newcomers really compare to old hands of earlier eras? Read on to find out… | | | |
