 | This Week... We were settling in for a quiet week, perhaps with a little apple-bobbing on Halloween on Wednesday, but little did we know that the biggest film news in ages would break with the word that a new Star Wars film is on the way and set for 2015. After we picked our jaws up from the floor, we started getting really excited at the prospect. Episode VII, for so long a wild, impossible dream, will be on our screens within a matter of years, and it's got us all a-twitter. We've already had a look at the extended universe storylines that could potentially provide a model for the continuing franchise, and discussed what this means for Star Wars, Disney and Hollywood. Apart fro Star Wars, we also spoke to Sean Bean about his new film and the people behind Rust & Bone for the lowdown on the highly-praised French drama. | | | | If you get possessed by a demon, you send in Max von Sydow. If you get possessed by a chocolate demon, you send in a banana. That's just common sense. | | | | | | Honestly, we have no idea what Chris meant by this. | | |

 | | | | | Night Visions 2012: The Bay Helsinki, it seems, doesn't go much for Hallowe'en. They see it as a kind of affected American import like we do in the UK - in fact they're even less convinced by it, since the shops don't appear to be full of tat like ours. I've yet to see a "sexy Edward Scissorhands" costume. Nevertheless, the long established horror and fantasy festival Night Visions kicks off on an appropriate October 31. There's already been some preamble, with guests John Waters and Paul Verhoeven taking to the stage of the Maxim theatre. | | | |

 | | | | | Star Wars Episode VII: What It Means The sale of Lucasfilm to Disney and the announcement of Star Wars: Episode VII is a huge shift for both companies - and for Hollywood as a whole. We took some time on Wednesday to think about what led to the decision, explain why we're optimistic about a new dawn for Star Wars, and what this means for Disney and Hollywood's other big studios... | |
| | | The Empire Podcast #35 A huge piece of movie news arrived this week in the form of Disney's acquisition of Lucasfilm for $4 billion and the announcement of Star Wars: Episode VII's release in 2015. Naturally, the first chunk of this week's Empire Podcast discusses this in depth, with the rest filled out by your usual dose of reviews, interviews (including Doctor Who's Matt Smith and Grass Roots' and American Pie's Jason Biggs) and other highly entertain cinematic bits and bobs. |
| | | Empire's Special Sir Roger Moore Podcast The one and only Sir Roger Moore stopped by the Empire Podcast studio this week in honour of his latest book, Bond On Bond. The result is this 40-minute special interview podcast, which covers everything from the third Bond's Christmas dinner tips to explaining the plot of Inception. A word of warning, however - though he's as debonair and funny as ever, the 85-year-old Sir Roger does speak rather softly, so do pay attention 007... |
| | | Empire Meets Sean Bean As Boromir, Sharpe and Eddard Stark, Sean Bean has been scourge of orcs, Frenchies and a clutch of pesky Lannisters over the last few years. In Silent Hill: Revelation 3D the boot is on the other foot, as Sheffield's finest, a man who's no stranger to fog-shrouded urban environments, tries to get out of the Konami-inspired terrorstead with life, and errant daughter, in one piece. But will he survive this one? Well, we didn't ask him that - it could be construed a spoiler - but we did find out which Halloween flicks have him ducking for cover. Watch on to find out which movie is too scary even for Major Richard Sharpe... |
| | | Philip Seymour Hoffman: A Viewer's Guide The Hoff, as almost no-one calls him, is adding the role of cult leader in Paul Thomas Anderson's The Master to a list of religious figures that already includes a priest and a reverend. If this progression continues it's only a matter of time before someone casts him as God, such is his reliable excellence in almost every role he takes. He's even good in Patch Adams, for chrissakes. Back when he was just 'Philip Hoffman', with a mop top and a gleeful sense of preppy entitlement in Scent Of A Woman, he was giving a glimpse of what he could do - here's what he's done. |
| | | The Future Of Star Wars: Possible Plots For Episode VII In the most surprising and exciting piece of news in years, the Walt Disney company has bought Lucasfilm and is planning at least three new Star Wars films. While there is already a treatment in existence for the first one, and the company is still locking in the creative team and focus for a 2015 release, we thought we'd offer some fun suggestions based on the expanded universe... |
| | | Alternative Horror Movie Posters Since it's nearly Halloween, our thoughts have naturally turned to all things scary in the Empire office. In the process, we've been discussing some of the greatest horror weapons of all time, and our Amar was inspired to gather the best and acknowledge each one with an alternative poster, all on a theme. The predictable ones are in there - Texas Chain Saw Massacre, anyone? - but there are a few surprises as you click through the gallery. Check them out and add your own suggestions of what we missed below... |
| | | The 30 Greatest Star Wars Characters On the eve of Star Wars' 30th Anniversary, that the Empire office decided to set out its space-stall and announced the 30 greatest characters. And here's the full top 30, counting down from l'il fuzzball Wicket to a certain blaster-favouring Kessell-running smuggler, complete with the Empire writers' case for each... |
| | | Cheat-Sheet: Meet The Mandarin With the release of the first Iron Man 3 trailer, you might be wondering just who this Mandarin chap is. In the film, he's played by Sir Ben Kingsley, Oscar winner and serious actor, so you'd be right to guess that there's some serious weight to this particular villain. So as we all digest the trailer and get excited about the film, here's a handy guide to the Mandarin's comic book history. Of course, as with other Marvel universe movies, elements will undoubtedly be changed for the film, but read on to see if there are any clues to Tony Stark's future hidden in the Mandarin's past... |
| | | Bond Villains And Their Monologues When you've spent months - heck, years - hollowing out volcanoes, developing space programmes, flicking through goon CVs and signing off monorail plans, the payoff has to be spectacular. And this is the conundrum Bond villains struggle with time and again. Where's the joy in pulling the trigger on world domination unless they can make 007 squirm as they talk him through the plan? Here are some of the most egregious examples. |
| | | Marion Cotillard Talks Rust And Bone You could argue until the whales come home about who plays lead in Jacques Audiard's powerful new drama. Marion Cotillard's class elevates her role from potential victimhood to something transcendent while a face that will be new to many moviegoers, Belgian Matthias Schoenaerts, delivers a performance that's full of sex, sweat and sinew. Either way, Rust And Bone is much more than Free Willy with a Tricolour. Empire spoke to its two main stars, as well as director Jacques Audiard and his screenwriting partner Thomas Bidegain, about the acclaimed drama. | | | |

 | | | | | Some Sightseers goodies for Ben Wheatley's new film. We're a little worried what he might send next, though. | | | |
