 | This Week... This week started terrifyingly, when I got a call from reception to say, "Hello Helen? We have the Woman In Black here for you." Happily, when the ghastly spectre arrived she brought (black) cupcakes and a nice new (black) mug and a copy of the film and only menaced Chris with a horrible death, so it was all very nice really. The rest of the week saw us watching an avalanche of new trailers that hit the webs, talking to the stars of The Five-Year Engagement and recording another celebrity-filled podcast with the help of Noel Clarke and Emily Blunt. And if you're listening to the latter interview and wondering whether James had little cartoon hearts floating around his head as it happened, he totally did. | | | | | Edinburgh Film Festival 2012: Ten Picks The Edinburgh International Film Festival is upon us once again. Let's not dwell on last year's debacle, a complete farrago management-wise that still managed to provide some excellent movies thanks to its ever-vigilant and tasteful creative team. We can accept that the EIFF has never been the richest festival on the block, but last year's ridiculously drastic austerity measures simply went too far. Happily, the programming under the fantastic new festival director Chris Fujiwara shows the pendulum swinging back the other way, not towards lavish parties and A-list guests but towards a firm commitment to emerging talent, cult movies and other leftfield discoveries. | | | |

| | | The Empire Podcast #17 Another week, another Empire podcast, and this one's an absolute cracker. Boasting the dulcet tones of both Noel Clarke and Emily Blunt - as well as Empire's admittedly less dulcet warblings - it's a real treat for the ears. What's more, after pushing a few buttons and hammering a couple of knobs, this particular Empire Podcast has been levelled out and aurally improved, meaning that those of you who enjoy the podcasts in your cars / trucks / combine harvesters should be able to hear us more clearly. |
| | | Emily Blunt & Jason Segel Talk The Five-Year Engagement The stars of The Five-Year Engagement have now appeared together three times. Jason Segel and Emily Blunt first worked opposite one another in Gulliver's Travels, briefly crossed paths in The Muppets and now play a couple who can't quite tie the knot in their new rom-com. We talked to the pair about the ideal engagement length, those deleted scenes and waiting for the call on that Bruce Willis role... |
| | | The Jason Segel Webchat Transcript One of the stalwarts of the Judd Apatow comedy crew since the early days of Freaks and Geeks, Jason Segel's become one of the biggest comedy stars in the world. This summer, he's working with Apatow again on The Five-Year Engagement, out this week, and This Is 40, later this summer. We invited him in for a webchat to find out more about his career to date and his preferred bread snacks... |
| | | American Presidents On Screen This week sees the release of Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, in which a fresh-faced Abe (Benjamin Walker) takes time out from Emancipation Proclamations, Gettysburg Addresses and wearing a stovepipe hat to slaughter the blood-craving undead. In the near future Bill Murray's Franklin D. Roosevelt will also make his onscreen bow in Hyde Park On Hudson. The two films got us thinking: which other American presidents have made an impression on the big screen, and who played 'em? Here's a gallery for your reference... |
| | | The Ultimate Movie Vampires Picture Quiz The trouble with a movie picture quiz based on vampires is that so many vampiric films are called Dracula, or variations on a theme of Vlad the Impaler's patronymic name. Because of this, the quiz we've got for you below is a smidge on the hard side. Still, you're made of stern stuff, you'll be fine - just remember, on this occasion, a cross is a bad thing... you want a tick. Lovely stuff. |
