 | This Week... The weather this week has been like George Clooney, or Cary Grant in North By Northwest: hot and grey*. It's too muggy to spend time outside, and not quite sunny enough to feel the benefit. So why not stay safely indoors and enjoy a wealth of informative features on the site instead? You can heighten your brow by examining the paintings that inspired the movies, get your geek on by learning about the hidden easter eggs in Man Of Steel, receive an introduction to the characters of Monsters University courtesy of its director and enjoy this week's pod-guests, Jason Statham and Max Brooks , talking you through Hummingbird and World War Z. Frankly it seems like the wisest course, especially since the outside world is already full of undoubtedly dangerous insects and, with World War Z finally now in cinemas, will probably be overrun by zombies any second now. *Thanks to Lauren Laverne for that joke. | | | | | 15 Man Of Steel Easter Eggs You May Have Missed Man Of Steel director Zack Snyder and co-writer / producer David S. Goyer are self-confessed comic book nerds, the kind of guys who casually reference classic Superman covers and are more than happy to sneak geeky references into a multi-million dollar superhero movie. After speaking to the two of them for our spoiler podcast and video interviews, we've collated some of the stand-out bits of geekery from Kal-El's cinematic return. Any we've missed? | |
| | | The Empire Podcast #66 The one and only acting man mountain that is Jason Statham drops by the Empire Podcast studio this week, as does the man who has scared millions to tears after writing the World War Z - the book, not the film - Max Brooks. As if hearing from those two fascinating fellows wasn't enough, there's also our tribute to the late great James Gandolfini, as well as a discussion of the upcoming Fifty Shades Of Grey adaptation and which tagline is the very best ever written. |
| | | Empire's Man Of Steel Spoiler Podcast Special Fancy nearly an hour of spoiler-filled Empire Podcast chat about the latest Superman movie, Man Of Steel, followed by half an hour's worth of immensely interesting details from the film's director Zack Snyder and writer / producer David S. | | | Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues - Trailer Breakdown! Unless you've spent the last couple of days living as a smelly pirate hooker on Whore Island, you'll know that the BIG trailer of the week was the long-awaited teaser proper for Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues, which gave us our first glimpse at actual footage from the long-awaited return of Ron Burgundy and the Channel 4 news team. Normally, we'd attempt a trailer breakdown on our lonesome, but for something this monumental we needed reinforcements. So we got out our conch and bellowed for assistance from Adam McKay, the maverick genius who directed and co-wrote (with Will Ferrell) the movie. He was more than happy to give us some fresh and startling insights into the world of Ron, Brick, Brian and Champ. Warning: after you've read this, you may have to make a visit to the pants store. |
| | | The Paintings That Inspired The Movies There are movies galore that tell the lives of artists, and films beyond number that feature art work in some way, from Ferris Bueller's Day Off to Bande Á Part to Skyfall. But some films have a relationship with art that is a little closer and more personal. Often, filmmakers include artworks in their production design plans as an inspiration or mood board; sometimes they build the whole look of their film around a piece of art (although we're not covering artists that actually worked on films here - sorry, Dali). Here are a few that stick particularly close to their source... |
| | | The Beginner's Guide To Monsters University's Newcomers As a prequel to Monsters Inc., Monsters University (out July 12) has a mix of characters you already know - Randall, Sully and Mike to name but three - and a whole heap of ones you don't. Speaking to director Dan Scanlon and producer Kori Rae about the new gang of scarers, we heard some fascinating insight into the Gruesome Twosome's new old buddies at their fraternity, Oozma Kappa, as well as titbits on the teaching staff and something called 'The Greek Council'... |
| | | Will Yun Lee On The Wolverine Will Yun Lee has played a Marvel character before - he was big bad Kirigi in Elektra - but that's not to be confused with his character in The Wolverine. We know he's officially billed as Kenuichio Harada, but beyond that Lee can't say much for fear of spoilers. Still, we did get a few snippets from him on his experience of filming, including Hugh Jackman's thing with lottery tickets... |
| | | Rila Fukushima On The Wolverine Rila Fukushima was best known as a model and had only appeared in one short film before she was cast in The Wolverine as Yukio. But we can expect to see much more of her in future; she has the acting bug now, and has training as an assassin so casting directors had better watch out. We chatted to her about working with Hugh Jackman's metal-boned mutant and how she approached the part... |
| | | Tao Okamoto Talks The Wolverine As one of Japan's top models, Tao Okamoto has already made a name for herself in the fashion world, but she's in a whole new world as Mariko Yashida in The Wolverine. One of the great loves of Logan's life, Mariko is a key part of his Japanese adventures, and she explained a little about her approach to the character and how the film's Mariko differs from her comic-book origins... |
| | | David S. Goyer And Zack Snyder On Man Of Steel's Secrets Following in the footsteps of our Iron Man 3 spoiler podcast breakdown with Shane Black and Drew Pearce - as well as our Skyfall writers special and the Star Trek Into Darkness dissection - here are the secrets of Man Of Steel, as revealed by director Zack Snyder and writer/producer David S. Goyer on our recent spoiler podcast. Fascinating, illuminating and chock-full of spoilers, you're not going to want to read this feature until you've seen the movie, which, handily, is in cinemas right about now. |
| | | Zoe Bell On Stunts, Prosthetics & Fantasy Action Zoe Bell built her career as a stuntwoman on things like Xena: Warrior Princess before shifting into acting with Death Proof. She's recently cropped up briefly in small roles in Django Unchained and Oblivion, as well as taking on stunt duties in Hansel And Gretel: Witch Hunters as a "Tall Witch" who comes to a sticky end. We talked to her about the biggest stunts she's attempted, the shift into acting and whether she's up for the female Expendables... | | | |
