 | This Week... This week sees the release of Argo, Ben Affleck's super-tense thriller about a ridiculous CIA mission with a deadly serious objective. It's also a case where Hollywood was itself the good guy: a fake blockbuster was created, with the connivance of film industry insiders, to cover up the mission. Let's hope that, in decades to come when more CIA files are declassified, it will emerge that films like Jack & Jill and What To Expect When You're Expecting will turn out to have an equally noble purpose. On Empire this week, we've interviewed the Argo team, profiled the modern wedding comedy and taken a long, hard look at the very best - or worst - movie taglines. | | | The Empire Podcast #36 Mark Millar, the man behind Kick-Ass, Wanted and a hell of a lot more, makes his first appearance on the Empire Podcast this week, talking everything from Kick-Ass 2 and his new role as head honcho of Fox's Marvel properties. Then there are Skyfall writers Neal Purvis and Robert Wade, who join us for a ten-minute, non-spoilery chat about how the 23rd official Bond outing came to pass. |
| | | Skyfall Writers Spoiler Podcast Special Neal Purvis and Robert Wade have been EON's in-house scriptwriters for the past five Bond movies, from 1999's The World Is Not Enough (with Bruce Feirstein) to 2012's Skyfall (with John Logan). With their tenure as Bond's pensmiths now at an end - Logan is set to write the next two Craig films alone - they dropped by the Empire podcast studio to reveal some amazing spoilery secrets about getting 007 on screen in honour of Bond 23's arrival in cinemas over in the US. |

| | | The Modern Wedding Comedy Guide This summer has seen a bunch of wedding comedies, with A Few Best Men, The Wedding Video and The Knot attempting to replicate the success of Bridesmaids in a slightly more male-focused way. Of course, these are just the tip of the nuptial iceberg. The last decade or two have seen a veritable flood of wedding comedies ranging from razor sharp to sickly sweet. Here's your handy guide to telling which is which... |
| | | The Sapphires Take Empire's Soul Quiz In The Sapphires, a quartet of silver-larynxed songstresses from down under head to Vietnam in the late '60s to entertain the troops. It's Apocalypse Now meets The Commitments with Chris O'Dowd as Colonel Kilgore role and a lot more uplift and a lot less horror. With toes tapping, we sent our own bearded soul man Ali Plumb down to subject the cast and director Wayne Blair to Empire's own version of The Old Grey Whistle Test. Put on your shades, grab a full tank of gas (optional) and enjoy. |
| | | Ben Affleck And His Cast Talk Argo Argo is the unbelievable true story of a CIA mission to rescue six fugitives in post-revolutionary Iran by means of a fictional sci-fi movie. It's currently garnering a lot of Oscar buzz for its insanely tense but also very funny look at this desperate, declassified effort, so we talked to director and star Ben Affleck, and his cast-members John Goodman, Alan Arkin and Bryan Cranston to get the full story... |
| | | Film Franchises Infographic: Who Owns What? With the news that Disney has bought Lucasfilm, it's time to take a glance at the current state of play as regards franchises in Hollywood. Who distributes which film series? It's interesting to see which studios control which characters, if only so that the business-minded among you can mentally keep score at the box office each year. In terms of defining this lot, we've listed franchises that have had recent entries or which have left the door open to future instalments, so we've included Pirates Of The Caribbean, which could possibly return, but left out Harry Potter and The Matrix, which appear thoroughly wrapped up. A few of these are yet to prove their franchise status - Jack Reacher, for instance - but are being designed to fit that bill, and if in doubt we've listed the UK rather than US distributor because Rule Britannia and all that. Here's the state of play... |
| | | Generation X-Wing Following last week's Star Wars announcement, we republish this piece by Ian Freer on Star Wars' seismic effect. He argues that it shares a global currency akin to The Beatles, and explains why the series still holds such a special place in our hearts. Read the full article for his complete analysis. | | | |

 | | | | | Argo An old-school espionage thriller with a movie-biz comedy twist, all the better for being (almost) entirely true. It is to Ben Affleck's credit that the tension and laughs complement rather than neutralise each other. | | | | Also Out | | | This week's video trailers and clips.
