This Week...
This newsletter comes to you via the medium of time travel. As you read it, we will all be hard at work at Empire Presents…BIG SCREEN, and far too busy with the 250 things on offer to do over the three-day event to tell you what's happening on the website or assemble quotes of the week. Right now, for instance, we're getting a sneak peek at 20th Century Fox's upcoming films, and preparing for a screening of Cowboys & Aliens later (the premiere last night kicked off Big Screen in style). A little later, we'll be meeting the Animal Stars of the Movies and becoming Padawans in Star Wars training school. And that's just a fraction of what we're doing the first day! If you can, come down and join us at The O2 in London; failing that, console your weary heart with the goodies online. We have interviews with the Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes filmmakers and star Andy Serkis; we have a complete profile of this summer's blockbusters, rated by Spielberginess; we have a sit-down with the lovely Audrey Tautou and much, much more.

Andy Serkis Talks Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes
Andy Serkis is a bit of a hero. Not only has he played some of cinema's most iconic characters - in a skintight grey suit, no less - but he's also one of the world's loveliest human beings, a combination that has made him a longtime Empire favourite. So we thought it might be a nice idea to ask you, the Empire readers, to come up with some questions for him - questions we'd ask him face-to-face at his Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes press junket. This, ladies and gentlemen, is the result, and just so you know, it's pretty weird. You know, in a good way. After that, check out our other interviews with director Rupert Wyatt and Weta VFX guru Dan Lemmon, who talk ape-creation, the acronym "ROTPOTA", and, as they say, much, much more...

The Chronology Of The Planet Of The Apes
Confused by the tricksy time-travelling chronology of the original Planet Of The Apes series? So we were, so we persuaded in-house expert Dan Jolin to explain what the Charlton Heston actually happened in the five original films. How did the Apes get to 20th century Earth again? And when exactly did that fascist state rise? All is explained...

This Summer's Blockbusters, Rated By Spielberg-iness
A lot of the summer blockbusters this year feel a bit like they were directed by Steven Spielberg - even though his big feelgood movie, War Horse The Adventures Of Tintin: The Secret Of The Unicorn, doesn't come out until November. But he has dabbled in several of the films that have brightened our multiplexes this summer, and even some of those with no 'Berg involvement sometimes seem to belong alongside his canon. So here's our take on this year's big films, rated by Spielberginess...

Revisiting Planet Of The Apes: Which To Watch And Which To Avoid
Not since Evil Dr. Porkchop hit the 'Death by Monkey' button in Toy Story 3 has cinema seen the kind of simian assault that's on offer in Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes. But the shadow of another man, producer Arthur P. Jacobs, still lingers over the seminal franchise. It was Jacobs who first acquired the rights to Bridge On The River Kwai writer Pierre Boulle's 'La Planete des Singes', a 1963 sci-fi allegory in which journalist Ulysse Mérou voyages to the star system of Betelgeuse and lands on the planet Sonar, where he's captured and imprisoned by super-smart apes. Cue a box-office smash that spawned four sequels of varying quality, not to mention two TV series, a remake, a Simpsons' Homer-age and Rupert Wyatt's new prequel. But which to revisit and which to avoid like a barrel of monkeys? Follow Empire back to the future...

    Audrey Tautou On Beautiful Lies
When she's not leaving clues lying about on the streets of Paris, Audrey Tautou has been busy carving out a distinctive and idiosyncratic filmography. For every Amelie, there's been a Dirty Pretty Things; for every A Very Long Engagement, a Coco Before Chanel. Sugar and spice, and, except for a certain Dan Brown adaptation, all things nice. It's certainly a CV free from compromise. Her latest film, salon-set Beautiful Lies, is no exception: a comedy-drama that can touch nerves with a hot curling iron while prodding you right on the funny bone. Everyone's favourite gamine French actress talked us through this double-jointed dramedy...

    James Marsh Talks Project Nim
From the Oscar-winning team behind Man On Wire comes the story of Nim, the chimpanzee, who, in the 1970s, became the focus of a landmark experiment. The aim was to show that an ape could learn to communicate with language. The method? Raising and rearing Nim like a human child – complete with breast feeding and nappy changing. As we see Nim grow from a cute ball of fluff to a powerful beast with a taste for fast cars and smoking weed, we get an insight into both the animal and human kingdoms. Empire sat down with director James Marsh to find out more about his moving, insightful documentary.

    Dominic Cooper Webchat
After his roles in An Education, Tamara Drewe, Captain America and, of course, Mamma Mia! there is no doubt in anyone's mind that Dominic Cooper's star is firmly on the rise. Further proof comes in the form of his new double role as both Uday Hussein/Latif Yahia, Saddam Hussein's playboy son and his body double, in The Devil's Double. Critics agree he delivers a knockout performance (or two) and as he was town, we thought we'd ask him round for a cup of coffee and a webchat to ask him about it all. You know, because we're nice like that.

Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes

It's nowhere close to E. T. — what is? — but amongst the hullabaloo of summer, Super 8 is something to cherish: a beautifully made homage to better times, and better movies.
