 | This Week... It's been a busy week here at Empire. We hosted a webchat with the American Pie: Reunion gang, which was as dementedly outrageous as you might expect given the people involved. Still, once we realised that there's no easy way to transcribe someone mimicking masturbation and gave up trying to describe exactly what was going on here in the office, everything went very well and the gang were positively charming. As if that weren't enough, this coming Monday we have another webchat to look forward to - this one with Game Of Thrones creator George RR Martin. D'you think if we bring out thumbscrews instead of the usual spread of sandwiches, he'll give up some spoilers? Probably not, but if you guys phrase your questions well, maybe we'll be able to shake some secrets loose. It's worth a try, right? Helen O'Hara Deputy Editor, Empire | | |

 | | | | | Cannes 2012: Some Thoughts On The Official Lineup It is, by now, traditional to begin a story about the year's Cannes lineup with a list of films that aren't going to be there, but the big surprise about the 65th edition is just how many are. So let's get all that stuff out of the way. No, Paul Thomas Anderson's The Master isn't going, but with a recently announced October release date - and a controversial subject matter - it was never likely to. Woody Allen is giving his new film To Rome With Love a non-festival premiere in Italy, and also notable by their absence are Terrence Malick's untitled Ben Affleck movie and Wong Kar-Wei's The Grandmasters, although neither director has ever been a safe bet to turn up even when their films are ready and programmed. Other than that, there are no really notable omissions with the possible exception of Derek Cianfrance's The Place Beyond The Pines, which stars Ryan Gosling and could conceivably pop up in the parallel Directors' Fortnight selection, to be revealed in a week's time. | | | |

 | | | | | Cinematic Re-Releases: Which Poster Is Better? In this special vote-along-a-feature, we pit original movie posters against the efforts for subsequent rereleases so that the poster-designers of tomorrow can take your wise words into account when designing re-issue posters for Jack & Jill, or whatever. To make things easier, we've picked just one example for each film for each cinema outing. And where there have been many reissues, we've gone for the latest edition where possible. That's right, we're looking at you, Gone With The Wind – we know your game. So read on, choose your favourite and vote away... | |
| | | The Empire Podcast #8 Is Here! For our eighth podcast, Guy Pearce dropped by to give us his thoughts on heading to space for Lockout (and Prometheus, of course) as well as some memories of L.A. Confidential and, um, wearing glasses. You'll have to listen to the whole thing to see how spectacles crop up, to be honest. |
| | | Ewan McGregor: A Viewer's Guide Velvet Goldmine's opening epigram - "Although what you are about to see is a work of fiction, it should nevertheless be played at maximum volume" - could be equally well applied to Ewan McGregor's CV. Everyone's favourite Davidoff-scented Scotsman has always been capable of high volume. From Shallow Grave and Trainspotting to Moulin Rouge! and last year's Beginners, the roles he's picked have rarely lacked a subversive edge. This week's Salmon Fishing In The Yemen, an altogether gentler adventure, gives the perfect excuse to delve into the McGregor tackle-box and sort the hot tuna from the rancid sprats. |
| | | 1940s Avengers Assembled! It's no secret that we loved Avengers Assemble, but as we discussed it the other day, we started to wonder how it might have looked in years gone by. If, for example, they did mega-budget superhero action movies in the 1930s and '40s, who might have been cast as Earth's Mightiest Heroes? No sooner did we speculate than we started photoshopping, and here for your amusement are the results. As awesome as the 2012 effort? We'll never know, but it's fun to imagine... |
| | | American Pie: Reunion - The Webchat It was, perhaps, our biggest webchat ever. Six members of the American Pie: Reunion cast descended on the Empire office to discuss their latest film, and proceeded to take the mickey out of each other, discuss the appeal of '70s porn and generally behave just as one might have hoped after seeing them onscreen. Here, for your amusement, are Eugene Levy, Jason Biggs, Jennifer Coolidge, Mena Suvari, Eddie Kaye Thomas and Thomas Ian Nicholas's answers. And if you're wondering whether they're joking at any point, the answer's yes, they almost certainly are. |
| | | Emily Blunt On Salmon Fishing In The Yemen As you might have guessed, we've spoken with Emily Blunt before - most recently, for 2009's animated Shakespeare adaptation (and Elton John-a-thon), Gnomeo & Juliet. That particular interview got wonderfully surreal very quickly, so for the follow-up we took a similar tack, ending up talking about '90s pop and unofficial Indiana Jones sequels. As you do. |
| | | Kevin Macdonald Talks Marley Kevin Macdonald is movieland's very own Ray Mears. Touching The Void sent him up bloody great mountains, The Last King Of Scotland had him yomping through Uganda's scorching cities, while The Eagle dunked him into chilly Scottish rivers. By comparison, his ace new Bob Marley documentary was a relatively serene affair, although it did take him from Ghana to the Caribbean and back collecting remembrances of reggae's great icon. Empire chatted to the filmmaker about the film, as well as his documentary and feature-making career and his granddad, the great Emeric Pressburger. |
| | | Five Films To See At Sundance London Robert Redford's indie and arthouse mecca Sundance arrives in London on April 26 for four days of movies, music and general soul enrichment. Like Comic-Con for culture-vultures, it crams 14 feature films, eight shorts, several gigs, and, no doubt, quite a few memorable moments into that short space of time. But, you're probably asking yourself, what should I spend my hard-earned on? Good question. Here for the time-poor movie fan is Empire's pick of five Sundance films designed to suit any mood. |
| | | The Avengers Movie Poster Mashups Our crack squad of movie poster masher-uppers have really excelled themselves this week, taking to the topic of "The Avengers And Beyond" like Tony Stark takes to, say, the bottle. Or flying around in a supersuit. One or the other, really. Anyway, their resulting poster mashups are an utter delight, which is why we heartily recommend you take a look at them... now. |
| | | It's That Story You Like... But In Space! Lockout is released this week, and bears a more-than-passing resemblance to Escape From New York, with a Presidential type trapped in an anarchic future-prison and rescued by a wisecracking action man. But what other Earth-bound films have been reimagined in space? We gathered a few of our favourites together for your amusement... | | | |
