This Week...

The world's sports day is over, and that means we're back to all films, all the time around here! Now when someone on the TV throws a javelin, they'll be throwing it at someone else, and when someone runs, it will be because something is exploding behind them. And the film studios clearly feel the same way, releasing Brave, The Bourne Legacy and The Expendables 2 this week to remind us what really matters in life: archery, steeplechase and shooting. Wait. Maybe the Olympics hasn't finished after all...

The Last Stand Trailer Shoots Online
Some movies hit us with their poster and trailer all at once and damn the risk of our heads exploding with excitement. Not Arnold Schwarzenegger's new film, The Last Stand. The Austrian Oak's latest blast of action released its poster and is now following up with its first trailer, which is now online.

    Chris has a plan.

How To Ensure Avengers 2 Is Awesome
It's the third-highest grossing film of all time (and no, Dark Knight Rises is not going to overtake it) and one of the best-loved films of the year. The Avengers (whether they Assemble or not) blew us all away, and we were thrilled when we heard that Joss Whedon would return to write and direct Avengers 2. But what should he be thinking about as he starts work? Cheekily, entirely-unasked and utterly superfluously to requirements, we thought we'd come up with some advice for their second outing...

    The Empire Podcast #24
The director of the Total Recall remake, Len Wiseman, and the star of Peep Show (and now The Wedding Video), Robert Webb, are an unlikely pairing, but here they are, the guests on the latest edition of the Empire Podcast. Elsewhere, the team discuss which books they'd like to see turned into movies, The Expendables 2 and just how to pronounce Zach Galifianakis' name.

    Movie Cities' Olympic Concept Posters
London 2012 may have been a triumph for both Team GB and the capital itself, but as it winds down we're already looking ahead. No, not to Rio in 2016 - but beyond! Which city will host the 2020 Olympics? Such a futuristic date requires an appropriately out-there host city, and we have some fabulous examples drawn from the movies. Here, Empire's finest concept artists put together their visions of what a few movie city Olympic bids might look like...

    The Expendables 2 Viewers' Guide
Alongside newcomer Jean-Claude Van Damme, Bruce Willis and Arnold Schwarzenegger are back with a vengeance in The Expendables, increasing the '80s/'90s action heroes involved in Sly Stallone's sequel to approximately... loads. To celebrate all these muscle-bound masters of their art, Empire has trawled their back catalogue for this very special viewers' guide. Be warned, however: excessive viewing of these films may cause testosterone poisoning, pregnancy or a nigh-on unendurable sense of one's own lack of muscle mass.

Chuck Norris: In His Own Words
Back in May 2007, Empire's Nick de Semlyen travelled to Texas to interview the man, the legend, that is Chuck Norris. As he once again invades cinemas in The Expendables 2, as a character known simply as Booker, we have the full interview for your enjoyment. Warning: contains roundhouse kicks to the head.

Jean-Claude Van Damme Talks The Expendables 2
In The Expendables 2, Jean-Claude Van Damme plays the bad guy, Jean Vilain, but in our video interview, he plays a breakdancing, snake-punching, Conan-loving bundle of energy who even offers tips on how to surprise your teacher with a pin. For all this and more, click play on the video below - but be warned: he's ever-so-slightly bonkers. In the best possible way, of course.

The Ultimate Pixar Minor Characters Picture Quiz
You can complete this quiz in two ways. If you want, you can just work out which of these characters appear in which Pixar films, or you can remember the name of each individual character - both the name of the film and the character's name will get you a tick in the box below the picture. It's controversial, it's exciting, it's Empire's Ultimate Pixar Minor Characters Picture Quiz. Enjoy!

Will Money Bring You Happiness? A Movie Flowchart
In Jackpot, three former criminals and a social worker win 1.7 million Norwegian krona in the football pools - and with this being an adaption of a Jo Nesbo novel, things very messy, very quickly. It begs the question: does money (in the movies, at least) ever buy you happiness? After some extensive research through our DVD collections, Empire offers up a flowchart that gives some (if not all) the answers...

    The Genius Of Carlo Rambaldi
"Carlo Rambaldi was E.T.'s Geppetto," recalled Steven Spielberg about the Academy Award-winning special-effects artist who passed away on Friday. Rambaldi's craft mixed mechanical, electronic and systems design engineering but his art knew limitless imagination, winning Oscars for King Kong, Alien and his most famous creation E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial. In an age of colourless, characterless CGI creations, Rambaldi's work runs the gamut from sheer terror to benign wonder but always with personality. Here are some of his highlights over his 30-film career.

21 Stunning Examples Of Pixar Concept Art
Pixar's movies may be beautiful, but then again, so is their concept art. In honour of Brave's arrival in cinemas, here are 21 of our favourite examples of the Emeryville studio's sketches, from Toy Story to - you guessed it - Brave itself.

    Special Promotion Four Stories
Four Stories is a global screenwriting competition with Intel Ultrabook Experience and W Hotels which will be judged by Roman Coppola and a host of industry experts including actress Chloe Sevigny.

Running until Aug 30th three winners will get the opportunity to see their short script produced by Roman's filmmaking company, The Directors Bureau, at one of four W Hotels destinations worldwide (Maldives, Doha, Mexico City, or Washington D.C.). The films will premiere at red carpet events in select W Hotels worldwide and be distributed online. Go to http://intel.co.uk/fourstories to submit script.

Scripts must be no longer then 10 minutes and must include the Ultrabook and be set in a W hotel.

A copy of Wilfred, some doughnuts and, er, a man dressed as a dog lapping beer. We're sure it will all become clear when we watch the show.

In 1977 Trebor produced a Fu Munchews sweet.

There's a word, "overmorrow", that means "the day after tomorrow".

Arnold Schwarzenegger's first major role as an actor, in Conan, came when he was 35. There's hope for us all.

We think Marlon Brando used to have a pet racoon called Russell. He had a tiny leather jacket.

Christopher Walken used to shave elephants in a circus, using fire. Well of course he did!

Baby Got Back - according to the movies. Hooray for science! Water bears in space. David Lynch's dirty dancing.

If you have any timewasters to share, then e-mail them in to us.

    Brave

No less lovely than former films, in many ways lovelier, but Brave is boutique Pixar: less ambitious, more succinct, excellence at a lower ebb.

    Also Out
    Take This Waltz High infidelity.
    The Wedding Video Bridal tap.
The Expendables 2 The Brawn Legacy.
The Bourne Legacy We want Matt not gloss.
The Bird May give you wings.

This week's video trailers and clips. Every week, our video player will update to show trailers and clips from the week's movie releases listed above.

    Headhunters

A slick thriller which takes place in a moral vacuum. It's fascinating rather than exciting, but makes for chilly thrills with two strong, charismatic lead performances, a great deal of style and amusingly repulsive, ruthless twists.

    Also Out
The Kid with a Bike Film with a heart.
Orlando Sumptuously shot stroll through the centuries.
Casino Royale Long on laughs, short on testicle whipping.

The Expendables meet, erm, Explumbable. Shit is about to get real.
