This Week...

Yesterday was Thanksgiving in the US, which means that Hollywood will be off today lying around in a turkey-coma and snacking on leftover pumpkin pie instead of getting on with the important business of making entertainment for us all. That said, if we've learned anything from the movies - and we think we have - there's a fair chance that some of them are still stuck in a plane, train or automobile somewhere with Steve Martin. If that's the case, please tell him we're big fans and ask him to give Chevy Chase a call and start work on Three Amigos 2. Elsewhere this week, we have some very glamorous interviews with Bradley Cooper, Colin Firth, Cameron Diaz and Michael Peña, and a jam-packed podcast that includes a chat with the director of Brave. Enjoy!

Adapted from a novel by Daniel Clay, Broken promises to mirror the raw suburban melodrama of its source. Brisbane International Film Festival
The 21st Brisbane International Film Festival is well and truly underway, and after the damp-squib opening night film (The Sweeney? WTF?! Evidently Skyfall was too much to ask), everything is up, up, up, headlong into a strong, eclectic program, blending festival titans (Haneke's Amour, Kim ki-duk's Pieta among others), with buzzing curios and must-see rarities.

    The Empire Podcast #38
End Of Watch and Silver Linings Playbook are two movies well worth watching this weekend. Want more details than just that? Listen to this very podcast, and details are what you shall have - as well as more Star Wars Episode VII titbits, a discussion of journalism on film and an obligatory mention of Nick's very good friend, The Rock.

Bradley Cooper Talks Silver Linings Playbook
Never let it be said that Bradley Cooper doesn't do his homework. Not only did he prep for working with Jennifer Lawrence on Silver Linings Playbook by watching X-Men: First Class, he also sat down to The Hunger Games. The BC verdict? "Oh my god! That's a brutal movie." Putting talk of tracker jackers aside, Empire chatted to the star of David O. Russell's new movie about his increasingly polished Robert De Niro impression, being told off for said impressions, and borrowing Mandy Moore's dance moves for Silver Lining's classic dance-off.

Colin Firth And Cameron Diaz Talk Gambit
In remaking a '60 caper flick, Gambit director Michael Hoffman (The Last Station) exposed the world to perhaps its greatest threat: Colin Firth's legs. Well, that's what the man himself thinks. To us, they seemed like a perfectly decent set of man-pins. Empire headed to Claridges Hotel, the scene of the trouser-crime, to chat to Hoffman, Firth and his co-star, Cameron Diaz, about the movie.

Michael Peña Talks End Of Watch
Cast again and again in supporting roles, Michael Peña finally gets his hands on a big lead role in David "Training Day" Ayers not-quite-a-found-footage police drama, playing partner to Jake Gyllenhaal's tough LA street cop. In our interview with the World Trade Center / Observe And Report / Tower Heist veteran, we talk making movies in a couple of weeks and the fine art of acting whilst driving a car and busting bad guys...

Star Wars Episode VII Directors: Rumour Control
[Director Name] Interested In Star Wars! [Director Name] NOT Interested In Star Wars! It's been a week and a half and already we've seen approximately seventy bajillion such stories. So rather than cynically run every breath of Star Wars news between now and May, 2015, we're going to gather all the whispers of director interest / disinterest and just plonk them here instead because honestly, when a busy person points out that they're busy that should not qualify as news. Here you can see all the runners and riders at a glance, without endless speculation about who is looking likely or not. You're welcome, world.

The word "playbook" could hardly be smaller on UK ads for Silver Linings Playbook.

Tom Hiddleston raps Miami. Is there anything he can't do? When Deadpool meets Pooh Bear the result is... James Bond-style cufflinks, anyone? Looking for a volcano for your evil lair? Try these.

It's Chris-mas time! This is like Christmas-time only a month early and at work, as our Chris discovered when his desk got Arthur Christmas'ed.

    End Of Watch

It's a collection of cop-movie clichés but presented with sufficient flair and strong performances that the ride is enough, even if it's on rails.

    Also Out
Nativity 2: Danger In The Manger Not necessarily the happiest time of the year.
    Starbuck All my children.
The House I Live In Eugene Jarecki's devastating doc.
Silver Linings Playbook Crazy brutal love.
    Gambit Heist and dry.
