This Week...

Even for the PE-dodgers, couch potatoes and 98lb weaklings of Empire, the Olympics has been the main thing on our mind this week. Rarely have sports that we don't understand exercised such a hold - and we've been so inspired that we have even compiled a list of movie characters who could do better than these athletes at the Games. But we're still all about film at heart! This week we broke down the new Skyfall trailer to figure out what it told us about Bond and looked at Bond villains through the years; we talked to the stars of Ted and we dissected the rules of the ensemble movie poster. So if you need a break from trying to figure out what a Fosbury flop is and why someone would steeplechase, head this way.

Full Skyfall Trailer Is Here
We saw him jumping out of a helicopter with Her Majesty at the Olympics Opening Ceremony the other day, but now James Bond is back in full-on action in the latest, lengthy trailer for Skyfall. This is our best look yet at Sam Mendes' upcoming Bond effort, and we'd say this is rather promising.

Where Are The Great British Sports Movies?
We've just put together a list of the Greatest Sports Movies Ever Made, and Blighty does not come out of it well. I've just gone through and counted the number of British films on the list and, if we're talking films about sport in the UK there are six (possibly seven if you count Escape To Victory as British, which most people seem to want to). For contrast there are eight baseball films. And what I'm wondering is, why the heck is this?

The 11 Styles Of The Ensemble Movie Poster
The retro Expendables 2 poster unveiled at this year's Comic-Con was so full of action heroes, guns and explosions that you'd be hard pressed to find anything more masculine outside of a test tube full of testorerone. Of course, it's not the first ensemble movie to use the explosive pyramid technique, and after some extensive research, we can safely say it won't be the last. So for that and 10 other examples of ensemble movie poster tropes, click on, dear movie poster lover, click on...

    The Empire Podcast #22
If you've ever wanted to hear Dolph Lundgren impersonating Arnold Schwarzenegger, then you've come to the right movie podcast. The Empire Podcast, that is. As well as Gunnar Jensen doing an impression of Trent Mauser, there's City Of God and The Constant Gardener director Fernando Meirelles talking about his latest movie, 360, on top of all the regular movie waffle from the Empire Podcast team you've come to love and begrudgingly accept.

The Many Looks Of The Bond Villain
So you've lined up your volcanic lair, your army of henchmen and your gorgeous moll; you've crafted your plan for world-domination and remembered to feed the sharks swimming under the glass floor of your office. Now what? Well, no real villain - and certainly no Bond villain - would be caught without a distinctive personal style. After Skyfall villain Silva (Javier Bardem) appeared in action for the first time in this week's trailer, we assess his predecessors for their distinctive fashion choices...

Movie Characters Who Could Crush The Olympics
People sometimes talk about "Film Land", that amorphous place that exists only on the screen. But why should it be amorphous? If you ask us, Film Land should be recognised by the UN and, crucially, by the International Olympics Committee, allowing it to send a team to the Games. Here is the line-up we'd choose...

Mark Wahlberg, Mila Kunis and Seth MacFarlane Talk Ted
As a child, we probably all wished that our favourite toy would come to life. In Ted, Mark Wahlberg's John Bennett has to live with the consequences of such a wish when his bear, Ted (voiced by writer and director Seth MacFarlane) comes to life and lives with him even decades later - which causes some problems with his girlfriend Lori (Mila Kunis). We talked to Wahlberg, MacFarlane and Kunis about making the film, their favourite toys and naked pictures of Patrick Stewart...

10 Things We Learned From The New Skyfall Trailer
So the new Skyfall trailer has debuted, bringing us a first look at Javier Bardem's villain, Silva, Ben Whishaw's Q in 'action', and a sense of the film's fuller plot. Here are ten things we learned. And be warned: there are spoilers aplenty here, so if you want to go into Bond 23 a Skyfall virgin, best avoid. If not, then welcome. We've been expecting you...
