This Week...

This week has been an emotional rollercoaster. There was tragedy with the early death of Tony Scott, reported this Monday. There was comedy in our look at the greatest moments of slapstick. Film-of-the-week The Imposter had more tragedy in store, as did IRA drama Shadow Dancer. But the directors of both those films came in to podcast, and were joined by comedian Adam Buxton, so we nicely melded comedy and more serious topics with all three. And finally there was both comedy and tragedy in the story of the original Three Stooges , whose onscreen antics hid off-screen troubles. Frankly, what with all the ups and downs we're rather glad it's all over, and plan on greeting the weekend with the sort of exhausted relief usually reserved for the sight of Bruce Willis in a white vest at the end of a Die Hard movie. Luckily for us, this is the UK's last Bank Holiday before Christmas, giving everyone an extra day off to curse the inevitable rain that will fall and curl up with a good movie.

Marley & Me: Empire Goes To Jamaica
I'm a 27 year-old girl, with ginger hair and a penchant for Hanson (Come on, who didn't love MMMbop?!). So when the Empire folk asked me to travel to Jamaica to interview Bob Marley's family ahead of the DVD release of Kevin Macdonald's Marley I was a little concerned. The only three things I knew, or thought I knew, about Bob Marley were these: he smoked lots of weed, he had dreadlocks, and he sang that song about the woman who couldn't cry.

    Tony Scott On Tony Scott
The shocking and tragic death of Tony Scott deprives Hollywood of a true legend and moviegoers of a man who almost single-handedly redefined action movies. He could engineer an improbably awesome set piece, ratchet up tension through whipsmart dialogue and manipulate audiences' adrenal glands like a ringmaster controlling the world's most explosive circus. He was a pedal-to-the-metal filmmaker whose movies, in his own understated words, "don't hang around". From The Hunger to Unstoppable via Top Gun, True Romance, Crimson Tide and Enemy Of The State, they made an indelible impression. We'll miss them - and him.

    The Empire Podcast #25
Three interviews make this a jam-packed Empire Podcast this week, with Imposter director Bart Layton, Shadow Dancer (and Man On Wire) director James Marsh and veritable Podcast king, Adam Buxton, all coming round for a chat with the team. Elsewhere, we pay tribute to the one and only Tony Scott, review The Three Stooges (but not Keith Lemon) and discuss the fear-enducing powers of the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man.

    Empire's Special Adam Buxton Podcast
Adam Buxton is somewhat of a cult hero. Thanks to his work on the Adam & Joe show on Channel 4, then on XFM, then on BBC 6Music, he's amassed such a dedicated fanbase that we knew that releasing just ten minutes of our chat with him would be a great waste. Here then is a half-hour long special with the bearded podcast king, boasting the question-asking talents of Chris Hewitt, Nick de Semlyen and Ali Plumb.

16 Of Cinema's Greatest Slapstick Moments
Sometimes dismissed as a lesser form of comedy, slapstick is actually one of the hardest comic mediums to nail, requiring great timing, physical prowess and a good connection with your co-stars to get even the tiniest chortle from the audience. The Farrelly Brothers' Three Stooges reboot might not give the genre the kickstart it deserves, but it did get us thinking about the high points in slapstick history. Watch and marvel at the sheer insanity of some of these hijinks - and start petitioning your nearest studio to bring them back.

The Tragic And Twisted Tale Of The Three Stooges
The Three Stooges are arguably the most popular and influential comedy institution in Hollywood history. Yet Moe, Curly and Larry (and Shemp) did not receive the recognition and reward you might expect. In fact, as Empire reveals, their tale is one of exploitation, grievous bodily harm... and even murder.

    The Watch Video Interviews
The Watch sees Ben Stiller, Vince Vaughn, Jonah Hill and Richard Ayoade team up to form a neighbour hood watch group to spice up their suburban lives. They unfortunately find more than they bargained for when it appears that aliens are secretly invading their suburb. We spoke to all four stars, and director Akiva Schaffer, to get the lowdown on the film and find out what they have coming up next (clue: that includes Zoolander 2, Anchorman 2, 21 Jump Street 2 and some Lonely Island madness)...

Peter Farrelly & Jane Lynch On The Three Stooges
If your day could do with a boost, give yourself a poke in the eye with a couple of interviews about The Three Stooges, the childishly violent story of three idiots trying to save their childhood orphanage and accidentally ending up involved in a murder plot and reality show. Our James White went along to speak to director Peter Farrelly and star Jane Lynch (Mother Superior) to ask how the film came together and what they have coming up next...

    Joseph Kahn Talks Detention
It's hard to describe Joseph Kahn's Detention: let's just call it an average, everyday, perfectly normal tale of high school teen social politics, masked serial killers, human flies, interplanetary bears, time travel, mind transference, intense Canadians, vegetable-based alien life forms and being kept after class for nineteen years. It finally answers the question of whether Roadhouse beats Under Siege as a fighting style (can mullet really defeat ponytail?) and reveals beyond any doubt that music was cooler in 1992. Following a colourful career on the festival circuit - including a Biggest Surprise Award at last year's FrightFest - Detention arrives on DVD in the UK on August 27. We asked Kahn to explain himself.

    Ben Stiller: A Viewer's Guide
An unusually gifted actor/director who works hard to avoid being trapped in the goofball ghetto, Ben Stiller is back on our screens this week with The Watch, a sci-fi buddy movie with shades of The 'Burbs. It's the kind of riffy ensemble piece that he can probably do his sleep and perhaps not the best canvas to display his talents. His next directorial project, the intriguingly off-beam The Secret Life Of Walter Mitty, should see him back to form. In the meantime, here's a look at the best (and worst) of his career to date.

    Special Promotion Four Stories

Scripts must be no longer then 10 minutes and must include the Ultrabook and be set in a W hotel.

Pigeons can't watch TV. They process images 3 times faster than humans so they would just see a slideshow. Guess they'll be more entertained by the 48fps of The Hobbit though, eh?

Pope John Paul II was a fan of Hart To Hart.

Peter Facinelli (Carlisle Cullen in Twilight) claims that Breaking Dawn will finish with a dance-off.

PRs don't like it when you refer to their screening of The Sweeney as The Sweening.
