 | This Week... Three day weeks are awesome. You're no sooner in the office than you realise the week is half-over, and just as you begin to fancy a break it's the weekend. Suddenly we're all (temporarily) monarchists. Still, we managed to fit a whole week's excitement into just three days. We had Simon Pegg and Crispian Mills drop by to talk A Fantastic Fear Of Everything, and director Bob Weide stopped in to chat Woody Allen: A Documentary. We also looked at sequel-baiting movie endings that didn't work, and every Tarantino trailer ever. But whoops! That's all we have time for. The week's over already, hooray! | | | | | Tarantino Trailers Through The Years Today saw the release of the first trailer for Django Unchained, Quentin Tarantino's latest slice of film goodness. It is, frankly, awesome - and it inspired us to look back at Tarantino trailers of yesteryear. Were they all this good? Read on, as we revisit the director's previous efforts (acting and writing appearances, portmanteau and "guest directing" spots not included)... | |
| | | The Empire Podcast #15 If you want to hear Simon Pegg share some titbits about The World's End, Star Trek 2 and his latest, A Fantastic Fear Of Everything on the Empire Podcast, then stop reading this introductory waffle and click on the picture of the tipped over box of popcorn... now. |
| | | Sequel Baiting Endings That Didn't Work Some films can't leave well enough alone. Before - or just after - the credits roll, they crowbar in a little snippet designed to leave us gagging for more. Heck, this summer has already seen several major films leave us with endings that just beg for a sequel, and not one of them involved Nick Fury. As the practice becomes increasingly common in blockbusters, from the well-conceived to the unrealistically optimistic, we take a look at the finales that set up a sequel that never happened. Spoilers, obviously, follow. |
| | | A Secret History Of Passport To Pimlico For British cinema, 1949 was an annus mirabilis. It was the year of The Third Man and the year that Ealing Studios, under the watchful eye of Sir Michael Balcon, released not one but three comic masterpieces: Kind Hearts And Coronets, Whisky Galore! and Passport To Pimlico. Funny and gently satirical in that arch way Ealing perfected, 'Pimlico' was arguably the smallest leap from the studio's wartime propaganda efforts - at least in terms of its bomb-blasted location and the barbed wire twisting around its perimeter. In this case, though, the wire wasn't to keep Jerry in but furious locals out. Cast member Barbara Murray took up the story when Empire delved into the Ealing archives... |
| | | The Ultimate Rock Star Picture Quiz It's a pretty rock and roll month for films, with both Mission To Lars and Rock Of Ages rocking up - no pun intended - in cinemas nationwide. Okay, we intended that pun, we apologise. Anyway, to celebrate both releases, here's a picture quiz boasting actors playing rock stars and rock stars playing at acting. Oh, and just as a little tip, David Bowie and Sting appear twice each, the greedy buggers. |
| | | Ill Manors: Ben Drew, Riz Ahmed and Anouska Mond If all this talk of Diamond Jubilees and London Olympics has convinced you that the East End of London is a wonderful place that's on the up, you might want to consider the corrective view offered by ill Manors. The first film from rapper / writer / director Ben Drew (aka Plan B), it tell six interwoven stories involving drug dealers, prostitutes, gangsters and teens. That said, it's not a complete misery fest, at least partly thanks to Riz Ahmed and Anouska Mond's spirited performances. We talked to all three about the film... |
| | | The Ultimate Spacesuit Picture Quiz The thing is about space is you can't breathe the air. In fact, in actual spacey space, there's no air at all. Bugger. So what you need is a spacesuit, and Hollywood is more than happy to give you a few pointers on that front. Sure, they're all fictional, and no, you're not going to be able to buy one ever, but you can dream, right? You can also picture quiz, so get on that in this special Prometheus-friendly sci-fi spectacular quizzymathing. Warning: contains a lot of massive goldfish bowls. | | | |

 | | | | | A Curb Your Enthusiasm season 8 box-set and Statue of Liberty wig (hat?) for the DVD and Blu-ray release on June 11, modelled here by Dan (with Chris photo-bombing, if you're interested). | | | |

 | | | | | A Fantastic Fear Of Everything It's always trying to do something unusual. It has a great lead in Pegg.
