 | This Week... There was only one place to be this week and for once it wasn't the nearest Avengers screening. Yes, the Cannes Film Festival has begun. The great and good of movieland have decamped to the South of France for 11 days of hobnobbing, movie-watching and deal-making, transforming the Croisette into the centre of the movie universe. Hey, do you think Bill Murray wears this jacket for just any film festival? Amid the hubbub was Team Empire, brandishing its dictaphone and trying to remember the French for "auteur". While those lucky blighters were chatting with Wes Anderson about Moonrise Kingdom, his lovely slice of '60s Americana, here in Blighty we were busy karate-chopping The Raid director Gareth Evans until he told us all about the inspirations for his ferocious actioner. Our verdict? EPIC. Quite a week, all in all. After all that excitement we had to go and watch The Avengers again. Phil de Semlyen Staff Writer, Empire | | |

 | | | | | The Avengers Effect: Shawarma Sales And Movie Product Placement This week The Avengers (Assemble) has rarely been out of the headlines, but one particular story caught my eye. Website TMZ reported that sales of Shawarma have seen a massive increase following the release of the film in the United States. This relates to a scene in the film where MILD SPOILERS, an exhausted Iron Man suggest that they all go try some shawarma. US audiences are also treated to a much-rumoured second post-credit scene which shows the team enjoying the dish which, for Tony Stark's information, is slices of spiced chicken served with warm pitta and a variety of sauces. | | | |

 | | | | | Female Avengers We Want For The Sequel We loved the assemblage of The Avengers. And with the movie cruising past box-office records every day, the idea that Disney and Marvel will order a sequel is less a thought, and already a foregone conclusion at this point. But if there was one way you could improve the film, it might be to sprinkle in some of the female Avengers from the comics, to balance out the sausage fest. And when even writer-director Joss Whedon himself has said the female ranks could use a boost, who are we to argue? Here come the girls... | |
| | | A Guide To Rick Baker: Monster Maker From B-movies to Mos Eisley and onto a galaxy of space creatures and movie monsters (misunderstood and otherwise), makeup maestro Rick Baker has scarified our dreams for more than 40 years. The release of Men In Black 3 sees him revisit an old universe, a universe that he's repopulated with suitably weird and wonderful extra-terrestrials, including Jemaine Clement's goggle-faced Boris the Animal. To celebrate the return of a movie great, we've gorilla-loving special effects king, Rick Baker, has done it again, creating another triumph in the form of Benicio Del Toro's Wolfman this week, all teeth, growling and worrying personal hygiene problems. To celebrate the great man's work, we look back into the archives and see what other monsters Mr Baker has brought to life... |
| | | Ten Films To Watch Before The Raid The most blistering action film of the year so far, The Raid is so intense it will leave you with actual bruises. The man behind it, Welsh director Gareth Evans, sends Iko Uwais's greenhorn cop and a small SWAT team into the deadliest housing project in Jakarta, the kind of place that'd give even Snake Plissken second thoughts. It's a labyrinth of Silat-skilled villains and big bosses... oh, and guns. LOTS of guns. So what were the movies that inspired it? Empire called Evans in Indonesia to find out. Short of concertinaing your face with a wok, there's no other way to prepare yourself for 100 minutes of martial arts mayhem... |
| | | Movies' Most Dangerous Buildings The Raid this week sees an elite SWAT team storm an apartment building in Jakarta, only to encounter some extremely tough resistance from its inhabitants. All, it's fair to say, does not go well. But is it the most deadly address in movie history? We've surveyed a few other fatal addresses to establish the locations, locations, locations to avoid, avoid, avoid. |
| | | The Many Faces Of Sacha Baron Cohen Love him or hate him, you can't ignore Sacha Baron Cohen. The anarchic comedian is back with another satirical creation, General Haffaz "Death to the West!" Aladeen, in The Dictator. Even if you don't have one of the general's camels grazing in your front yard, you'll probably have got wind of it. But where does Aladeen stack up alongside his three other incarnations? Does he out-tickle Ali G, Borat and Bruno? You decide. |
| | | Empire Meets The Director Of The Source The Concert director Radu Mihaileanu's new drama, The Source, is a horror movie for any undersexed male. Its central premise - a battle of the sexes in a north African village - results in the menfolk faced with a sex strike by the disgruntled wives when they refuse to install a new well. When we met up with Mihaileanu to chat about the film he warned us that the idea could soon be spreading our way. "Pretty soon all the women of Britain will be on a love strike to get what they want!" laughed the Romanian director as Empire shifted nervously in its chair. We quickly ushered him onto other matters, including the response to the film in Cannes and in the Arab world. |
| | | Michelle Pfeiffer & Chloe Moretz On Dark Shadows Tim Burton's Gothic soap opera Dark Shadows has been likened to The Addams Family and Death Becomes Her, with its ghoulish ways and its creepy goings-on. While they may trump it in other areas, neither of those films can boast Johnny Depp channelling Count Orlok right down to his long, bony fingers, or Eva Green removing her own heart while swirling dementedly like the crazed offspring of Macbeth's witches and Mola Ram. We caught up with four of Burton's leading ladies to find out about the great man's methods and get to the bottom of Dark Shadows' longevity. |
| | | All In Good Time Interviews It's every newlywed's nightmare: All In Good Time finds the young couple of Atul (Reece Ritchie) and Vina (Amara Karan) trying to consumate their marriage despite being stuck in the family home following a honeymoon disaster. Directed by Calendar Girl's Nigel Cole and also starring Meera Syal, the film looks set to follow the tradition of British family comedies. We spoke to Cole and his cast about putting the film together... |
| | | The Ultimate Fish Picture Quiz Fish, then. They swim in the sea, they lie on our plates, they have the audacity to star in their own Ultimate Picture Quiz. Hell, those piranha fellows even have the gumption to attack those nice young ladies down at the swimming pool in that Piranha 3DD movie film that's coming out around about now. So to 'celebrate' that fact, here are thirty-odd fishes (of varying species) for you to identify the film from. Enjoy! | | | |
