 | This Week... What a momentous week! Our new Empire podcast went to number one in the UK iTunes chart, which was a fantastic result only two weeks in. Try it yourself with today's third instalment: it's free, and you can download it from iTunes or in mp3 form from our Soundcloud, or stream it on the site. As if that weren't enough, the week got better when we had a delivery of haddock and chips for the entire office, and a simply gorgeous cake to boot. But it wasn't all fun and games and free food! Oh no: we also profiled the finest cancelled TV shows; interviewed Mark Wahlberg about his new film, Contraband; and brought you Michael Caine's view on his career in his own words. Next week we have a whole host more interviews lined up, and even a Wednesday lunchtime webchat with local heroes Dexter Fletcher and Jason Flemyng, who will be here at 1pm to chat about their new film, Wild Bill. Be there, or miss out big-time! Helen O'Hara Deputy Editor, Empire | | |

 | | | | | Guest Blog: Peter Lord's Pirates! Diary Part 6 - Viva Las Vegas "Ahoy swabs and lubbers! This blog comes to you live and direct from Las Vegas (cue trashy theme music). I make no apologies for being here. Heaven knows, I spent long enough in the Aztec West Business Park, north of Bristol. Now that I've actually finished the Pirates movie, I've got a couple of chances to experience the outside world and by Neptune I'm going to seize them." | | | |

 | | | | | In Memoriam: TV Shows Cancelled Before Their Time Now that the Spielberg-produced Terra Nova has been consigned to the great dinosaur graveyard in the sky, we cast a respectful eye back over those milestones of modern television that were never given the chance to find their full potential. Pray stand and let us have a minute's silence as we remember fallen friends, brutally cut down in their prime. | |
| | | 40 Astonishing Movie Star Music Video Cameos It's fair to say that the pop world has had better luck in Tinseltown than Hollywood's finest have had bashing out chart-topping ditties. Need proof? Just hit play on Steven Seagal's ear-burning Songs From The Crystal Cave, try to lay your hands on Bruce Willis' The Return Of Bruno or listen to just anything by Russell Crowe's 30 Odd Foot Of Grunt. Of course, there are minor exceptions - Scarlett and Zooey, take a bow - but as a rule, actors' musical ambitions are served best with sparkling cameos in music videos. There they can wow us without being allowed anywhere near an instrument. Of course, there are too many examples to list them all, but here are a few we love - and a few almost too terrible to mention. |
| | | Mark Wahlberg Talks Contraband Mark Wahlberg fought insane jetlag recently when he flew into London to talk about his new film, Contraband, wherein he plays a former smuggler who's sucked back into his old life to save his brother-in-law's life. It's a remake of Icelandic thriller Reykjavik-Rotterdam, directed by that film's producer/star, and it's a solid crime drama. We caught up with him to ask about his connection to the film, how things have changed since The Fighter, and what he thinks of Hugh Hefner screening Contraband at the Playboy Mansion... |
| | | The Best Filmmaker's TED Talks Over the last few years, it's become apparent that anyone who's anyone, creatively speaking, should deliver a TED talk at some point. An organisation that began in 1984 devoted to Technology, Entertainment and Design has grown into a forum for creative ideas, business discussion, scientific innovation and just about anything else that sounds cool. Along the way, some Hollywood types have been among those big brains to speak, offering their take on everything from storytelling to secret keeping to product placement. We've gathered some of our favourites below - including one that hasn't even happened yet... |
| | | The Ludicrous Action Character Names Quiz: The Van Damme Edition Like all action heroes, Jean-Claude has had his fair share of utterly preposterous character names over the years. More often than not, they're Frenchy in nature - literally in the case of "Frenchy", in fact - so with this in mind, you're going to have to work out which pseudo-Belgian nom and prénom corresponds to which JCVD action spectacular for the following film quiz. In other words, read the name, work out the movie it's from, pop the name of said movie in the box underneath... et voila! |
| | | Empire Meets GasLand Director, Josh Fox When New York theatre director Josh Fox released his debut documentary GasLand, he announced himself as one of the most exciting documentary filmmakers working today. A challenging, angry exposé and an elegiac paean to America, GasLand reveals the human toll of industrial drilling for natural gas, or "fracking." In a scene that must surely be recognised as one of the great moments in modern documentary filmmaking, one local holds a flame to his running kitchen tap, only for the water to catch light and go up in a terrible ball of flame. "Jesus Christ," we hear Josh scream from behind the camera, before deadpanning: "Yeah, it's not supposed to do that." He speaks to Empire about the making of GasLand 2, his opinions on the Joseph Kony viral video, the destructive influence of lobbying on democracy, and the digital revolution. |
| | | Time Capsule: Michael Caine On Michael Caine Michael Caine turns 79 today. The voice, as Rob Brydon so adroitly noted, has changed: all the brandy and cigars have lowered its timbre, putting anyone who can only do the Italian Job-era Caine out of work. The glasses, so long chunky-framed and modish, are thinner, less Harry Palmer, more Dennis Taylor. The hair is still curly and tight on the head, albeit white rather than that sunflower yellow that first captivated the world in Zulu. When Empire met him he'd walked to the top London hotel, because it's just around the corner from where he lives. He's alone. No entourage. He's full of laughter and anecdotes and a sense of contentment; at a life lived, at a career that knocks spots off most others - even when you count The Swarm and all those terrible cash-ins he did in the early '80s. So, when Empire took him down Memory Lane via an iPad loaded with pictures, there was lots to talk about. | | | |

 | | | | | 21 Jump Street 21 Jump Street has that Anchorman experimental-chaos vibe, with all the hit-and-miss moments that implies. It's completely lunatic and sort of a mess. It's also the funniest high-school comedy to come out of Hollywood in ages. | | | | Also Out | | | This week's video trailers and clips. Every week, our video player will update to show trailers and clips from the week's movie releases listed above. | | |
