This Week...
With less than a week now until the start of Empire Presents...BIG SCREEN, it's all go here in the office. Lucy's desk is currently invisible behind a wall of goodies and spot prizes, while everyone else spends at least 90% of each day on the phone with some of the visitors we're expecting to come along, sorting out last-minute details and ensuring that everything will run smoothly on the day(s). You know how it is: one star needs transport to the event, another has an entourage, another will only eat dead mice and might fly off if left unattended (but enough about Chris). We have a fantastic line-up of guests, premieres, previews and screenings planned, as well as Q&As, masterclasses, debates and quizzes. If it's happenin' and film-related, it's going to be there, so make sure you are too.

My new favourite word comes from this games press release I've just received. It's 'extrava-splosive'. I'm going to use it every day for the rest of my life.

Why I Hate Penguins (In The Movies)
I have a reputation, around the Empire office, as a Penguin Hater. Someone actually stuck a sticker to that effect on the top of my monitor (and another on the back) lest I forget or try to live down said opinion. And with the release of Mr Popper's Penguins this week, I thought it might be worth discussing this prejudice and its causes and treatments.

    The Many Looks Of Superman
With yesterday's unveiling of the new Superman costume that Henry Cavill will be wearing in Man Of Steel, we thought it was time to take a look back at the different outfits that Superman has sported over the years. Because while he's always had the same basic elements, the outfits have undergone some significant tweaks since his first screen appearance in 1948 (we're not counting animated offerings). Here's a quick summary of the well-dressed Kryptonian superhero's favourite looks...

The Cast Of The Wire: Where Are They Now?
Since the end of David Simon's seminal HBO drama series back in 2008, there's been an on-going TV catfight to see which show deserves to be dubbed "the new Wire". So far, no-one's managed it - though the original version of The Killing comes close - but the fact that we're still holding up Simon's cops-and-druglords-and-politicians-and-more epic as the best TV show since forever is proof that it's still very much in the minds and hearts of telly watchers. So we thought we'd take a look at some of our favourite characters and see what the actors who played them are up to now...

How Hollywood (Fictionally) Won World War Two
From the moment of America's entry into World War Two in 1942, the Axis powers were up against a determined and resourceful foe: Hollywood. As US bombers flew into battle with Rita Hayworth and Betty Grable daubed on their fuselages, Tinseltown unleashed a series of big-screen American heroes into action against Nazi Germany. There were grizzled veterans on the run from their past (John Bramble in Five Graves To Cairo), everymen caught in moral mazes (Saboteur's Barry Kane), and grizzled everymen in moral mazes (the iconic Rick Blaine in Casablanca). The ordinary Joe took the fight to Adolf but the damage to the Nazi war effort – a spy captured here, a plot foiled there – was hardly the stuff to put the dictator in a end-of-Downfall mood. But with the advent of blockbusters, that all changed. Hollywood has upped the ante massively on the Third Reich. Just as well, because, as Indy and more recently Captain America have discovered, Hitler has started thinking bigger too. With Cap currently tearing the Nazis a new one, what better time to look at the new breed of war winners?

How NOT To Conquer Planet Earth
The third rock from Sol is home to an unpleasant species of bipedal apes who are mostly fixated on destroying their planet and killing each other. They call themselves 'humans', and woe betide anyone who pays them a visit. It usually ends in explosions. These humans have fought extraterrestrial species of every imaginable kind in almost every imaginable scenario and, despite their horrendous failings, always seem to win. Why? Those they couldn't beat with raw brawn or heavy weaponry were overcome with cunning and terrible malice. So, possible visitors, here's a list of some of the tactics they've employed so far. If you come in peace (which is probably a bad idea) you may wish to read this guide instead – but if conquest is your aim, here are some previous pitfalls.

Jim Carrey On Mr Popper's Penguins
It's been a while since we saw a full-on Jim Carrey comedy, but this one brings a new one around again in the form of Mr Popper's Penguins, the story of a businessman who inherits six penguins from his deceased father. Our James White sat down with the funnyman in LA recently to talk working with animals, getting smashed every day and working with animatronics...

Super 8 Cast And Director Interviews
Super 8, JJ Abrams' latest, hits the UK at last this Friday, and we're rather excited. The 1970s-set story follows a group of teens as they try to shoot a zombie movie on a Super 8 camera - but when they witness a catastrophic train crash, it becomes clear that there are bigger problems afoot than any fictional zombies. We talked to director JJ Abrams and actors Kyle Chandler (Friday Night Lights), Elle Fanning (Somewhere) and Joel Courtney, Riley Griffiths and Ryan Lee, to get the full story of the science fiction epic - and we're even treated to a fresh rendition of My Sharona...

    The Ultimate Penguin Picture Quiz
Penguins have had a recent resurgence, cinematically, be they dancing, marching or surfing. The most recent penguin-filled full-length feature, Mr. Popper's Penguins, stars Jim Carrey and boasts six of the cuddly/slippery buggers being all cuddly/slippery. So to celebrate the existence of penguins, and so penguin movies, we thought we'd create a penguin-themed picture quiz. That said, not all of the questions are strictly penguin-related - some are penguin suits. You'll see what we mean...
