 | This Week... If you thought that this year's awards season had packed up its portable red carpet, dusted off King Jong-il's ashes and handed Jack Nicholson's sunglasses into lost property, think again. The build-up the 2012 Jameson Empire Awards, the only movies awards voted for by us, the movieland muggles, is reaching a crescendo. The voting closes on Monday, so now's your chance to put a tick next to your favourite movies and performances of the last 12 months. C'mon, it's more fun than the Russian election and features 57% fewer chads than the US version. Also this week, we've also had another breathtaking still from Prometheus, a first look at Johnny Depp in The Lone Ranger and a rendezvous with the cast of John Carter. We even found time to have a chat with John Cusack about The Raven. Or was it a chat with a raven about John Cusack? One of the two. Phil de Semlyen Deputy Deputy Online Editor, Empire | | |

 | | | | | A Update: The Harry Potter Studio Tour And Butterbeer A few months ago I blogged about the upcoming WB Studio Tour London - The Making Of Harry Potter, and we wrote about it in last month's magazine as well. You may remember that in both cases we discussed that this will not be an immersive experience like Florida's Wizarding World Of Harry Potter; this is more about the process of making the films. As a result, there won't be actors in costume hanging about and there won't be butterbeer on sale. But that was then. This week we got a slightly sheepish call to inform us that someone had changed their mind: there would be butterbeer after all. And would we like to go up and try some? | | | |

 | | | | | Vote Now! The 2012 Awards Shortlist The first round of voting for the 2012 Jameson Empire Awards is now complete. We've sifted through the virtual sacks of entries and assembled the shortlist of finalists who will be waiting with baited breath on the night itself. It's not over yet, though. With the gold in sight there's still time to cast your vote and see your pick of the year's films and filmmakers lauded on Awards night. Let the final round of voting commence! | |
| | | Play Spy Thriller Bingo! If you've seen any thrillers lately you'll know that on-screen espionage is an ever-shifting world full of betrayal, danger and a bit more betrayal. Nothing is what it seems. The good guy? He's actually the bad guy. That toaster? A weapon. That bloke with the beard? Angelina Jolie. But do not fear: this handy guide will steer you through the murky spy business that is Safe House, Salt, The Recruit, Bourne and all the other espionage thrillers currently infiltrating your DVD collection. Treadstone would call it an 'Optimised Terminology Grid'. We call it 'spy bingo'. |
| | | John Cusack: A Viewer's Guide You can tell a lot about someone by their favourite John Cusack movie. The music lover would go for High Fidelity; fans of the surreal would opt for Being John Malkovich - probably while pretending to be a pear - while the eternal teenager might take The Sure Thing. The incurable romantic will plump for Say Anything, and those with short attention spans would put a tick next to The Thin Red Line (well, if you fast-forward to the Cusack bits, it's pretty brief). If your DVD player is stolen, your choice is probably Con Air. Truth is, they're all good. As the man himself says with customary modesty, "I've made ten good films." There has also been a duffer or two along the way - he'd admit that too - but there are more than enough hits to delight his army of fans. Here's Empire's suggestions of where to start - and where not to. |
| | | Your Guide To John Carter's Mars One of the reasons that it's taken 100 years to get John Carter to Mars is that Edgar Rice Burrough's vision of the planet is a world filled with different cultures and creatures, and it can all get a bit confusing for newcomers. Here, for your assistance and edification, is a quick breakdown of what to expect when visiting Mars - or, as the natives term it, Barsoom... |
| | | John Carter Of Mars - The Grandaddy Of Sci-Fi You might know the Star Wars saga better than Yoda, but to truly classify yourself as a sci-fi super nerd, you need to know your John Carter Of Mars, front to back. Inspiring pretty much everything in the world of science fiction that came after it, Edgar Rice Burrough's tales of Barsoom and its inhabitants can be seen in any sci-fi you care to name. Want proof? You've got proof - in this handy checklist, no less. |
| | | John Cusack Talks The Raven For John Cusack the distant ghetto-blasting days of Say Anything are now a distant and mildly uncomfortable memory. That movie may still illicit tiny whoops of internal delight from its bajillions of fans, but its star has gone on to even bigger and better things, The Grifters, High Fidelity, Bullets Over Broadway and The Thin Red Line among them. In Being John Malkovich he got to enter the consciousness of another actor; in Con Air he got to fly a helicopter gunship. Yup, life has been pretty sweet for Illinois's son. Just lately, though, it's taken a turn for the dark. In mystery-thriller The Raven he plays US literary great Edgar Allan Poe, a depressive with a taste for a tipple and a ruddy great serial killer to deal with. Empire met up with Cusack to ask about the trials and tribulations of entering this bloody netherworld. |
| | | Empire Meets James McTeigue Sydney born and raised, James McTeigue went from production running on small Aussie flicks to a Hollywood director's chair and a clapperboard with his name on it in just over 15 years. It's been a slow but steady path for the filmmaker that's taken in assistant director gigs on such VFX game-changers as Attack Of The Clones and The Matrix. Since then he's directed V For Vendetta and secured a spot in the zeitgeist when its Guy Fawkes' masks were appropriated by the Anonymous and Occupy movements. So, we asked him, how does he feel about being a father of subversion, and how important were those experiences with George Lucas and the Wachowskis. What about seeing Clones back on the big screen? To say that the answer was surprising is an understatement. |
| | | Game Of Thrones: We Quiz The Cast Season one of fantasy mega-hit Game Of Thrones hits DVD and Blu-ray this Monday March 5, and since we're huge fans we leapt at the chance to talk to some of the cast this week. Nicolaj Coster-Waldau (Jaime Lannister), Emilia Clarke (Daenerys Targaryen) and Kit Harington (Jon Snow) chatted about which actors have the easiest time of it during filming, which characters they think will survive the series, and how long they personally would last on Westeros. Spoiler-free, unless you consider speculation spoiler-ific... |
| | | John Carter Interviews If you know your Barsoom from your Jeddak, the chances are that a copy of John Carter Of Mars has been perched on your bookshelf for some time. If Edgar Rice Burroughs' sci-fi series isn't familiar, all you need to know is contained within these interviews with the cast and director of Disney's spectacular blockbuster adaptation. We sat down with John Carter himself, Taylor Kitsch - being careful to tie him down so he couldn't leap away - as well as his co-stars Lynn Collins (Dejah Thoris) and Willem Dafoe (Tars Tarkas) and talked Martian turkey. Then we chatted to Andrew Stanton, the man who's steered Wall-E and Finding Nemo into the Pixar firmament, about adjusting to live-action and ensuring this iconic/sci-fi fantasy is done justice on the big screen. Kaor gorthan turgan haad! |
| | | The Ultimate Zoo Animals Picture Quiz Over the years, we've had a number of animal-based picture quizzes. Bears have made an appearance, as have apes, penguins and birds, and dogs of course, but today we're tackling the whole zoo. Well, we say the whole zoo - it's mainly all the other big name beasties that don't fall into the other categories. This may make it a touch more difficult than normal, but we know you're up to the task. Unless you need a hint, in which case, best head to the forums - they know pretty much everything about everything there. |
| | | Cinema's Silliest Undercover Assignments Movie police work means a lot of doughnuts and drudgery, but every once in a while an assignment comes along that's so covert its own mum wouldn't recognise it. All those hours of tedious footslog and stakeouts in sweaty Buicks can pay off in an intense corner of the criminal underworld. One minute you're pushing paper at the precinct; the next you're in an Italian restaurant hugging a large man called Frank. But it's dangerous and disorientating business - you're going to need to keep your wits about you and a disguise handy at all times. Follow the example of these movie cops and you may just stay alive. And if you're lucky, you might even get a cheap gold watch at the end of it. |
| | | The Best Filmmaker's TED Talks Over the last few years, it's become apparent that anyone who's anyone, creatively speaking, should deliver a TED talk at some point. An organisation that began in 1984 devoted to Technology, Entertainment and Design has grown into a forum for creative ideas, business discussion, scientific innovation and just about anything else that sounds cool. Along the way, some Hollywood types have been among those big brains to speak, offering their take on everything from storytelling to secret keeping to product placement. We've gathered some of our favourites below - including one that hasn't even happened yet... | | | |
